This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Guilford, Connecticut Among the manuscripts left by the late Ralph D. Smith Esq., who had devoted his leisure hours during the last forty years of his life to the study of historical and genealogical subjects, was found an outline sketch of the history of Guilford, written some thirty years ago and doubtless laid aside with the hope of resuming his labors upon it when more abundant materials should have been collected for the purpose. The history of the early settlers of the town was a favorite subject of study. Although not a native, he showed an attachment to it fully equal to that ever shown by any one to the place of his birth. He was thoroughly acquainted with its records and keenly alive to everything that would add to its reputation. Had this historical sketch been filled up and completed by his own hands, it would have undoubtedly compared favorably, in accuracy and completeness, with the history of any town heretofore written. Still it seemed proper to save what he had prepared, even in its incomplete form, as something of great value to the student of local history, and as a foundation upon which future laborers might build a more complete and exhaustive history. Book Synopsis A History of Christianity in Indonesia by : Jan Sihar Aritonang
Download or read book A History of Christianity in Indonesia written by Jan Sihar Aritonang and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2008 with total page 1021 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Indonesia is the home of the largest single Muslim community of the world. Its Christian community, about 10% of the population, has until now received no overall description in English. Through cooperation of 26 Indonesian and European scholars, Protestants and Catholics, a broad and balanced picture is given of its 24 million Christians. This book sketches the growth of Christianity during the Portuguese period (1511-1605), it presents a fair account of developments under the Dutch colonial administration (1605-1942) and is more elaborate for the period of the Indonesian Republic (since 1945). It emphasizes the regional differences in this huge country, because most Christians live outside the main island of Java. Muslim-Christian relations, as well as the tensions between foreign missionaries and local theology, receive special attention.

Childs ; Cincinnati : Richey & Carroll. This book was released on 1864 with total page 842 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rev. B.F. Morris's magnum opus, the Christian Life and Character of the Civil Institutions of the United States, published in 1864, is nearly impossible to find. The debate over America's Christian heritage ends with this book. Morris leaves no historical document unturned in discovering America's rich Christian heritage, and he accomplished all of his detailed research 140 years ago before there were computers! No other work compares to it. We've never seen an original copy of this massive work. A few years ago, a well-known conservative publishing company considered printing the imposing book. For undisclosed reasons, the publisher declined. Two factors probably contributed to the decision: the overtly Christian character of the material and the exorbitant cost that would go into its production. American Vision is the exclusive distributor of an expertly scanned copy all 831 pages and 26 chapters of Christian Life and Character of the Civil Institutions of the United States. The format is PDF. If you like, the book can be printed in its entirety or one page at a time. The choice is yours.

Book Synopsis A Vietnamese Moses by : George E. Dutton

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A free ebook version of this title is available through Luminos, University of California Press’s Open Access publishing program. Visit www.luminosoa.org to learn more. A Vietnamese Moses is the story of Philiphê Binh, a Vietnamese Catholic priest who in 1796 traveled from Tonkin to the Portuguese court in Lisbon to persuade its ruler to appoint a bishop for his community of ex-Jesuits. Based on Binh’s surviving writings from his thirty-seven-year exile in Portugal, this book examines how the intersections of global and local Roman Catholic geographies shaped the lives of Vietnamese Christians in the early modern era. The book also argues that Binh’s mission to Portugal and his intense lobbying on behalf of his community reflected the agency of Vietnamese Catholics, who vigorously engaged with church politics in defense of their distinctive Portuguese-Catholic heritage. George E. Dutton demonstrates the ways in which Catholic beliefs, histories, and genealogies transformed how Vietnamese thought about themselves and their place in the world. This sophisticated exploration of Vietnamese engagement with both the Catholic Church and Napoleonic Europe provides a unique perspective on the complex history of early Vietnamese Christianity.

Book Synopsis Political Sermons of the American Founding Era, 1730-1805 by : Ellis Sandoz
Download or read book Political Sermons of the American Founding Era, 1730-1805 written by Ellis Sandoz and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The early political culture of the American republic was deeply influenced by the religious consciousness of the New England preachers. Indeed, it was often through the political sermon—the "pulpit of the American Revolution"—that the political rhetoric of the period was formed, refined, and transmitted. And yet the centrality of religious concerns in the lives of eighteenth-century Americans is largely neglected. This has created a blind spot regarding the fundamental acts of the American founding. Political sermons such as the fifty-five collected in this volume are unique to America, both in kind and in significance. This volume thus fills an important need if the American founding period is to be adequately understood.
