This book was released on 2016-05-16 with total page 826 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After 500 years, the Torah commentary of Don Isaac Abarbanel (Peirush Abarbanel) is now available in English. This volume covers the initial Creation of the Universe from nothingness, and constitutes one quarter of Abarbanel's commentary on the book of Genesis. Abarbanel, also pronounced Abravanel or Abrabanel, is known as a "seeker of truth." He is not beyond questioning the "established" Judaic thinkers, or anyone else, if he thinks they are wrong. He is not afraid to cite non-Jewish thinkers when he believes they are right. His words are sometimes controversial, but never uninteresting. He is extensively quoted by academics, biblical scholars, and other philosophers. Until now, he was not accessible to the lay English-speaker. His style, maintained here, was to cite a verse or set of verses, then ask probing questions, which he answers in detail. The questions and answers are cross-referenced by footnote here. He also extensively quoted a word or two from biblical sources, assuming the reader would know the full verse and context. Those are now cited by footnote here as well. This is a word-by-word translation, not a supercommentary. These are the words of Abarbanel, merely rendered into English.

Book excerpt: For the first time in 500 years, the commentary of Don Yitzchak Abarbanel on the Torah and Prophets has been translated from its original Hebrew into another language. This is not a supercommentary, the opinion of some modern writer as to what Abarbanel said, this is Abarbanel, in his own words, merely rendered into readable English. His references to other writings are now clearly cited. His famous question and answer style is preserved, each question cross-referenced with its answer.

Book Synopsis Maimonides and the Shaping of the Jewish Canon by : James A. Diamond
Download or read book Maimonides and the Shaping of the Jewish Canon written by James A. Diamond and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2014-10-27 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jewish thought since the Middle Ages can be regarded as a sustained dialogue with Moses Maimonides, regardless of the different social, cultural, and intellectual environments in which it was conducted. Much of Jewish intellectual history can be viewed as a series of engagements with him, fueled by the kind of 'Jewish' rabbinic and esoteric writing Maimonides practiced. This book examines a wide range of theologians, philosophers, and exegetes who share a passionate engagement with Maimonides, assaulting, adopting, subverting, or adapting his philosophical and jurisprudential thought. This ongoing enterprise is critical to any appreciation of the broader scope of Jewish law, philosophy, biblical interpretation, and Kabbalah. Maimonides's legal, philosophical, and exegetical corpus became canonical in the sense that many subsequent Jewish thinkers were compelled to struggle with it in order to advance their own thought. As such, Maimonides joins fundamental Jewish canon alongside the Bible, the Talmud, and the Zohar.
