Book excerpt: Over the past several decades there has been significant progress in electronic structure theory, statistical sampling algorithms and computational resources which can be leveraged to calculate fundamental properties of materials and estimate rates of relevant chemical reactions. In the following dissertation, I use computational methods to address the materials problem of a sustainable energy future. Energy storage technologies have played a vital role in the mobile-technology revolution and the transition to utilize more sustainable energy sources; however improvements to the energy density, charge/discharge rate, and safety of rechargeable batteries are needed to realize the ambitious goals of fully electric vehicles and on-grid storage in areas with intermittent, renewable power sources. Li-ion batteries, in general, have a potential to fulfill these demands. In the following work, a new, high energy density electrode material with little capacity loss is considered. Additionally, the complex interaction between an electrode/electrolyte model system is considered in a potential dependent computational framework. Having a sustainable energy future also means utilizing energy-efficient processing in industrial scale applications. Separation processes use roughly 12% of all energy consumed in the United States due to energy-intensive thermal separation techniques. A final study looks at an alloy catalysts for the separation of ethylene from ethane/ethylene mixtures. A unique selectivity property was discovered that may help design catalysts to replace thermal separation of gases.

Book excerpt: The search for cleaner, cheaper, smaller and more efficient energy technologies has to a large extent been motivated by the development of new materials. The aim of this collection of articles is therefore to focus on what materials-based solutions can offer and show how the rational design and improvement of their physical and chemical properties can lead to energy-production alternatives that have the potential to compete with existing technologies. In terms of alternative means to generate electricity that utilize renewable energy sources, the most dramatic breakthroughs for both mobile (i.e., transportation) and stationary applications are taking place in the fields of solar and fuel cells. And from an energy-storage perspective, exciting developments can be seen emerging from the fields of rechargeable batteries and hydrogen storage.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Solar thermal fuels and fluorescent solar concentrators provide two ways in which the energy from the sun can be harnessed and stored. While much progress has been made in recent years, there is still much more to learn about the way that these applications work and more efficient materials are needed to make this a feasible source of renewable energy. Theoretical chemistry is a powerful tool which can provide insight into the processes involved and the properties of materials, allowing us to predict substances that might improve the efficiency of these devices. In this work, we explore how the delta self-consistent field method performs for the calculation of Stokes shifts for conjugated dyes. We also develop a new reaction path finding method which uses a combination of trigonometric functions and information about the initial and final states in the reaction to generate an approximate path. We show that this path finding method works well for several model systems including a seven atom Lennard-Jones cluster. The ability to calculate excited state properties at a reasonably low cost and to find convergent reaction pathways is extremely beneficial for understanding and improving solar devices.

This book was released on 2015 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our work was inspired by the need to improve the efficiency of new types of solar cells. We mainly focus on metal-semiconductor interfaces. In the CdSe study, we find that not all surface states serve to pin the Fermi energy. In our organic-metal work, we explore the complexity and challenges of modeling these systems. For example, we confirm that aromatic compounds indeed have stronger interactions with metal surfaces, but this may lead to the geometry changing as a result of the interaction. We also find that molecules that are not rigid are strongly affected by their neighboring molecules. Surface roughness will have an effect on molecules that more strongly bind to metal surfaces. This study of interfaces relates to one part of the picture of efficiency, but we also look at trying to go beyond the Shockley-Quiesser limit. We explore the idea of combining a direct and indirect bandgap in a single material but find that, in quasi-equilibrium, this does no better than just the direct gap material. This thesis hopes to extend our understanding of metal-semiconductor interface behavior and lead to improvements in photovoltaic efficiency in the future.
