Book excerpt: Dr. Boudinot advances plausible reasons in support of his theory that the aborigines of America were the lineal descendants of the "long lost tribes of Israel," and collects and imbodies many interesting facts on that subject. The opinion that the American Indians are descended from the Jews, is an idea that has been in vogue ever since their discovery. While the mere fact that this opinion is so frequently revived does not prove, there is any real resemblance, Dr. Elias Boudinot brings together many interesting facts in support of the theory of migration of the ten tribes of Israel from the regions into which they were carried captive by Salmanazer, king of Assyria, to the straits of Kamchatka, across which they passed to the American continent. In support of his theory, Boudinot provides instances of close similarities between Israelites and Native Americans in the following areas: * Their language, * Their received traditions, * Their established customs and habits, * Their known religious rites and ceremonies, * And lastly, their publick worship, and religious opinions and prejudices. Of these lost tribes present in the Americas, Boudinot writes: "There is a possibility, that these unhappy children of misfortune, may yet be proved to be the descendants of Jacob and the long lost tribes of Israel. And if so, that though cast off for their heinous transgressions, they have not been altogether foresaken; and will hereafter appear to have been, in all their dispersions and wanderings, the subjects of God's divine protection and gracious care." About the author: Elias Boudinot (1740 - 1821) was a lawyer and statesman from Elizabeth, New Jersey who was a delegate to the Continental Congress (more accurately referred to as the Congress of the Confederation) and served as President of Congress from 1782 to 1783. He was elected as a U.S. Congressman for New Jersey following the American Revolutionary War. He was appointed by President George Washington as Director of the United States Mint, serving from 1795 until 1805. Boudinot, after his retirement, devoted himself to a life of Christian beneficence. In 1772 he was chosen a trustee of the College of New Jersey, in which office he continued until his death, founding in 1805, at an expense of three thousand dollars, the Cabinet of Natural History. In 1812 he became a corporate member of the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions, and in 1816 the first president of the American Bible Society, contributing to its funds ten thousand dollars, and aiding also in the erection of the first Bible House. Other works by Boudinot include: * 1790, "The Age of Revelation, or the Age of Reason shown to be an Age of Infidelity;" * 1793, a Fourth of July oration, delivered at Elizabeth Town before the New Jersey Society of the Cincinnati; * 1806, "The Life of the Rev. William Tennent;" * 1811, an address delivered before the New Jersey Bible Society; * 1815, "Second Advent of the Messiah."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The legendary story of the ten lost tribes of Israel has resonated among both Jews and Christians down through the centuries: the compelling idea that some core group of humanity was ''lost'' and exiled to a secret place, perhaps someday to return triumphant. In The Ten Lost Tribes, Zvi Ben-Dor Benite shows for the first time the extent to which the search for the lost tribes of Israel became, over two millennia, an engine for global exploration and a key mechanism for understanding the world. As the book reveals, the quest for the missing tribes and the fervent belief that their restitution marked a necessary step toward global redemption have been threaded through countless historical moments--from the formation of the first ''world'' empires to the age of discovery, and from the spread of European imperialism to the rise of modern-day evangelical apocalypticism. More than a historical survey of an enduring myth, The Ten Lost Tribes offers a unique prism through which to view the many facets of encounters between cultures, the processes of colonization, and the growth of geographical knowledge.

Book excerpt: Even before the Civil War, American writers were imagining life after a massive global catastrophe. For many, the blank slate of the American continent was instead a wreckage-strewn wasteland, a new world in ruins. Bringing together epic and lyric poems, fictional tales, travel narratives, and scientific texts, Postapocalyptic Fantasies in Antebellum American Literature reveals that US authors who enthusiastically celebrated the myths of primeval wilderness and virgin land also frequently resorted to speculations about the annihilation of civilizations, past and future. By examining such postapocalyptic fantasies, this study recovers an antebellum rhetoric untethered to claims for historical exceptionalism - a patriotic rhetoric that celebrates America while denying the United States a unique position outside of world history. As the scientific field of natural history produced new theories regarding biological extinction, geological transformation, and environmental collapse, American writers responded with wild visions of the ancient past and the distant future.

Book excerpt: The belief that Native Americans might belong to the fabled “lost tribes of Israel”—Israelites driven from their homeland around 740 BCE—took hold among Anglo-Americans and Indigenous peoples in the United States during its first half century. In Lost Tribes Found, Matthew W. Dougherty explores what this idea can tell us about religious nationalism in early America. Some white Protestants, Mormons, American Jews, and Indigenous people constructed nationalist narratives around the then-popular idea of “Israelite Indians.” Although these were minority viewpoints, they reveal that the story of religion and nationalism in the early United States was more complicated and wide-ranging than studies of American “chosen-ness” or “manifest destiny” suggest. Telling stories about Israelite Indians, Dougherty argues, allowed members of specific communities to understand the expanding United States, to envision its transformation, and to propose competing forms of sovereignty. In these stories both settler and Indigenous intellectuals found biblical explanations for the American empire and its stark racial hierarchy. Lost Tribes Found goes beyond the legal and political structure of the nineteenth-century U.S. empire. In showing how the trope of the Israelite Indian appealed to the emotions that bound together both nations and religious groups, the book adds a new dimension and complexity to our understanding of the history and underlying narratives of early America.
