Book Synopsis The Pre- and Proto-Historic Finns, Both Eastern and Western by : John Abercromby
Download or read book The Pre- and Proto-Historic Finns, Both Eastern and Western written by John Abercromby and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1898 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fifth Baron Abercromby (1841-1924), a soldier and keen archaeologist, published this two-volume work in 1898. His interest in the prehistory of Europe covers both physical remains (his two-volume 1912 work on British and Irish Beaker pottery is also reissued in this series) and ethnographic issues. Using the resources of archaeology, anthropology, linguistics and folklore, this work surveys the history of the Finno-Ugric peoples, the familiar 'Western Finns' (Finns and Estonians), and the less well known 'Eastern Finns', who include various tribes in northern Russia and Siberia. Volume 1 discusses the evidence of geography, archaeology and later history on the origin and movements of the tribes from the early Neolithic to the Iron Age, synthesising archaeological reports and travel narratives from across northern Europe and beyond. Abercromby describes the culture and beliefs of both groups, including discussion of the Finnish national epic, the Kalevala.

Book Synopsis The Key to the Kalevala by : Pekka Ervast
Download or read book The Key to the Kalevala written by Pekka Ervast and published by Blue Dolphin Publishing. This book was released on 1999 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Key to the Kalevala was originally published in Finland in 1916. Now this insightful and detailed exploration of the ancient origins of Finnish mythology is available in English. Students of the ancient traditions and mystical teachings will find no better introduction to the profound esoteric meaning of the Kalevala, the Finnish National Epic, than Ervast's book. This translation is authorized by Ervast's study-school in Finland, whose members have worked to preserve his insights into his culture's past and the spiritual evolution of humanity. We also have the good fortune of being able to use Eino Friberg's beautiful translation of Kalevala (1988) into the modern American idiom. The combined work of Ervast and Friberg results in a unique, insightful, and aesthetically pleasing offering.
Book Synopsis Visions of Past Glory by : Derek Fewster

Book excerpt: Finland, during both prehistoric and medieval times, has been the subject of numerous studies, but none of these have previously considered the nationalist essence of the integral, underlying history culture' or public archaeology' of the nation. Even quite obvious political interpretations, visions, and imageries of an ancient Golden Age have all too easily been dismissed as the consequences of mere patriotism, Kalevala enthusiasm', or Karelianism. This study presents the case for how the conceptions of a distant, glorious past have been advanced and actively developed within the national project of constructing a modern ethnicity of Finnishness. Accordingly, a conception of an original ancient greatness was paramount for the nationalist movements in both the Grand Duchy and the early Republic of Finland, especially so when the perceived nation was considered in need of intellectually unifying defences against the many conceived threats of Russianness after ca 1890. The author traces the construction of a Finnish Great Myth of National Origins from the 16th century until the end of the Second World War, and provides richly illustrated examples of how the process of nation-building influenced and amplified the deep historical core of the emerging Finnish national consciousness.
Book Synopsis Comparative Archaeologies by : Ludomir R Lozny
Download or read book Comparative Archaeologies written by Ludomir R Lozny and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-04-06 with total page 850 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Archaeology, as with all of the social sciences, has always been characterized by competing theoretical propositions based on diverse bodies of locally acquired data. In order to fulfill local, regional expectations, different goals have been assigned to the practitioners of Archaeology in different regions. These goals might be entrenched in local politics, or social expectations behind cultural heritage research. This comprehensive book explores regional archaeologies from a sociological perspective—to identify and explain regional differences in archaeological practice, as well as their existing similarities. This work covers not only the currently-dominant Anglo-American archaeological paradigm, but also Latin America, Western and Eastern Europe, Asia, and Africa, all of which have developed their own unique archaeological traditions. The contributions in this work cover these "alternative archaeologies," in the context of their own geographical, political, and socio-economic settings, as well as the context of the currently accepted mainstream approaches.
