Book excerpt: "How students' experience and learning in an educational context influence their self-directed learning and behavior outside of school has always been an important question in education. Scholars have named the effects of physical education (PE) on students' out-of-school physical activity (PA) as the "PE effect". The purposes of this dissertation research were to first test a two-pathway model of the "PE effect" and then determine the extent to which a concept-based PE curriculum influenced middle-school students' PA behavior outside of the school. Specifically, the following research questions were addressed: (a) to what extent did eighth graders' knowledge and autonomous motivation for PE contribute to their autonomous motivation toward PA and, subsequently, influence their out-of-school PA? (b) Did eighth-grade students who had experienced the Science of Healthful Living (SHL) curriculum have higher levels of knowledge, autonomous motivation for PE, autonomous motivation toward PA, and out-of-school PA than those who had not? A total of 394 eighth-grade students from five schools participated in this study, in which 168 students studied the SHL curriculum when they were in sixth grade while 226 students only experienced traditional PE. Students' knowledge, out-of-school PA, and autonomous motivation toward PE and PA were measured using valid self-report instruments. Structural equation modelling was used to test the two-pathway model of the "PE effect". A static group comparison design was adopted to answer the second research question. Results showed that students' knowledge had a direct, positive relationship on their autonomous motivation toward PA and an indirect, positive relationship on out-of-school PA through influencing autonomous motivation toward PA. Students' autonomous motivation for PE had a direct, positive relationship on their autonomous motivation toward PA and an indirect, positive relationship on out-of-school PA through autonomous motivation toward PA. The results also showed that the students who had studied the SHL PE curriculum had significantly higher levels of knowledge, autonomous motivation toward PA, and out-of-school PA than the students who had experienced the traditional, multi-activity PE. No significant difference was found for autonomous motivation for PE. These results indicate that the two-pathway model is tenable in terms of knowledge learning and autonomous motivation in PE and imply that teaching knowledge in an autonomy-supportive PE environment can be an effective way to promote students' out-of-school PA behavior. The findings about the effects of the SHL curriculum further supported the knowledge learning pathway of the "PE effect" and indicate that the concept-based PE approach could be an effective model to promote students' PA behavior outside of the school."--Abstract from author supplied metadata.

The study analyzed the differences in participants' self-esteem on days they had PE versus days they had Encore class (i.e. journalism, drama, art, global awareness, stem, and music). Participants were 25 students in an intact sixth-grade PE class (10 girls, 15 boys) at a middle school in a suburb of Chicago. Data were collected from two sources, pedometers recording number of steps taken daily and scores on Harter's Global Self-Worth Scale, a measure of self-esteem. Data were analyzed using SPSS to determine a) average number of steps taken for each participant on PE days, b) number of steps taken by each participant on non-PE days, c) average global self-worth on PE days, d) average global self-worth scores on non-PE days, e) the degree of relationship between the number of steps taken and global self-worth on PE and Encore days, and f) the degree of difference between average steps taken on PE versus non-PE days. Findings indicate that students tend to take more steps on PE days than on Encore days. While students participating in PE do tend to rate their global self-worth slightly higher than when they participate in Encore days, there is no statistically significant relationship between steps taken and global self-worth.

