Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Treatise on the Surgical Diseases of the Eye No one who is at all acquainted with Ophthalmic Surgery is ignorant of the immense value of the profoundly scientific and eminently practical researches of Dr. Jacob, of Dublin: his writings I have studied with care. To Mr. Wilde, of Dublin, I must also pay my tribute of thanks and admiration and no less to my friend Mr. Browne, of Belfast, who has greatly assisted me by many important suggestions. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Treatise on the Diseases of the Eye: Including the Doctrines and Practice of the Most Eminent Modern Surgeons, and Particularly Those of Professor Beer The volume Which is here offered to the public is little more than the abstract of a Course of Lectures, Which the author had prepared upon the Diseases of the Eye. Several years atten dance at the various hospitals of Great Britain, and the Continent especially, afforded him ample means and facility of observation on the various diseases of this organ; and this opportunity has been considerably augmented, since his return to his native country, by his appointment to the Baltimore Dispensary for the cure of diseases of the Eye. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Practical Treatise on Diseases of the Eye My aim in the composition of the following pages has been to place before the profession, in a concise and readable form, a general view of the present state of knowledge with regard to the nature and treatment of the more important diseases of the eye. I have not thought it necessary to dwell minutely upon maladies of rare occurrence, or upon details which are interesting only to specialists; neither have I attempted to achieve that kind of completeness which is produced by undigested compilation. The book embodies the substance of my lectures at St. George's Hospital, and contains but slight reference to modes of practice of which I am unable to speak from experience. With perhaps three or four exceptions, the illustrations are original. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Treatise on the Surgical Diseases of the Eye As an untried writer, I cannot be otherwise than anxious for the success of this work. I have spared no pains in my attempt to make it of practical value, and I have laid under contribution all the literature that has come within my reach or my knowledge, whether English or Foreign, on the subject of Ophthalmic Pathology and Surgery. I have given at length my own personal experience. It remains for me to particularize some of those to whom I feel myself especially indebted. First of all I mention the venerable Dr. John Richard Farre, who, in conjunction with Mr. John Cunningham Saunders, established the first public Institution in this Kingdom for the treatment of Ophthalmic Diseases. To this great Physician, full of years and of honour, I am indebted for the advice to study Ophthalmic Medicine and Surgery, and by him I was introduced as a pupil into this department of Science. Having had the good fortune to be both pupil and, for a short period, Acting House-Surgeon of the Ophthalmic Institution, under the superintendence of Mr. Tyrrell, Mr. Scott, and Mr. Dalrymple, I must record my admiration of the zeal, the practical skill, and the advanced science which characterised the practice of those illustrious men, whose premature death is a loss as well to the Public as to the Medical Profession. To Mr. Lawrence also, eminent alike as a scholar and as a surgeon, I am under deep obligations for the knowledge which I gained on Ophthalmic subjects, while acting under him as Dresser and House-Surgeon. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual of Ophthalmoscopic Surgery: Being a Practical Treatise on the Use of the Ophthalmoscope in Diseases of the Eye The confident opinion I entertained, when the first edition of this work appeared, in 1857, of the value and importance of the Ophthalmoscope as an unerring guide in the previously obscure pathology of the eye, and the great popularity which I also anticipated it would achieve, have been fully realized by the results of the past five years' experience. That its introduction would form a new era in scientific investigation, I felt assured, from the advance of special knowledge when aided by proper methods. Of investigation, and the wide field. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Diseases and Injuries of the Eye: With Their Medical and Surgical Treatment Those who remember the last edition of this work, which was published in 1885, will scarcely recognise it in its new dress. The great success that attended former editions decided me to make an attempt to place it once more on a sound basis. Much care and labour has been taken to make the work as practical as possible. It was chiefly owing to the attention paid to the clinical features, and to the treatment of the various eye diseases, that the book obtained its former popularity; and to these portions, and especially to treatment, a much larger space has been allotted than is usually the case. At the same time, much more attention has been paid to the anatomical, pathological, and theoretical aspects, and, as a consequence, and owing partly to the great strides made of late years in ophthalmic surgery, the book has greatly increased in size. My endeavour has been, briefly, to present a work which will serve not only for the student of Ophthalmology, but will also prove useful as a book of reference for the general practitioner, who is more concerned with the practical relief of disease than with the theory of it. I can only hope that, in some measure at least, this attempt has been successful, and if so, the labour which has occupied the greater part of the leisure time of three years will be amply rewarded. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Diseases of the Eye: Their Medical and Surgical Treatment In the preparation of this work it has been the design of the Author to state as concisely and briefly as possible the present views of ophthalmic science. The endeavor has been to make the work practical and at the same time as thorough as the importance of the subject demands. The causes, symptoms, differential diagnosis, and treatment of those diseases which are more commonly met with in general practice have been fully considered. The methods of treatment described are those which have borne the test of hospital and private practice, and in the experience of the writer have been found of value. Numerous illustrations have been introduced to better elucidate the conditions and operations described, and such as are not original have been selected from the standard works on ophthalmology, as well illustrating the points presented. Colored lithographs from the admirable atlas of Sichel and others have been added in the endeavor to more fully depict the diseases described and thus enable the student or practitioner to readily diagnose the various affections when presented. The brevity of the book has prevented reference in the body of the work to the authorities consulted in its preparation, and a list has been appended. A sheet of test types after the models of Snellen is furnished for the purpose of testing and recording the condition of the vision of patients. I desire to express my thanks to Dr. C. F. Bassett for assistance rendered in the preparation of the Index and the reading of proof. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 796 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Treatise on the Diseases of the Eye, Including the Anatomy of the Organ The time has certainly come when a complete and acceptable treatise on the diseases of the eye, including its minute anatomy, will be cordially received by the American medical profession. We hope that the translation of Professor Stellwag's book, herewith presented, may prove to be such a work. Doubtless a compilation adapted more especially to the professional habit of thought in England and the United States, would have some advantages over a work originally prepared for medical men speaking another tongue. But we have believed that the present work presented sufficient advantages to outweigh any such objections to it. Moreover, without disregarding the great assistance rendered by English and French surgeons, we must consider the present advanced position of ophthalmology as due, in a great measure, to the labors of the Germans. Under these circumstances, it seems just to recognize this fact by presenting a text-book which is regarded as one of the best in the German language. We had nearly finished a translation of the second edition, when the author informed us that a third was in preparation. The changes and additions were so many, that we found it necessary to begin our work anew, and we accordingly translated this third edition from advance sheets sent by the author. Thus our labors as translators were greatly increased, but on the other hand we found very little to do as editors. Our work has been conscientiously performed, and yet, undoubtedly, many imperfections will be found, for which we ask the indulgence of the profession. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Treatise on Diseases of the Eye: For the Use of General Practitioners My readers are requested to bear in mind that this work is written, not for specialists, but for hom opathic physicians in general practice - for those too busied with the whole, to devote a great amount of time to any one part of medicine and surgery. The endeavor has been, to treat the subjects embraced, clearly and concisely, in the hope of presenting a volume attractive enough, and small enough, to induce the busiest to give it some attention. That there is need of works of this kind in our school is, I presume, unquestioned; and some of the reasons why this need has been permitted to exist so long, are given very frankly in the large treatise of Baehr, translated by Hempel.
