Her mother plays the piano, her father plays the violin, and one brother plays the cello while the other plays the clarinet. As soon as Ava selects an instrument, she will be able to join them as they practice for the annual holiday concert. And her family has definite ideas on what instrument Ava should select, from the piano to the flute to the violin. But Ava isn't interested in any of them. Ava wants to play the tuba. And she gets her wish. But playing the tuba isn't as easy as it seems. And there is no place for a tuba in the annual concert. But with the encouragement of her music teacher, Ava finds a place for her and her tuba in a special holiday celebration.

Book excerpt: Short stories by Olympia Vernon, Robert Olen Butler, Mary Ward Brown, and more that look at Christmas from unexpected angles. While Christmas stories are traditionally sweet, not every holiday memory generates a feeling of ease, merriment, and plenty. In the capable hands of twelve of the best writers in the South, Christmas is a season not only of traditions and family, but of sacrifice and endurance, loneliness and faith. The stories in this anthology embrace the rich and varied aspects of the Christmas season, upholding family, forgiveness, and love as virtues of redemption. A divorcee finds strength in an artifact from her childhood in “Queen Elizabeth Running Free,” while an elderly couple struggles to find comfort in “The Cold Giraffe.” From Elizabeth Spencer’s “Carrollton Christmas in Olden Days,” recalling warm family memories of a particularly cold holiday, to Mark Richard’s “The Birds for Christmas,” wherein a bleak and difficult Christmas is endured by two boys in an orphanage, the stories in this anthology exemplify the best that Southern fiction has to offer.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 2020 Association for Recorded Sound Collections Awards for Excellence—Best History in the category of Best Historical Research in Recorded Jazz Adrian Rollini (1903–1956), an American jazz multi-instrumentalist, played the bass saxophone, piano, vibraphone, and an array of other instruments. He even introduced some, such as the harmonica-like cuesnophone, called Goofus, never before wielded in jazz. Adrian Rollini: The Life and Music of a Jazz Rambler draws on oral history, countless vintage articles, and family archives to trace Rollini’s life, from his family’s arrival in the US to his development and career as a musician and to his retirement and death. A child prodigy, Rollini was playing the piano in public at the age of five. At sixteen in New York he was recording pianola rolls when his peers recognized his talent and asked him to play xylophone and piano in a new band, the California Ramblers. When he decided to play a relatively new instrument, the bass saxophone, the Ramblers made their mark on jazz forever. Rollini became the man who gave this instrument its place. Yet he did not limit himself to playing bass parts—he became the California Ramblers’ major soloist and created the studio and public sound of the band. In 1927 Rollini led a new band that included such jazz greats as Bix Beiderbecke and Frank Trumbauer. During the Depression years, he was back in New York playing with several bands including his own New California Ramblers. In the 1940s, Rollini purchased a property on Key Largo. He rarely performed again for the public but hosted rollicking jam sessions at his fishing lodge with some of the best nationally known and local players. After a car wreck and an unfortunate hospitalization, Rollini passed away at age fifty-three.

Book excerpt: From Back Cover: This is a newspaperman's history of the Upper Peninsula. Intrigued by the place name Michigamme, Martin and his wife stopped there on their wedding trip in 1940 and became enchanted with the Upper Peninsula. Out of that attraction came more visits, a string of interviews and a series of tales told by miners, loggers, hunters and trappers. Originally published in 1944, it is a collection of nineteen lively stories told in convenient chunks for quick reading.-Detroit Free Press. The passage of time provides a better test of the quality of a book than litmus paper does of the acidity of a solution. This book was originally written in 1944 by one of our most powerful documentary authors. [Call it North Country] reads like a novel. If you're a history buff, it reads better than a novel. This book could not be written today. The witnesses to the development of upper Michigan would be missing and twice or thrice told tales would lose much detail and would not have the ring of truth which authenticates history.-Inland Seas.

I also know you can make a difference in the life of a foster child. Ive been there. While my story is not unique, I want to share it in order to help the caring people of America walk in the shoes of a child who experiences physical, mental, and emotional abuse; is removed from everything she knows; is provided a roof over her head by the State and strangers; and then is thrust into adulthood totally unprepared but later succeeds. I want them to see, touch, and feel what the abused/foster child suffers and why they are who they are. I want them to see the major gaps in the childs life skills and social abilities and why they exist. We must walk in the childs shoes in order to understand them. Only then will we be able to truly fill the enormous amount of needs they have and feel confident in adopting, fostering, and working with foster children. We must fully understand the heart and life of a foster child before we can effectively foster, adopt, or work with this vulnerable population of extraordinary children. I invite you to walk with me, and learn how it truly feels to grow up as nobodys child. A little girl destined to failure, confined by abuse, and traumatized by foster care is inspired by faith to succeed.