Book excerpt: A large body of evidence suggests physical activity is inversely associated with several cardio-metabolic risk factors among children and adolescents. Despite these health benefits, a majority of youth are not meeting the physical activity guidelines set forth by the USDHHS. Schools have been identified as an ideal vehicle for interventions; however, research evidence indicates school-based interventions are not effective at increasing outside of school physical activity. Goal setting may be a potential effective strategy for increasing physical activity among youth; however no previous studies have examined the effects of goal setting on cardiorespiratory fitness and physical activity in middle school students. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to evaluate the effects of a S.M.A.R.T. goal setting and self-monitoring intervention on fitness and physical activity in middle school students. Two middle schools in Tallahassee, FL participated in this study. One school served as the intervention and the other served as a delayed intervention measurement only control. The students in the intervention school completed a one-time S.M.A.R.T. goal setting lesson. During the lesson, students were taught the definition of a goal, the importance of goal setting, and how to set S.M.A.R.T. goals. As part of the lesson, students completed a S.M.A.R.T. goal setting worksheet. The objectives of the worksheet activity were to teach students the concepts of S.M.A.R.T. goal setting and to apply this knowledge by creating personal fitness goals. Student fitness goals were entered into an interactive website that acted as a self-monitoring tool. Before and after the intervention, participating students completed a survey assessing student demographics, physical activity, and physical activity self-efficacy. Cardiorespiratory fitness levels, assessed by the PACER test, were also measured pre and post. Betweengroup differences in post-test scores, adjusted for baseline levels, were assessed for statistical significance using ANCOVA. Additional covariates included gender, race/ethnicity, grade level and weight status. Book excerpt: The present study was carried out with the intention to evaluate two different after school joint-use running programs located in the Southern part of the United States. The Champion Running Program (CRP), a nonprofit organization that was present in middle and high schools in 2015-2016, and Speed Zone Running Program (SZRP), a nonprofit organization that took over the CRP and changed the name and the curriculum, were implemented into six middle schools in the consecutive academic school year. A multiphase mixed methods research design was conducted to evaluate CRP and SZRP. Phase 1 is a descriptive study, designed to inform the next phase of study by examining the structures, purpose, mission, and goals of the two running programs. Through inductive coding of websites, curricula, student log notebooks, and a coach’s interview transcript, all data were interpreted by the data sources collectively. Phase 2, guided by the findings of Phase 1, used valid, reliable surveys to measure the program effects of psychosocial factors of enjoyment (i.e. Physical Activity Enjoyment Scale; PACES; Kendzierski & DeCarlo, 1991), school connectedness (i.e. School Connectedness Survey; McNeely, Nonnemaker, & Blum, 2002), grit as a measure of pererverance (i.e. Short Grit Scale; Duckworth & Quinn, 2009), and self-efficacy (i.e. Self-efficacy Survey; Motl et al., 2002) towards physical activity. In total, 119 middle school students (101 CRP and 18 SZRP) and one running club coach,volunteered to participate in this study. Phase 1 revealed the structures of CRP and SZRP varied considerably. Three overarching themes emerged from all the data sources: Accessibility, supporting goals for participants and coaches, and format of the program. Phase 2, a quantitative analysis using ANOVAs, found that members of SZRP reported significantly higher scores on physical activity enjoyment t(84)= -2.45, p= .016 and school connectedness t(99)=-8.42, p=.00. Both nonprofit after school running programs supported the mission of getting students to be physically active, but each enacted varying approaches to achieve this goal. Members of SZRP had higher levels of physical activity enjoyment and school connectedness compared to participants of CRP. Future research should compare other types of after school programs and use larger sample sizes

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to compare traditional physical education with Zumba to determine which method is the most appropriate and beneficial to the psychological development and well-being of children and adolescents, as well as the ability to increase the activity rates and levels in the United States. Design: Survey/Questionnaire and Observation Experimental Methods: Participants included a total of 53 students, currently enrolled in one of two PA elective courses, physical education or Zumba dance class. Participants included students in both the 7th and 8th grades, ages ranging from 11 to 14 years, at a rural middle school located in northern California. Methods included measurements of body composition, PA levels, as well as psychological well-being. Body composition was determined by pre-and post-body mass index measurement. Physical activity levels were measured with ActiGraph accelerometers, worn on four separate occasions, by all participants. Psychological well-being was measured pre-and post-using the Physical Self-Description Questionnaire - short form (PSDQ-S). Seventh and eighth grades students, ages 11-14 years, were recruited from a rural middle school located in Northern California. The 55 students were enrolled in either an elective traditional physical education course or an elective Zumba physical education course. Results: An independent t-test was conducted using the IBM SPSS program and showed no significance difference between the traditional physical education group and the Zumba group, on all variables measured, except in steps per minute and kcals expended. A significant difference was found in steps per minute and kcals, favoring the physical education group. A dependent t-test was also conducted, finding no significant difference of pre- to post-measurements of BMI and PSDQ-S questionnaire, within both sample groups. Conclusion: Study findings support an equality among sample groups on measured variables with the exceptions of steps per minute and kcal expenditure, suggesting that alternative physical activity courses, such as Zumba, can be as beneficial as a traditional physical education course in levels of BMI, PA levels of MVPA and time spend in sedentary movement, and physical self-description scales of physical self-concept, esteem, and global esteem.
