Download or read book The Rise of American High School Sports and the Search for Control written by Robert Pruter and published by Syracuse University Press. This book was released on 2013-08-29 with total page 442 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nearly half of all American high school students participate in sports teams. With a total of 7.6 million participants as of 2008, this makes the high school sports program in America the largest organized sports program in the world. Pruter’s work traces the history of high school sports from the student-led athletic clubs of the 1800s through to the establishment of educator control of high school sports under a national federation by the 1930s. Pruter’s research serves not only to highlight this rich history but also to provide new perspectives on how high school sports became the arena by which Americans fought for some of the most contentious issues in society, such as race, immigration and Americanization, gender roles, religious conflict, the role of the military in democracy, and the commercial exploitation of our youth.

Book Synopsis More Hurdles to Clear by : United States Commission on Civil Rights
Download or read book More Hurdles to Clear written by United States Commission on Civil Rights and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This publication reviews the history of women and girls in athletics, assesses the current status of female participation in high school and college competitive athletics, and summarizes recent policy interpretations by the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare (dhew) of Title ix of the Education Amendments of 1972. The historical review focuses on American attitudes toward female physicality from the Victorian era to the present. Current obstacles to female participation in sports are identified as sex stereotyping of athletics as unfeminine, the idea that females should not engage in strenuous activity, and discrimination in the allocation of resources for sports. The role of Title ix (which prohibits sex discrimination in Federally-assisted education programs) in ameliorating discrimination in athletics is explained. Changes in female participation in competitive athletics since 1970 are described and related to the implementation of Title ix. Participation figures, by sex, are presented separately for high schools, two year colleges, and four year colleges, and are broken down individually for football, baseball/softball, basketball, tennis, and track. Also described are college budget allocations for men's and women's intercollegiate sports. Appended to the report are statistical tables and discussions and regulations concerning DHEW's jurisdiction under Title ix. (Gc).

Book Synopsis School Counseling and the Student Athlete by : Adam Zagelbaum
Download or read book School Counseling and the Student Athlete written by Adam Zagelbaum and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-03-26 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: School Counseling and the Student Athlete explores empirical, theoretical, and practice-based issues that demand consideration by school-based counseling and educational professionals working at the pre-collegiate level. In its pages clinicians and students will find insights into both why student athletes experience many of the issues they do as well as the steps that counselors can take to help these individuals and their families. Theories of motivation and theoretical approaches to counseling student athletes are covered in order to provide an orientation to working with this group, and the book also includes a thorough discussion of the most important elements of counseling the student athlete: the academic, career, personal, and social issues they face; consultations with coaches, teachers, and parents; commercialism and the student athlete’s identity; and gender, sexual identity, and culture issues. Each chapter ends with discussion questions and available resources for counselors. Grounded in research and pioneering in its analysis of sports psychology for students in grades K-12, School Counseling and the Student Athlete is a must-have for school counselors, clinicians, and other professionals who work with elementary and secondary students.
