Book excerpt: With norms for sexual behavior constantly changing in both the United States and Asia, there is a need for research examining participation in potentially risky sexual behaviors among Asian and Asian Americans attending college in the United States. This study focused on attachment orientation, hookup motivations, and cultural attitudes as predictors of hookup behaviors, which involve engaging in sexual behaviors without the expectation of a long-term relationship. Participants included 169 Asian or Asian American undergraduate students (107 female; 62 male) ranging in age from 18 to 27 years old who completed an online survey. Results indicated that over a third of participants reported engaging in hookup behaviors and that the strongest predictors of hookup behaviors were increased age, liberal sexual attitudes, and motivations viewing hookups as a way to achieve excitement or to find a long-term partner. These results provide insight into a profile of Asian American college students increasingly exploring sexuality throughout young adulthood.What is the public significance of this article?Results indicate that over a third of Asian and Asian American college students participating in this study reported engaging in hookup behaviors, which involve engaging in sexual behaviors without the expectation of a long-term relationship. Educational programming for Asian American college students should target beliefs and attitudes surrounding the exploration of sexual behaviors throughout young adulthood.

Book excerpt: One important developmental task of young adulthood is the formation of romantic partnerships and initiation of sexual relationships. Unfortunately, in navigating these key developmental tasks, college students may engage in sexual risk behaviors which could lead to negative physical, psychological, and social consequences. Prior research has shown that a substantial number of college women are participating in sexual risk behaviors, such as having one time sexual encounters, inconsistently using condoms, having multiple sequential and simultaneous sexual partners, and drinking heavily before sex. Despite this, only limited research has examined factors that predict and contribute to these sexual risk behaviors. Such work is necessary to develop programs to promote healthy sexual development and expression among college women. Prior research has supported the utility of the contingent consistency peer influence model (CCPIM) in predicting risky drinking among college women. This model posits that that perceived peer norms, actual peer norms, and personal attitudes are independent and key influences on adolescents and young adults' risky behavior. Additionally, prior work has supported the role of certain drinking motives in promoting risky drinking among college students. Similarly, a link between some sexual motives and sexual risk behavior has been established as well. Prior research has supported that certain sexual motives, such as coping and affirmation, predict engagement in sexual risk behaviors. The applicability of the CCPIM with the addition of sexual motives in predicting sexual risk behaviors has not previously been studied together, however. This thesis sought to evaluate the utility of the CCPIM in predicting sexual risk behaviors among college women. Further, the influence of two sexual motives: coping and affirmation, on risky sexual behavior were also examined. To accomplish these aims, 400 sexually active undergraduate women (mean age 18.5 years), were recruited through the ECU Psychology department participant management system to complete an online survey that assessed sexual risk behaviors, drinking behaviors, sexual attitudes, sexual motives, and perceived peer norms for sexual behaviors. Results supported that college women's perceived peer norms as well as coping and affirmation sexual motives significantly predicted sexual risk behaviors, while positive personal attitudes toward sex predicted less engagement in these behaviors. Implications of the findings include the importance both of college women's perception of peer norms for sexual risk behavior and their personal sexual motives as well as the potential protective role of holding positive attitudes toward sex. This highlights that for college women, the strongest component of the CCPIM is perception of peer norms, regardless of actual peer norms, and also highlights the role of sexual motives in sexual risk behaviors. This research suggests that norm corrective interventions could possibly be part of an effective intervention program to reduce college women's engagement in sexual risk behaviors. Further, for some women, sexual risk behaviors may be a result of maladaptive coping strategies and/or used as a means to boost self-esteem or desirability, supporting the potential importance of interventions addressing psychological distress and low self-esteem in also potentially addressing sexual risk. Additionally, future research should focus on expanding these findings to more diverse populations as well as the likely bidirectional relationships between perceived peer norms and risk behavior over time.

Book excerpt: As the Hmong college student population increases, improving services that target retention and persistence becomes more important. Understanding sexual health needs and concerns is one way to ensure academic success for college students. The Hmong are not considered an underrepresented minority group because they are lumped into the broader group of "Asian," which is populated with groups such as the Chinese, Japanese, Korean and Filipinos with higher levels of academic achievements. Unfortunately, empirical data regarding differences in sexual health behaviors and sexual health outcomes among Hmong heterosexual college students are scarce. The study examines the sexual health promotion practices, related outcomes, screening practices, and other prevention behaviors among Hmong college students. The research methodology includes an online survey questionnaire with 64 quantitative questions and one open-ended questionnaire and resulted in a final sample size of 455. For the purpose of this study, only the sexual health needs of traditional age college students who were between the ages of 18-24, single and identify as heterosexual/straight were analyzed. The final number of Hmong student respondents used for this study analysis was 250, with 171 females and 79 males, both with an average age of 20. Data were analyzed statistically using the chi-square test with an alpha level of .05. A one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) between sexually experienced students and Hmongness was conducted to look at the risky behaviors of the respondents. Crosstabulations on sexual health behaviors within sexually experienced (SE) and sexually inexperienced (SI) males and females were analyzed. An independent-samples t-test was run to compare the means between SE males and SE females who have engaged and never engaged in anal intercourse on sexual risk behaviors. Using thematic analysis, one open-ended question was grouped into four themes: 1) advice to college students about sexuality, 2) attitudes and values about sexuality, 3) Hmong culture and sexuality, and 4) type of education needed to appeal to Hmong students. The data analysis indicated Hmong students are like non-Hmong students in that they are delaying marriage/family to pursue education as well as utilizing contraceptive services while underutilizing STI/HIV screening. For SE respondents, the mean age at first intercourse for both sexes was 17 years of age. Males were more likely to have multiple lifetime number of partners (3.43) than females (2.26). More females than males have been tested for STIs (38.7 percent versus 13.3 percent) as well as HIV (33 percent versus 11.1 percent). Condom use was the most common method of contraception reported by male (62.2 percent) as well as female (39 percent). Sexually experienced males masturbated more on a daily and weekly basis (74.4 percent) compared to SE females (42.7 percent). Twenty-five percent of SE males and 37.1 percent of SE females have engaged in anal intercourse. Students who identified strongly with their Hmong culture and values were less likely to participate in several risk-taking behaviors (more than three partners in the last year, one-night stand, sex without a condom, cheating on a partner through intercourse, regretful sex, and anal intercourse). The study found Hmong students who were more acculturated exhibited a greater number of risky behaviors. A better understanding of intergenerational differences, acculturation factors as well as the role of Hmong traditions and family responsibilities further expand our ability to improve the health of Hmong in America. These results suggest that many college bound Hmong men and women are putting higher education before sexual relationships and are crafting a sexual ethic based more on responsibility. Finally, more research is needed that disaggregates Hmong data from the larger API group.

