This study investigated the academic effectiveness of a pre-first grade program in a suburban, predominantly Caucasian, upper middle class school system. Twenty-five matched pairs of children were selected for the study based on a readiness score on the Brigance K & 1 screening. Children who spent an extra year in pre-first grade were matched with youngsters who proceeded directly to the first grade based on gender, date of birth, and Brigance score. While no significant differences were found between the two groups of students on the basis of Iowa achievement test scores in reading and language, a significant difference was found between the two groups in mathematics (fourth grade)."--Abstract.

Book excerpt: This study utilized the 2013 language arts data from the Mississippi Curriculum Test II to examine the impact Pre-k has on the reading achievement of low socio-economic African American students. This study was guided by one research question and employed a causal-comparative research design. The research question sought to determine the difference in MCT2 language arts scores of third grade students who participated in a school district’s Pre-k program and those who did not attend the district’s Pre-k program. The results indicated that there was a significant difference in the language arts scores of students who attended Pre-k and those that did not. The study concludes with implications for practicing educators and recommendations for future research.

Book excerpt: The problem this study addressed is the lack of access to high-quality public-school early childhood education for children in small, rural communities in Missouri. The purpose of this quantitative study was to analyze the effects of public-school early childhood education on the reading levels of elementary students in two small midwestern schools. The goal of this study was to add to the body of existing knowledge regarding the impact of early childhood education on students. This study has provided district leaders and stakeholders in Missouri with valuable information to consider when analyzing the cost-benefit factor of adding a preschool program. The results of the independent t-tests on the student data showed that attending one year of preschool did not cause a statistically significant impact on reading achievement of students that participated in the study. While the data did not reflect that all tests in a grade level were statistically significant, there was one set of assessment data per grade level that was significant. The kindergarten letter sound fluency scores from students in School A, the Spell a Sound assessment scores for first graders in School A, second grade Spell a Sound scores from School B, and the third grade MAP scores from School B were all statistically significant. These four tests showed that attending at least one year of public-school preschool did have a significant impact on students’ reading proficiency later in elementary school. Further research is needed to confirm that the significance is in fact correlated to preschool enrollment.
