Book excerpt: New results are presented for inviscid, supersonic and hypersonic blunt-body flow fields obtained with a numerical time-dependent method patterned after that of Moretti and Abbett. In addition, important comments are made with regard to the physical and numerical nature of the method. Specifically, numerical results are presented for two-dimensional and axisymmetric parabolic and cubic blunt bodies as well as blunted wedges and cones; these results are presented for zero degrees angle of attack and for a calorically perfect gas with gamma = 1.4. The numerical results are compared with other existing theoretical and experimental data. Also, the effects of initial conditions and boundary conditions are systematically examined with regard to the convergence of the time-dependent numerical solutions, and the point is made that the initial conditions can not be completely arbitrary. Finally, in order to learn more about the performance of the time-dependent method, a numerical experiment is conducted to examine the unsteady propagation and region of influence of a slight pressure disturbance introduced at a point on the surface of a blunt body.

Book excerpt: The report presents a summary of the important results obtained on a combined analytical and experimental program for investigation of the hypersonic dynamic stability of re-entry vehicles. An unsteady flow field solution is described which predicts the static and dynamic stability characteristics for vehicles which are executing small amplitude oscillations about zero angle of attack. Solutions were obtained for sharp and blunted, axisymmetric and two-dimensional shapes in real gas equilibrium flow. The experimental program was conducted in AEDC tunnel 'C' at Mach 10 and in the Ling-Temco-Vought Hot Shot tunnel at Mach 14 and 20 to obtain dynamic stability characteristics of a 10 degree cone. Data are presented to show the effect of bluntness ratio, reduced frequency, center of gravity location, Reynolds number and Mach number. Comparisons are made with various theoretical results and limited correlations are shown which establish significant trends.

Book excerpt: Wind tunnel tests were conducted at M = 10 and at M = 14 and 20 to obtain experimental data on the hypersonic dynamic stability characteristics of a 10-degree half-angle cone. These data were generated to support dynamic stability studies and to evaluate the effects of many geometric and environmental variables, which influence the oscillatory motion of re-entry vehicles. The state-of-the-art of experimental ground testing in hypersonic dynamic stability is reviewed in detail with respect to simulation and data measuring capabilities. Data correlations were obtained to compare facilities and to evaluate the degree of consistency of results using different techniques in measuring and reducing the data. The confidence level for the data is established by means of these correlations, and conclusive interpretations of the data for application in flight estimates can only be made when the significance of these correlations are fully realized. The data correlations do bring out definite inconsistencies in test results and demonstrate the more obvious shortcomings of ground test simulation in this type of experiment research. Test results indicate that the 10-degree cone configuration is dynamically stable over the entire scope of matrix variables covered in the experimental program. Dynamic instabilities observed in flight remain unconfirmed by these ground test results.

It assumes no prior familiarity with either subject on the part of the reader. If you have never studied hypersonic and/or high-temperature gas dynamics before, and if you have never worked extensively in the area, then this book is for you. On the other hand, if you have worked and/or are working in these areas, and you want a cohesive presentation of the fundamentals, a development of important theory and techniques, a discussion of the salient results with emphasis on the physical aspects, and a presentation of modern thinking in these areas, then this book is also for you. In other words, this book is designed for two roles: 1) as an effective classroom text that can be used with ease by the instructor, and understood with ease by the student; and 2) as a viable, professional working tool for engineers, scientists, and managers who have any contact in their jobs with hypersonic and/or high-temperature flow.

Book excerpt: The stability of oscillatory motions of vehicles flying at hypersonic Mach numbers is of considerable relevance to their initial design. Methods are needed for quick and accurate predictions of stability and control which are applicable over a wide range of body shapes, angles of attack and flow conditions, without the need to resort to computationally time consuming numerical flow field calculation methods. The purpose of this paper is to present experimental data, obtained over a range of angles of attack, concerning the static and dynamic pitching stability of a wide range of both pointed and blunted axisymmetric shapes including cones and blunted cylinder flares. These data have been obtained from free oscillation experiments at M = 6.85 in a short duration free piston driven hypersonic wind tunnel. Inviscid embedded Newtonian theory, which accounts for the reduced dynamic pressure and lower flow velocity in the embedded flow downstream of the strong bow shock, provides surprisingly good agreement with the experimental data over a wide range of conditions. A particular aspect is the ability of the inviscid embedded Newtonian theory to predict the effects of nose bluntness, flare geometry, angle of attack and centre of gravity position on single-degree-of-freedom oscillatory motions. Comparisons with experimental results show the broad flow features and their effect on static and dynamic stability are well described in regimes not containing flow structural change. However, in some cases discrepancies exist between the predictions and experimental observations and these have been attributed to a variety of viscous flow phenomena involving boundary layer transition and flow separation, including complex lee surface vortical flows.