Book excerpt: This study examined factors that contribute to risky sexual behavior in undergraduate college students, with special reference to self-esteem and attitudes toward contraceptive efficacy. Because unintended pregnancies and sexually transmitted infections are prevalent among young adults, the purpose of this study was to gain a deeper understanding of the relationship among factors that contribute to risky sexual behavior. This quantitative, correlational, and descriptive study used a questionnaire and Rosenberg's self-esteem scale to measure levels of the respondent's demographics, sexual health beliefs, knowledge, behaviors, self-esteem and contraceptive efficacy with a nonprobability sample of 76 undergraduate students at California State University, Sacramento. Overall findings showed that higher contraceptive efficacy contributes to safer sexual behaviors, but did not find correlations between self-esteem and sexual behavior. While some aspects of contraceptive efficacy were not strongly related to self-esteem, there is significance to evidence the fact that higher levels of self-esteem can assist in empowering people to stop sex, even at the risk of upsetting their partner, in favor of protecting their own health. The level of fulfillment in respondent's social life was found to correlate to contraceptive efficacy scores in this study. Additionally, higher levels of perceived sexual health knowledge of the respondents is correlated to higher levels of contraceptive efficacy. Recommendations include the need for targeted interventions to increase awareness, knowledge, and efficacy of sexual behavior among young college students; particularly to assist at-risk populations in preventing unintended pregnancies and sexually transmitted infections.

Book excerpt: The present study examined the relationship between views of the female role, mothers' expression of sexual affection, and women's attitudes toward sexual behaviors. Subjects were 122 single middle-class college women from intact families who had some prior experience in heterosexual relationships. Women's scores on the Mother's Expression of Sexual Affection Scale (MESAS) and the Attitudes toward Women Scale (AWS) were used to assign subjects to one of four groups: traditional women whose mothers frequently displayed sexual affection toward their spouses; nontraditional women whose mothers frequently displayed sexual affection toward their spouses; traditional women whose mothers infrequently displayed sexual affection toward their spouses; and nontraditional women whose mothers infrequently displayed sexual affection toward their spouses. A comparison was then made of the four groups' attitudes toward 20 sexual behaviors on the Sexual Attitudes Scale (SAS). A 2 (Woman's role attitude: traditional/nontraditional) x 2 (Mother's expression of sexual affection: frequent/infrequent) analysis of variance was performed on scores for each item. Results revealed that women with more nontraditional attitudes toward the female role held significantly more positive attitudes toward 15 of the 20 sexual behaviors than women with more traditional views. Moreover, it was found that women with more affectionate mothers had significantly more positive attitudes toward four SAS behaviors. These findings demonstrate a clear relationship between female role orientation and sexual attitudes, and suggest that mothers may be sexual role models for a class of less intimate sexual behaviors. Implications of the research for counseling couples with sexual problems were discussed.

The analyses consisted of 65,036 participant's ages 18 to 24, with a mean age of 20.20 years (SD±1.55) who completed the American College Health Association's National College Health Assessment in 2008. The dependent variables were the normative gap of: Number of Partners, Sexual Activity, and Condom Usage. Three one-way ANOVAs with Bonferroni post hoc analyses were used to determine differences between the dependent variables and the following independent variables: age, sexual orientation, and living arrangement. ANOVAs were used to examine the dependent variables and the following independent variables: sex, race, and fraternity/sorority membership. The largest normative gaps across all three dependent variables were seen in: 18 year olds, female participants, minority participants, and those who were not members of fraternities/sororities. There were differences across the dependent variables in terms of sexual orientation with the largest normative gap on number of partners found among heterosexuals, for sexual activity the largest normative gap found among transgender, and for condom usage, the largest normative gap was found among gay and lesbian students. In terms of living arrangements, students living with parents had the largest normative gap on number of partners and sexual activity and students living in residence halls had the largest normative gap for condom usage. Results from this study suggest that each institution analyze sexual health behavior for their campus specifically in order to create programs appropriate for their student population.
