Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to examine various aspects of sight-singing instruction among Georgia public high school chorus teachers. The following research questions guided the study: 1. What are some practices of Georgia public high school choral teachers regarding the instruction of sight-singing? 2. How do Georgia public high school choral teachers assess effective sight-singing instruction? 3. What factors do Georgia public high school choral teachers perceive as barriers to effective sight-singing instruction? 4. What are some attitudes of Georgia public high school choral teachers regarding the instruction of sight-singing? A survey by Kuehne (2003) was adapted for public high school chorus teachers in the state of Georgia. The survey was first piloted among middle school choral teachers, retired high school choral teachers and college choral teachers in order to verify that it was clear and easy to use. In the principal study, the survey was distributed via email to public high school choral teachers. To increase the response rate, several email invitations were sent followed by phone calls. The data were collected and analyzed for frequencies and percentages of responses. In general, teachers demonstrated a belief in sight-singing as an important part of the choral curriculum and most taught sight-singing to every class. Preferred practices included movable-do do solfége with la-based minor, traditional counting for rhythm, and using the piano for scaffolding rather than doubling. Regarding attitudes, most participants felt confident in their own sight-singing capabilities and identified a lack of sufficient class time and a lack of student motivation as barriers to achieving optimal sight-singing results.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to investigate the attitudes, preferences, and practices of Arizona high school choral directors towards sight-singing skills, and student success in group sight-singing evaluations, the teaching of sight singing including preference for a specific sight-singing system, and the instructional practices employed in daily rehearsals. High school choral directors from the state of Arizona (N = 86) completed an online researcher-designed questionnaire that gathered demographic information as well as information regarding directors' attitudes towards sight-singing instruction, which exercises are used for sight-singing instruction, and directors' self-perceived ability not only to sight sing but also to teach sight singing. Independent variables such as teaching experience, level of education, the system they were trained to use as a student, the system they currently use in the classroom, their self-perceived ability to sight sing, their self-perceived ability to teach sight singing, their choir's sight-singing rating at festival, and their daily instructional practices (as measured by minutes per week of sight-singing instruction) were used to investigate potential differences in attitudinal responses.

Book excerpt: Despite the theorized benefits of sight-singing in the choral classroom, little research has focused on the changing perceptions of high school choral students regarding sight-singing. The goal of this qualitative study with a historical approach and a grounded theory design is to assess the changing perceptions of high school choral students concerning the task of sight-singing using solfege syllables and Curwen hand signs. The study used a qualitative research approach with a pre-study and post-study questionnaire on sight-singing skills. The students received 1 twenty-minute lesson for four consecutive weeks. The goal of the questionnaire was to assess high school choral students’ feelings and perceptions of sight-singing. This study answers the question of whether the two mentioned tools positively or negatively affect sight-singing accuracy. The data revealed from this study showed that student perceptions were more positive towards the use of solfege syllables, negative about using hand signs, and extremely negative about using both at the same time. The result of this study could encourage high school choral teachers to keep teaching the skills of solfege syllables and hand signs even students are disinterested and motivating becomes challenging. Using this knowledge, music education teachers can confidently and diligently persuade students to keep working on skills to achieve positive results. The study includes a discussion of the findings and conclusions.

Book excerpt: Featuring chapters by the world's foremost scholars in music education and cognition, this handbook is a convenient collection of current research on music teaching and learning. This comprehensive work includes sections on arts advocacy, music and medicine, teacher education, and studio instruction, among other subjects, making it an essential reference for music education programs. The original Handbook of Research on Music Teaching and Learning, published in 1992 with the sponsorship of the Music Educators National Conference (MENC), was hailed as "a welcome addition to the literature on music education because it serves to provide definition and unity to a broad and complex field" (Choice). This new companion volume, again with the sponsorship of MENC, explores the significant changes in music and arts education that have taken place in the last decade. Notably, several chapters now incorporate insights from other fields to shed light on multi-cultural music education, gender issues in music education, and non-musical outcomes of music education. Other chapters offer practical information on maintaining musicians' health, training music teachers, and evaluating music education programs. Philosophical issues, such as musical cognition, the philosophy of research theory, curriculum, and educating musically, are also explored in relationship to policy issues. In addition to surveying the literature, each chapter considers the significance of the research and provides suggestions for future study. Covering a broad range of topics and addressing the issues of music education at all age levels, from early childhood to motivation and self-regulation, this handbook is an invaluable resource for music teachers, researchers, and scholars.

Book excerpt: In the tradition of Daniel Levitin’s This Is Your Brain on Music and Oliver Sacks’ Musicophilia, Bad Singer follows the delightful journey of Tim Falconer as he tries to overcome tone deafness — and along the way discovers what we’re really hearing when we listen to music. Tim Falconer, a self-confessed “bad singer,” always wanted to make music, but soon after he starts singing lessons, he discovers that he’s part of only 2.5 percent of the population afflicted with amusia — in other words, he is scientifically tone-deaf. Bad Singer chronicles his quest to understand human evolution and music, the brain science behind tone-deafness, his search for ways to retrain the adult brain, and his investigation into what we really hear when we listen to music. In an effort to learn more about his brain disorder, he goes to a series of labs where the scientists who test him are as fascinated with him as he is with them. He also sets out to understand why we love music and deconstructs what we really hear when we listen to it. And he unlocks the secret that helps explain why music has such emotional power over us.
