Book excerpt: The role of hydrogen in the initiation of near-neutral pH stress corrosion cracks was studied. Hydrogen content was measured for X-52 steel in various conditions. The effect of elevated hydrogen concentrations on room temperature creep behaviour of X-52 pipeline steel was investigated experimentally. Extensive finite element modelling of the concentrations and locations of hydrogen around corrosion pits on pressurized line pipe in near-neutral pH solution was completed. The effects of stress and geometry on equilibrium hydrogen concentration were studied. A material model simulating the effects of hydrogen enhanced localized plasticity was used to investigate the role of hydrogen in crack initiation. Throughout the modelling, two distinct hydrogen trapping models were used and compared. In steels, the majority of hydrogen is found to reside in traps at cementite interfaces and grain boundaries, yet related work has found that NNpHSCC proceeds transgranularly through ferrite. Implications for understanding NNpHSCC crack initiation are discussed.

Download or read book Hydrogen in Steel written by Michael Smialowski and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2014-05-09 with total page 469 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hydrogen in Steel: Effect of Hydrogen on Iron and Steel During Production, Fabrication, and Use focuses on the effect of hydrogen on iron and steel during production, fabrication, and use. Topics covered range from the solubility of hydrogen in iron and ferrous alloys to the diffusion and permeation of hydrogen through iron and steel. Electrochemical problems related to the ability of iron to absorb hydrogen from aqueous solutions are also considered. Comprised of 19 chapters, this book begins with a detailed treatment of the nature and properties of metal-hydrogen systems, paying particular attention to the behavior of hydrogen in the bulk of the metal phase and the mechanism of reactions between metals and hydrogen or hydrogen-producing compounds. The reader is then introduced to the solubility of hydrogen in iron and ferrous alloys as well as the nature of the final product of the hydrogen-iron interaction. Subsequent chapters deal with dimensional changes and stresses produced in steel by cathodically evolved hydrogen; the effects of hydrogen on the physical, mechanical, and chemical properties of iron and steel; influence of welding on hydrogen; and sulfide corrosion cracking of steel. The effects of pickling on steel are also examined, along with the blistering and embrittlement caused by hydrogen on the base metal during electroplating. This book will be of value to students and practitioners in the field of physical chemistry.

Book Synopsis The Role of Hydrogen in the Stress Corrosion Failure of High Strength A1-Zn-Mg Alloys and Sensitised Austenitic Stainless Steels by : L. Christodoulou

This book was released on 1978 with total page 27 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The report is divided into two parts covering each of the materials studied. Part 1. It has been found that exposure of an Al-Zn-Mg alloy to water vapour saturagated air results in loss of ductility and subsequent formation of hydrogen bubbles at high energy sites such as grain boundaries. The rate of embrittlement depends upon the prior heat treatment of the alloy: thus for a given hydrogen level one microstructure may be brittle while another may still exhibit some ductility. Fractographic studies have indicated that the distribution of hydrogen within the alloy determines the mode of fracture. Part 2. Experimental techniques have been developed to study the stress corrosion of stainless steel. Preliminary characterisation of the material (302 grade stainless steel) is in progress. In both parts of the report proposed future studies are described.
