Its aim is merely to enable the newspaper-reader to fill in the gaps in his mental panorama of Cretan struggles by a few rough etchings mostly taken from life. The writer takes this opportunity of expressing his sincere thanks to Mr. Melton Prior for his kindly and valuable assistance, to the proprietors of the Illustrated London News for permission to reproduce the illustrations, of which they own the copyright, and also to the editor of the Daily Chronicle and the manager of the Times for permitting him to make use of letters and telegrams contributed by him to the former journal in 1896, and to the latter this year. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Discoveries in Crete and Their Bearing on the History of Ancient Civilisation The present book is an attempt to meet a need that has been widely felt during the last few years, not only by classical scholars, but by the general cultured public. Mr. Arthur Evans's discoveries at Knossos made an impression on the popular imagination when they were first presented to the world six years ago, and the impression was deepened by the wonderful exhibition of Cretan art at Burlington House two years later. Even at that time, however, the accounts of the excavations that were accessible to the public were as fragmentary as they were fascinating. Since then the mass of new material has been so great that it has taken Mr. Evans all his time to publish the details as they came out in the various learned Journals which had a right to expect them. The promptness with which the result of each years work has appeared is remarkable, and it has been out of the question to expect from Mr. Evans a general survey of the ground until the completion of the excavations. These have now been going on for six years, at Knossos and on other Cretan sites, and are not nearly completed. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Crete the Forerunner of Greece The recent discoveries in Crete have added a new horizon to European civilization. A new standpoint has been at the same time obtained for surveying not only the Ancient Classical World of Greece and Rome, but the modern world in which we live. This revelation of the past has thus more than an archaeological interest. It concerns all history and must affect the mental attitude of our own and future generations in many departments of knowledge. At the same time, the complexity of the details and the multiplicity of the recent explorations, and the fact that many of the results are as yet imperfectly published, must make it extremely difficult for the ordinary intelligent reader to gain a comprehensive idea of this "Greece beyond Greece," brought to light on Cretan soil. For more advanced archaeological students, indeed, Mr. Ronald Burrows' work on The Recent Discoveries in Crete has supplied a useful summary. But for the general reading public a simpler statement was required, and it seems to me that this service has been successfully rendered by Mr. and Mrs. Hawes in the present book. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Crete in the Greek Tradition N ow that the excavations at Cnossus, Phaestus, Hagia Triada, and other places in Crete have given us certain definite facts about the earliest Cretan civilization, it is perhaps worth While to examine again the mass of traditions and myths clustering about the island. What information concerning the early state of Crete did the later Greeks possess, how does this square with the archaeological evidence, does it help us to explain any of the results of the excavations? These are the questions which must be kept in mind While going over the traditions. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Sea-Kings of Crete I have to acknowledge extensive obligations to the writings and reports of the various investigators who have accomplished so wonderful a resurrection of this ancient world. My debt to the works of Dr. A. J. Evans will be manifest to all who have any acquaintance with the subject; but to such authors as Mrs. H. B. Hawes, Dr. Mackenzie, Pro fessors Burrows, Murray, and Browne, and Messrs. D. G. Hogarth and H. R. Hall, to name only a few among many, my obligations are only less than to the acknowledged chief of Cretan explorers.
