Book excerpt: Applied Financial Accounting: Implications for Analysts presents an analytical explanation as well as practical examples of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), written in a clear, lucid style for readers of all levels. Comprehensive coverage is provided for all accounting and reporting issues that are critical to the financial and credit analyst, with the exposition of GAAP made without the use of mechanical bookkeeping procedures. This is accomplished through an analysis of the financial accounting issue; the effects of GAAP on the balance sheet, income statement, and statement of cash flows; numerical illustrations; alternative treatments; and the impact of GAAP on financial ratios and analytical statistics. The book offers a survey of basic financial statements, related footnote disclosures, and the general concepts underlying financial statements, as well as analyzes of specific statement items. The first three chapters discuss the conceptual foundation of the three basic financial statements, current assets, and noncurrent assets, and provide an analysis of liabilities and stockholders' equity. The study then turns to more complex accounting and reporting problems, including accounting for income taxes, computing earnings per share, and accounting for intercorporate investments, business combinations, pensions, employee options and leases. Professionals in the banking, investment, and accounting fields will find this work to be an effective resource, as will professors and students in business, accounting, and finance courses.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are different types of financial statements – general purpose financial statements, and financial statements prepared for specific purposes. The general objective of financial statements is to provide useful information about an entity's financial position, performance and cash flows to a wide range of users. The general purpose financial statements are directed towards the common information needs of users, especially those who are not in a position to demand reports tailored to meet their particular information needs such as, shareholders, creditors and employees. The nature and degree of the differences between these and the financial statements prepared for special purposes is determined on the basis of users' needs and cost-benefit analyses. Understanding the real matters behind the figures presented and how to situate them with the other details provided is vital to the relevance, reliability and utility of these financial documents to the reader in making an informed judgement.Packed with plenty of practical examples, questions and answers – detailing the uses, analyses and interpretation of accounting ratios - this one-stop resource provides the reader with the necessary tools for understanding, analysing and interpreting financial statements; it offers practical guidance and expertise on how to look at the accounting figures and the stories behind their presentation, the related accounting concepts and terms, with provisions of the IFRS for the Small and Medium Sized Entity. It is principally an invaluable aid to students preparing for examinations in this area of financial accounting, together with any individual wishing to understand and appreciate issues raised in the financial statements as presented by corporate bodies.

Book excerpt: The updated, real-world guide to interpreting and unpacking GAAP and non-GAAP financial statements In Financial Statement Analysis, 5th Edition, leading investment authority Martin Fridson returns with Fernando Alvarez to provide the analytical framework you need to scrutinize financial statements, whether you’re evaluating a company’s stock price or determining valuations for a merger or acquisition. Rather than taking financial statements at face value, you’ll learn practical and straightforward analytical techniques for uncovering the reality behind the numbers. This fully revised and up-to-date 5th Edition offers fresh information that will help you to evaluate financial statements in today’s volatile markets and uncertain economy. The declining connection between GAAP earnings and stock prices has introduced a need to discriminate between instructive and misleading non-GAAP alternatives. This book integrates the alternatives and provides guidance on understanding the extent to which non-GAAP reports, particularly from US companies, may be biased. Understanding financial statements is an essential skill for business professionals and investors. Most books on the subject proceed from the questionable premise that companies' objective is to present a true picture of their financial condition. A safer assumption is that they seek to minimize the cost of raising capital by portraying themselves in the most favorable light possible. Financial Statement Analysis teaches readers the tricks that companies use to mislead, so readers can more clearly interpret statements. Learn how to read and understand financial statements prepared according to GAAP and non-GAAP standards Compare CFROI, EVA, Valens, and other non-GAAP methodologies to determine how accurate companies’ reports are Improve your business decision making, stock valuations, or merger and acquisition strategy Develop the essential skill of quickly and accurately gathering and assessing information from financial statements of all types Professional analysts, investors, and students will gain valuable knowledge from this updated edition of the popular guide. Filled with real-life examples and expert advice, Financial Statement Analysis, 5th Edition, will help you interpret and unpack financial statements.

