Book excerpt: Excerpt from Surgical Diagnosis: A Manual for Students and Practitioners Until the last few decades the surgeon's efforts were limited to organs lying on the surface and directly accessible. Aseptic methods and improvements in operative technique have meantime brought the internal organs within the range of successful treatment, and this enlargement of the surgical field has necessitated the introduction of new methods of diagnosis and improvements upon the old. In the present volume the author has endeavored to cover the whole subject concisely and in its modern development. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual of Surgical Diagnosis This little book is intended mainly for dressers and junior practitioners, and is the outcome of more than twenty years of practical experience in the teaching of clinical surgery. Surgical diagnosis is so vast a subject, and so closely connected with pathology and other branches of surgery and medicine, that it is difficult to write of it as a separate entity. It is a subject with no beginning and no end, so intricate and far reaching are the questions involved in surgical diagnosis. It is hoped, however, that a book which does not attempt to deal fully with every detail of surgical diagnosis, but concerns itself rather with the principles involved and with the methods of examination that ought to be adopted in individual cases, may serve a useful purpose. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Practical Treatise on Surgical Diagnosis: Designed as a Manual for Practitioners and Students in Medicine Scarcely more than a year has yet elapsed since the first edition of this work was given to the public. At that time, the question whether the plan of the book would meet professional favor was certainly an open one, and it affords some personal gratification that the increasing demand for the work, both as a text-book and as an aid to the general practitioner, justifies a revision of its matter and an addition to its former pages. I have changed my opinion somewhat since this work was first issued, as to the advisability of employing the plan of contrast of symptoms, in the form of differential tables, to the exclusion of de scriptive text; as I have found that, however valuable they might be as a summary to the student, or as an aid to the practitioner at the bedside, such tables alone will not fill the requirements of a text-book, or be as generally useful as if accompanied by a concise and general enumeration of the etiology and symptomatology of each of the more important diseases to which the attention of the surgeon is most often directed, and which must, therefore, form the basis of most lectures given to the student. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Student's Manual of Surgical Diagnosis The chief aim of the practicing surgeon should be to eradicate disease, to repair the results of bodily injury, and to relieve suffering. Success in treatment depends largely upon accurate diagnosis. Every student of medicine, therefore, at an early period should acquire a diagnostic method which in the end will enable him to recognize with a reasonable degree of accuracy the various surgical lesions and pathologic processes. The methods of reasoning employed by different surgeons and teachers, in arriving at a diagnosis in a given case, differ widely. The two extremes would be represented by the methods popularly known as the "snap diagnosis," and the "diagnosis by exclusion." The following circumstance will give a fair idea of the two methods. An eminent practitioner of internal medicine was called to attend a middle aged woman suffering from continuous fever, progressive loss of weight and strength, and mild delirium. On entering the patient's room he was told that the illness began by headache, loss of appetite, and general malaise; that the symptoms had gradually increased in severity for ten days, during the last eight of which the patient had remained in bed. There had been no chill, no vomiting, no cough, no pain, no diarrhea, and no urinary disturbances. The patient appeared dull, the lips were dry, the mouth partly open showing the teeth covered with sordes. His examination consisted in looking at the tongue, which was heavily coated, and hastily palpating the abdomen, which was slightly distended and presented a firm oval tumor in the splenic region. The temperature was 104, pulse 100, respiration 20. As a result of his five-minute visit and one-minute examination he stated that the patient was suffering from typhoid fever, and advised her removal to the hospital. Mention must be made, likewise, of the freedom with which the ideas of Gibbon, Harte, Hearn, Hutchinson, Keen, Le Conte, and Roberts have been appropriated. When he is called in, he is expected to treat and, if possible, cure. Frequently a diagnosis is Wanted by a patient or his family, but the request for help is always most urgent. Any therapeutic efforts, however, must necessarily be useless, or worse than useless, without exact scientific diagnosis. Any undue haste is sevem avenged. Modern surgery, with its attractions, has led a great many physicians into surgical work, and as a result probatory incision, without due prep aration or a diagnosis, is found only too frequently on cards for hospital Operations. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual of Surgery, Vol. 1 of 3: General Surgery The object of this work is to give a succinct account of modern surgical pathology, diagnosis, and treatment, and it is intended as a manual for practitioners and students. Much of merely historical interest has been purposely omitted, partly on account of want of space, and partly because a repetition of what is already in print, but now out of date, is undesirable. In a work such as this it must necessarily happen that certain rare conditions can only be treated of briefly; but so far as possible, I have embodied the results of sixteen years' experience as a hospital surgeon and teacher. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual of Surgery, For: Students and Physicians The manuscript of the fifth edition of this manual was practically completed by Dr. Stewart at the time of his death. His revision included radical changes in and many additions to those portions dealing with surgical technic, surgical infection and disinfection, wounds, effects of heat and cold, shock, plastic operations, blood transfusion, fractures, and amputations; also the bones, joints, nerves, chest, intestines, rectum, kidney and bladder. He wrote a new chapter on unnecessary abdominal section and rewrote the sections on the abdomen, stomach, operations on the stomach, intestines, intestinal obstruction, biliary passages and the pancreas. At the suggestion of Dr. Stewart, a study of military surgery was begun in 1915 with service in the French army and continued until my discharge from the American army in 1919. The results of this military experience have been incorporated in this edition. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2018-03-20 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual of Surgical Treatment, Vol. 1 of 6 The subject of Surgery has now become so extensive that any work attempting to deal with it in an exhaustive manner must necessarily be so large and unwieldy as to be suitable only for purposes of reference, or for the use of those who devote themselves exclusively to its practice. In any text-book of convenient size the information given in certain branches of the subject must therefore be considerably condensed, and, as the first essential for the beginner is to have the fullest knowledge of the nature and characters of the diseases that he has to study, special stress is usually laid upon pathology, symptomatology, and diagnosis. For the practitioner, on the other hand, who is already acquainted with these points, the great essential is full and detailed information as to the best methods of treatment. We have ourselves frequently experienced the want of detailed informa tion, especially. As regards the after-treatment'of our cases, and have had to learn the best methods of procedure from experience. Nothing can of course replace experience, but it is often of the greatest advantage to have a detailed record of that of others upon which to base one's work. It is this want that the present work is intended to supply. We have tried to put ourselves in the place of those who have to treat a given case for the first time, and we have endeavoured to supply them with details as to treatment from the commencement to the termination of the illness. We have assumed that the reader is familiar with the nature and diagnosis of the disease, and we only refer to the pathology and symptoms in so far as it is necessary to render intelligible the principles on which the treatment is based, and the various stages of the disease to which each particular method is applicable.
