Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Short History of the American Negro It is perhaps only when one enters upon such a study as this that he realizes how valuable are the investiga tions of Dr. W. E. B. Dubois in this field. For the earlier years the thesis, The Suppression of the African slave-trade, is really indispensable; and one of the chapters is largely based on the Atlanta Univer sity publication, The Negro Church. In a similar way is another chapter based upon the valuable study by Dr. R. R. Wright, In, entitled self-help in Negro Education. The last chapter is naturally much indebted to my own publication, The Negro in Literature and Art. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the American Negro, Vol. 2: Georgia Edition, 1920 Volume 11 of the History of the American Negro Georgia Edition, is being issued three years after the publication of Volume 1. Georgia having the largest Negro population of any State in the Union, it was found that the story of her leaders could not adequately be told in a single volume. This second volume is merely a continuation of the first. The publishers are grateful for the hearty co-operation of the most intelligent men and women of the race, but realize that even vet there are many successful men and women the story of Whose lives might profit ably be recorded. Some of these have been approached, but have not seen their way clear to furnish the information nec essary for the preparation of an adequate biography. It does not include all the Negro men and women of importance in the Old North State, but it does include many of the greatest and best. As men come and go, rise and fall, it is not possible to make a work dealing with contemporary men exhaustive. We have sought to make it representative. Accordingly, biographies of men and women from every honorable profession and line of work will be found in its pages. Every part of the State is represented. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Historical Romance of the American Negro For a number of years it has been on my mind to write a book regarding the principal events that have occurred to the colored race since the beginning of the agitation against slavery, going on from thence to the great Rebellion, passing through that war, and also dealing with all subjects of great importance that have arrested our attention under our glorious freedom. At the same time it has occurred to me, as it has to many another writer, that my book would be far more interesting to the general reader, if I were to select a representative woman of our own race, and make her the mouthpiece of all I wished to say; in other words, to introduce the whole under the pleasing form of an historical romance, so that we might keep our heroine constantly before our eyes, and make her weave in a continuous tale of love, travel, war and peace, and thus portray the lady playing her own parts on that tremendous stage of Time that has been set forth for the gaze and astonishment of the whole country during the past fifty years. I hope those members of the general public who favor me by a perusal of my book will be pleased with my plan. "Peace hath her victories, no less renowned than war," and I have introduced into my book all the great advances that our race has made since the fall of Richmond, and, indeed, have brought things down to this year. The reader will find a number of things that are intended to introduce humor, and to brighten the darker portions of the story. And as some fault-finding person may say that I have overdrawn my heroine, and made her far more clever than she could ever have naturally been, I venture to affirm that such a charge can by no means be just, for we have women among us, and men, too, who are as intelligent and clever as can be found among any other race on the face of the earth. I believe my book will prove the truth of this assertion in those cases, at least, where the heroines and heroes of the colored race are mentioned in its pages by name. Beulah Jackson will therefore stand as a representative woman among our own people. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Negro: His Past and Future After the preliminary meeting of the Tri-State Medical Society at Virginia Beach, Dr. P.I!. Barringer, of the University of Virginia, was requested by the acting secretary to prepare for the organization meeting of this Society to be held at Charlotte, X.C, a short talk on the raison d'etre for a new medical society in the South. In this address Dr. Barringer took the position that if this was to be conducted as other societies, there was no need for a new society, as there were sixieties in abundance already in existence which devoted themselves to the general needs of the profession, and that if another society was organized it. should be based upon new lines. He suggested that the entire first lav of each meeting of this new society should be devoted to some subject of broad general interest to the profession, such as the negro problem now facing the South, race mortality, inebriety, etc. This suggestion was well received and the negro problem was chosen as the subject for discussion at the next meeting at Charleston, S. C, and Dr. Barringer appointed leader of debate with the request that, he bring in a paper on the influence of heredity upon the negro. Many papers on the negro were read at this Charleston meeting and the subject freely discussed. By the unanimous vote of the Society it was ordered that the papers of Dr. P.B. Barringer and Dr.S. C.Baker should be printed and sent to all the medical societies in the South with the recommendation that they seriously consider the facts therein set forth. Paulus A. Irving, Secretary Tri-State Medical Society. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. In collating the facts herein set forth it was my privilege to consult the Congressional Library at the libraries of Harvard and Yale universities and the Boston Public Library. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the American Negro, Vol. 6 This collection of biographies of prominent Negro men and women of Washington, D. C. Is Volume VI of the Biographical History of the American Negro. It does not pretend to include all the important men and women of the race in the Capital City, but it does include many of the noblest and best. Others equally prominent and useful, misunderstanding or disapprov ing of the work, have either ignored the request for data or flatly refused to furnish same. A book dealing with contemporary men and women can never be made quite complete or exhaustive, for, even while it is being made, some will move or pass away, while others will rise to take their places. We have sought to make the work, at least, representative, dealing with leaders in the edu cational, religious, professional and business life of the City. The Editor, who is also the Publisher, is grateful for the cordial spirit of co-operation shown by manv of those who were personally interviewed. The writer hopes sometime to bring out a book dealing with types of Washington Negroes (some unknown elsewhere in America), in which it will be proper 10 set down many interesting things which do not belong in a biographical work. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Negro in American History: Men and Women Eminent in the Evolution of the American of African Descent It is not my purpose to write a history of the United States nor of any period of that history. The Negro is so interwoven with the growth and development of the American Nation that a history of him as an important element, during little more than a century of which he has been a factor, becomes a task of peculiar difficulty. In the few pages that follow, mine is a much more simple and humble task - to indicate some of the more important points of the contact of the Nation and the Negro; to tell how the former in its evolution has been affected by the presence and the status of the latter; and to trace the transformation of the bondman and savage stolen from Africa to his freedom and citizenship in the United States, and to his recognition as such in the fundamental law, and by an increasing public sentiment of the country. The rise to eminence of representative men and women in both Church and State, as educators, statesmen, artists, and men of aft airs, will be cited for the emulation of our youth who are so liable from the scant mention of such men and women in the histories which they study and the books they read, to conclude that only the lowest and most menial avenues of service are open to them. Well nigh ten years ago Mrs. Charles Bartlett Dykes, formerly of the Leland-Stanford, Jr., University, while an instructor in a Summer School at the Hampton N. & A. Institute, gave this result of studies made with six hundred colored pupils in certain near-by primary schools.
