Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to investigate the correlation between the personal values of Air Force company grade officers and their decision of whether or not to remain in the Air Force for a career. The study objectives were to determine whether officer value systems are correlated with different levels of career intent, to determine if these value systems are unique, and to synopsize the past research into Air Force officer values conducted at AFIT. The study is based on the findings of this past research which showed that officers in different career fields and as a group do possess unique and measureable value systems. The study found that officers who expressed a common level of career intent also shared a common set of values, and these sets of values differed from those shared by officers expressing a different level of career intent. The study also found that different subgroups of officers, when separated by job type and level of career intent, exhibit no only common by also unique value hierarchies. These findings should be considered preliminary because of the limited sample of career fields and the insignificant sample sizes of several of the subgroups studied. Keywords: Military thesis; Personnel management; Careers. (kt).

Book excerpt: The general purpose of this study was to identify and analyze the individual perceptions and attitudes which affect the career selection decision of Air Force Systems Command company grade officers. This research included a literature review of recent work in the area of career turnover. The review identified two major theoretical developments which were postulated to add significant predictive power to Lewis' approach: (1) the effect of a person's motivation to comply with the expectations of others and (2) the effect of a person's current job satisfaction. The purpose was to operationalize the aforementioned concepts in a single model which explained the most variance in individual career intentions. A survey was completed by 2200 company grade officers throughout Systems Command. The results of the data analyses showed that a model which addressed not only the perceived attraction of job alternatives, but also the effects of the expectations of others, and current job satisfaction more accurately described an individual's career selection decision.

Book excerpt: Because an individual's values are important determinants of behavior, this research first described the personal value systems of Air Force pilots with less than eight years of commissioned service. Having established that a common value system existed among all pilots and that pilots also have a common perceived organizational value system, the researchers investigated personal and perceived organizational value systems in relation to career intentions. The pilot's personal value systems were found to conflict with their perceived organizational value systems. This conflict existed among all pilots, but the conflict was greatest among the pilots who were planning to separate from active duty. The individual value conflicts suggest possible personnel policy changes to enhance Air Force pilot retention.

Book excerpt: A survey sample of newly-commissioned officers drawn from all procurement sources completed a questionnaire concerned with personal data and attitudes toward and Air Force career. Responses were validated against the criterion item of stated career intent. A key developed on half of the sample was applied to the other half with a resulting correlation of .43 between the empirical score and statement of expressed career intent. Descriptions of career and noncareer officers emerged from response frequencies to the personal and biographical items. More of the noncareer entering officers are single, had a stable home life, were in the upper third of their class, attended private schools, and had a specialized college major; while more of the career officers are married, had a transient home life, began working early, attended state universities, and were in the middle third of their class. A previously derived 'Retainability Score' proved only moderately predictive of expressed career intentions. Sources with the most favorable career-noncareer ratios were the service academies and the now-defunct Officer Candidate School. These ratios determined at time of commissioning formed much the same pattern and were only slightly higher than actual retention ratios previously determined for other samples. (Author).

Book excerpt: This thesis examined the retention decisions of company grade supply officers in the United States Air Force. Specifically, the relationships between organizational commitment and the components of job satisfaction were examined with three aspects of career intent: (1) intention to presently remain in supply, (2) intention to permanently remain in supply, and (3) intention to make the Air Force a career. Also, demographic variables about Air Force supply officers were collected and reported. Data collection was accomplished by survey method. The Job Descriptive Indices were used to measure the components of job satisfaction. Porter's Organizational Commitment Scale questionnaire was used to measure organizational commitment. Original questions were developed to measure the three aspects of career intent. Analysis of the data was accomplished using simple and multiple linear regression. The results of this investigation illustrate the varying abilities of organizational commitment and the components of job satisfaction to predict the different aspects of expressed career intent. The results indicate that the direct work related components of job satisfaction (work satisfaction, co-worker satisfaction, and supervision satisfaction) are most strongly related to and are the best predictors of expressed career intention to presently and permanently remain in supply, while organizational commitment is most strongly related to and is the best predictor of expressed career intention to make the Air Force a career.
