At the heart of positive school life are relationships. This research will focus specifically on the relationship between school leaders and staff and the powerful impact of such on school climate. The participants in the study are the K-12 staff across three buildings within the Methacton School District: the high school level, grades 9-12, 173 staff; the upper elementary school level, grade 5-6, 90 staff; and the elementary school level, grades K-4, 55 staff. Using the Comprehensive School Climate Inventory for School Personnel (CSCI) to collect data from staff members, this quantitative study will help determine the impact, power and importance of relationships between staff and school leadership on school climate.

The four public school districts that participated in the study, were located in Southeastern Pennsylvania. The districts were comprised of diverse populations and varied socio-economic backgrounds. The study analyzed the responses of ten principals and forty-seven teachers. Casual links between leadership and climate could not be determined; rather, it was determined that outside variables affected both school leaders and climate. Teachers in low socio-economic status schools rated leadership and school climate low; conversely, teachers in schools with higher socio-economic status rated both leadership and school climate more positively.
Book Synopsis Perceptions of Enlightened Leadership Related to School Climate by : Kathleen Lambe
Download or read book Perceptions of Enlightened Leadership Related to School Climate written by Kathleen Lambe and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 95 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study identified school leaders who were perceived as having qualities of Enlightened Leadership based on principles found in A Spiritual Dimension of Leadership by Houston and Sokolow (2006). The climate of schools led by these individuals was also examined. The Enlightened Leadership Index (ELI) survey assessed both the perceptions of the principal as an enlightened leader and school climate. A comparison was then made to determine if a relationship existed. The Enlightened Leadership Index Interview (ELII) provided selected survey participants with an opportunity to support the ELI data. Surveys and interviews gathered data from five elementary schools and one intermediate school. Responses from 49 teacher participants were tabulated and analyzed. According to this study, it does not appear that perceptions of a principal as an enlightened leader necessarily have an effect on perceptions of school climate. Of the six principals studied, all had one or more weak enlightened qualities of leadership as per ELI data. However, interview data implied that one principal involved in the study exhibited all six qualities of Enlightened Leadership. Most schools had fairly positive climates, however, the interviewee from School D pointed to poor climate in the past. Though some connections may be cautiously made between areas of Enlightened Leadership to very specific climate statements, there does not appear to be any pattern in the data overall.

Book Synopsis School Climate and Culture vis-à-vis Student Learning by : Cletus R. Bulach
Download or read book School Climate and Culture vis-à-vis Student Learning written by Cletus R. Bulach and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2016-08-08 with total page 123 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of School Climate and Culture vis-à-vis Student Learning is to describe a reform that improves test scores, reduces dropouts and decreases bullying behavior. There are six areas that must be improved in order to accomplish this purpose. These six areas are the following: discipline, basic needs of humans, culture and climate, control, parent and community involvement, and levels of openness and trust. Discipline is one of the main problems in classrooms across the US. The authors describe a comprehensive school reform approach that addresses the six areas and reduces resistance to school reform. Creating a “high-performing” school is an organizational approach to school reform that creates a distinctly different school culture and climate than can be found in existing schools. The authors detail a vision and mission for a comprehensive school reform that involves all stakeholders and leads to high performance.
