Book Synopsis Safety of Silicone Breast Implants by : Institute of Medicine
Download or read book Safety of Silicone Breast Implants written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2000-01-06 with total page 559 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Dow Corning case raised serious questions about the safety of silicone breast implants and about larger issues of medical device testing and patient education. Safety of Silicone Breast Implants presents a well-documented, thoughtful exploration of the safety of these devices, drawing conclusions from the available research base and suggesting further questions to be answered. This book also examines the sensitive issues surrounding women's decisions about implants. In reaching conclusions, the committee reviews: The history of the silicone breast implant and the development of its chemistry. The wide variety of U.S.-made implants and their regulation by the Food and Drug Administration. Frequency and consequences of local complications from implants. The evidence for and against links between implants and autoimmune disorders, connective tissue disease, neurological problems, silicone in breast milk, or a proposed new syndrome. Evidence that implants may be associated with lower frequencies of breast cancer. Safety of Silicone Breast Implants provides a comprehensive, well-organized review of the science behind one of the most significant medical controversies of our time.
Download or read book Science on Trial written by Marcia Angell and published by W. W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 1997 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the early 1990s, sympathetic juries awarded huge damages to women claiming injury from silicone breast implants, leading to a $4.25 billion class-action settlement that still wasn't large enough to cover all the claims. Shockingly, rigorous scientific studies of breast implants have now shown that there is no significant link between breast implants and disease. Why were the courts and the public so certain that breast implants were dangerous when medical researchers were not? The answer to this question reveals important differences in the way science, the law, and the public regard evidence--and not just in the breast implant controversy.

Book Synopsis This Mortal Coil by : Fay Bound Alberti
Download or read book This Mortal Coil written by Fay Bound Alberti and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2016-04-08 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To many people the idea that 'the body' has its own history might sound faintly ridiculous. The body and its experiences are usually seen as something that we share with people from the past. Like 'human nature', it represents the unchanging in a changing world. Bodies just are... But the body does have a history. The way that it moves, feels, breathes, and engages with the world has been viewed very differently across times and cultures. For centuries, 'we' were believed to be composed of souls that were part of the body and inseparable from it. Now we exist in our heads, and our bodies have become the vessels for that uncertain and elusive thing we call our 'true selves'. The way we understand the material structure of the body has also changed radically over the centuries. From the bones to the skin, from the senses to the organs of sexual reproduction, every part of the body has an ever-changing history, dependent on time, culture, and place. This Mortal Coil is an exploration of that history. Peeling away our assumptions about the unchanging nature of the human body, Fay Bound Alberti takes it apart in order to put it back anew, telling the cultural history of our key organs and systems from the inside out, from blood to guts, brains to sex organs. The understanding of the 'modern body' she reveals in the process is far removed from the 'eternal' or timeless object of common assumption. In fact, she argues, its roots go back no further than the sixteenth century at the earliest - and it has only truly existed in its current form since the nineteenth century.

Book Synopsis Registries for Evaluating Patient Outcomes by : Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality/AHRQ
Download or read book Registries for Evaluating Patient Outcomes written by Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality/AHRQ and published by Government Printing Office. This book was released on 2014-04-01 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This User’s Guide is intended to support the design, implementation, analysis, interpretation, and quality evaluation of registries created to increase understanding of patient outcomes. For the purposes of this guide, a patient registry is an organized system that uses observational study methods to collect uniform data (clinical and other) to evaluate specified outcomes for a population defined by a particular disease, condition, or exposure, and that serves one or more predetermined scientific, clinical, or policy purposes. A registry database is a file (or files) derived from the registry. Although registries can serve many purposes, this guide focuses on registries created for one or more of the following purposes: to describe the natural history of disease, to determine clinical effectiveness or cost-effectiveness of health care products and services, to measure or monitor safety and harm, and/or to measure quality of care. Registries are classified according to how their populations are defined. For example, product registries include patients who have been exposed to biopharmaceutical products or medical devices. Health services registries consist of patients who have had a common procedure, clinical encounter, or hospitalization. Disease or condition registries are defined by patients having the same diagnosis, such as cystic fibrosis or heart failure. The User’s Guide was created by researchers affiliated with AHRQ’s Effective Health Care Program, particularly those who participated in AHRQ’s DEcIDE (Developing Evidence to Inform Decisions About Effectiveness) program. Chapters were subject to multiple internal and external independent reviews.
Book Synopsis Augmentation Mastopexy by : M. Bradley Calobrace
Download or read book Augmentation Mastopexy written by M. Bradley Calobrace and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-10-05 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Breast augmentation paired with mastopexy is often regarded as a challenging procedure since it is essentially two surgeries in one. Because of the complexity of the dual procedure, as well as the careful planning required, many doctors avoid performing these surgeries together, instead preferring their patient to undergo two separate surgeries. These two procedures can be safely performed with methodical planning and intra operative execution. This book provides not only insight and instruction on a variety of mastopexy procedures and accompanying types of breast augmentation, but it will also help the clinician determine the optimal surgery for each individual patient. Primarily meant for practicing aesthetic plastic surgeons, Augmentation Mastopexy -- Mastering the Art in the Management of the Ptotic Breast will also find use among plastic surgery fellows and plastic surgery residents. Unlike some of the competitive literature that briefly touches on the topic or simply provides an overview, the information provided is methodical and comprehensive, providing a wealth of color images to accompany the techniques described. Case studies with long-term follow up are also included, offering not only an understanding of potential pitfalls but a veritable how-to for handling complications when they do arise.