Book excerpt: U.S. private entities considering adoption of International Standards for Small- and Medium-sized Entities (IFRS for SMEs) need to understand how the new standards will modify financial reporting. However, there has been no determination of the significance of the financial statement impact of changing from United States Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (U.S. GAAP) to IFRS for SMEs. Without this knowledge, private entities in the United States will not be able to make an informed decision as to the benefits or consequences of adopting IFRS for SMEs. Based on stakeholder theory, this study sought to determine how adoption of IFRS for SMEs would affect the financial reporting of U.S. private entities. Using identified reporting differences between the 2 sets of standards, hypothetical 2010 IFRS for SMEs’ financial statements were prepared for 3 participating entities. Analysis of variation between the hypothetical IFRS for SMEs’ financial statements and the original U.S. GAAP financial statements provided a means to determine the financial reporting impact of IFRS for SMEs’ adoption. In each of the 3 case studies, adoption of IFRS for SMEs did not significantly influence the financial reporting of U.S private entities, indicating that the communication of financial information would be fundamentally the same using the simplified IFRS for SMEs or the more complex U.S. GAAP. The results of this study suggest that IFRS for SMEs should be considered an acceptable set of standards for the preparation of quality financial statements by U.S. private entities. This study positively contributes to social change by providing new knowledge to assist private companies in the evaluation of the adoption of IFRS for SMEs; such knowledge could, in turn, reduce financial reporting costs and improve the SMEs’ economic conditions.

Book excerpt: "This text provides a comprehensive introduction to financial accounting. It is aimed at students who are not majoring in accounting as well as those who are. Those studying introductory- level financial accounting as part of their course in business, economics, hospitality management, tourism, engineering, or some other area, should find that the text provides complete coverage of the material at the level required. Students who are majoring in accounting should find the text a useful introduction to the main principles, which can serve as a foundation for further study. The main focus of the text is on the ways in which financial statements and financial information can improve the quality of decision making. To ensure that readers understand the practical implications of the subject, there are, throughout the text, numerous illustrative extracts using commentary from company reports, survey data and other sources. Although some technical issues are dealt with in the text, the main emphasis throughout is on basic principles and underlying concepts. In this tenth edition, we have taken the opportunity to make improvements, including those suggested by students and lecturers who used the previous edition. We have rewritten some material to make it more understandable to readers, and have also increased the number of diagrams. The number of examples from real life have been expanded, as have the number of activities. We have also incorporated developments to International Financial Reporting Standards. Recent developments in auditing are discussed and explained. The text is written in an 'open-learning' style. This means that there are numerous integrated activities, worked examples and questions throughout the text to help you to understand the subject fully. In framing these questions and tasks, we have tried to encourage critical thinking by requiring analysis and evaluation of various concepts and techniques. You are encouraged to interact with the material and to check your progress continually. Irrespective of whether you are using the text as part of a taught course or for personal study, we have found that this approach is more 'user-friendly' and makes it easier for you to learn. We recognise that most of you will not have studied financial accounting before and, therefore, we have tried to write in a concise and accessible style, minimising the use of technical jargon. We have also tried to introduce topics gradually, explaining everything as we go. Where technical terminology is unavoidable we try to provide clear explanations. You will find all of the key terms highlighted in the text, and then listed at the end of each chapter with a page reference. All of these key terms are also listed alphabetically, with a concise definition, in the glossary given in Appendix B. This should provide a convenient point of reference from which to revise. A further important consideration in helping you to understand and absorb the topics covered is the design of the text itself. The page layout and colour scheme have been carefully considered to allow for the easy navigation and digestion of material. The layout features a large page format, an open design, and clear signposting of the various features and assessment material. We hope that you will find the text both readable and helpful"--
