Preparing it we faced certain difficulties. The thing is that this encyclopedia is a monument to the sea that is disappearing during our lifetime. The world community considers the situation with the Aral Sea and all changes that occurred in its whereabouts in the recent decades as one of the most serious, if not disastrous anthropogenic environmental crises of the 20th century. Before 1960, this was a water-abundant sea-lake that was fourth among world lakes after the Caspian Sea (USSR, Iran), the Great Lakes (USA, Canada) and Victoria Lake (Africa). This was a real ‘‘pearl’’ among the sands of the largest deserts, the Karakums and the Kyzylkums. Navigation between the sea ports Muinak and Aralsk and fisheries famous for the Aral breams, barbells, sturgeons, shemaya, and others were developed here. One could find beautiful recreational zones and beaches here. The deltas of the Amudarya, the major river of Central Asia, and the Syrdarya bringing their waters into the Aral Sea were famous for their biodiversity, fishery, muskrat rearing, reed prod- tion. The local population found occupations related to the water infrastructure.

Its aim is to help ichthyologists with the identification of the species they collect. West Africa, from the Senegal River basin in the North West to the Chad basin in the North East and the Cross River in the South, includes the majority of the Sahelo-Sudan basins, except for the Nile, and the Western Guinea area, covering the Atlantic Coastal Basins from Guinea to Western Cote d'Ivoire. Specialists of each group or family were called to write the chapters. To facilitate the access of this fauna, an English translation is provided for all text. At present, 64 families are described, including 192 genera and 584 valid species. His main research interests are on the systematics and faunistics of Canadian and Middle Eastern fishes. He is the author of over 320 scientific and popular works on fishes including such books as Guide to the Marine Sport Fishes of Atlantic Canada and New England (1992), Encyclopedia of Canadian Fishes (1995), Expedition Field Techniques: Fishes (2nd revised edition, 1998), and Fishes of Tehran Province and adjacent areas (2008). Books on the Arctic Marine Fishes of Canada and the Fishes of Afghanistan are in preparation. His website www.briancoad.com has a Dictionary of Ichthyology with over 23,000 terms defined, Fishes of Canada: Annotated Checklist, and booklength presentations on the Fishes of Canada's National Capital Region and Freshwater Fishes of Iran. He received his B.Sc. in Zoology in 1970 from the University of Manchester, England, an M.Sc. in 1972 from the University of Waterloo, Ontario and a Ph.D. in 1975 from the University of Ottawa.
