In the first paper (Chapter \ref{ch2}), I obtain informative bounds on network statistics in a partially observed network whose formation I explicitly model. Partially observed networks are commonplace due to, for example, partial sampling or incomplete responses in surveys. Network statistics (e.g., centrality measures) are not point identified when the network is partially observed. Worst-case bounds on network statistics can be obtained by letting all missing links take values zero and one. I dramatically improve on the worst-case bounds by specifying a structural model for network formation. An important feature of the model is that I allow for positive externalities in the network-formation process. The network-formation model and network statistics are set identified due to multiplicity of equilibria. I provide a computationally tractable outer approximation of the joint identified region for preferences determining network-formation processes and network statistics. In a simulation study on Katz-Bonacich centrality, I find that worst-case bounds that do not use the network formation model are $44$ times wider than the bounds I obtain from my procedure. The second paper (Chapter \ref{ch3}) is concerned about learning decision makers' (DMs) preferences using data on observed choices from a finite set of risky alternatives with monetary outcomes. This chapter is coauthored with Levon Barseghyan and Francesca Molinari. We propose a discrete choice model with unobserved heterogeneity in consideration sets (the collection of alternatives considered by DMs) and unobserved heterogeneity in standard risk aversion. In this framework, stochastic choice is driven both by different rankings of alternatives induced by unobserved heterogeneity in risk preferences and by different sets of alternatives considered. We obtain sufficient conditions for semi-nonparametric point identification of both the distribution of unobserved heterogeneity in preferences and the distribution of consideration sets. Our method yields an estimator that is easy to compute and that can be used in markets with a large number of alternatives. We apply our method to a dataset on property insurance purchases. We find that although households are on average strongly risk averse, they consider lower coverages more frequently than higher coverages. Finally, we estimate the monetary losses associated with limited consideration in our application.

The model allows for assortative matching on observables (homophily) as well as unobserved agent level heterogeneity in link surplus (degree heterogeneity). The joint distribution of observed and unobserved agent-level characteristics is left unrestricted. Inferences about homophily do not depend upon untestable assumptions about this distribution. The model is non-standard since the dimension of the heterogeneity parameter grows with the number of agents, and hence network size. Nevertheless, under certain conditions, a joint maximum likelihood (ML) procedure, which simultaneously estimates the common and agent-level parameters governing link formation, is consistent. Although the asymptotic sampling distribution of the common parameter is Normal, it (i) contains a bias term and (ii) its variance does not coincide with the inverse of Fisher's information matrix. Standard ML asymptotic inference procedures are invalid. Forming confidence intervals with a bias-corrected maximum likelihood estimate, and appropriate standard error estimates, results in correct coverage. I assess the value of these results for understanding finite sample behavior via a set of Monte Carlo experiments and through an empirical analysis of risk-sharing links in a rural Tanzanian village (cf., De Weerdt, 2004).

In Chapter 1, I propose a semi-nonparametric panel data model with a latent group structure. I assume that individual parameters are heterogeneous across groups but homogeneous within a group while the group membership is unknown. I first approximate the infinite-dimensional function with a sieve expansion; then, I propose a Classifier-Lasso(C-Lasso) procedure to simultaneously identify the individuals' membership and estimate the group-specific parameters. I show that: (i) the classification exhibits uniform consistency; (ii) C-Lasso and post-Lasso estimators achieve oracle properties so that they are asymptotically equivalent to infeasible estimators as if the group membership is known; and (iii) the estimators are consistent and asymptotically normally distributed. Simulations demonstrate an excellent finite sample performance of this approach in both classification and estimation. In Chapter 2 (joint with Wenyu Zhou), we study a nonparametric additive panel regression model with grouped heterogeneity. The model can be regarded as a natural extension to the heterogeneous panel model studied in Su, Shi, and Phillips (2016). We propose to estimate the nonparametric components using a sieve-approximation-based Classifier-Lasso method. We establish the asymptotic properties of the estimator and show that they enjoy the so-called oracle property. In addition, we present the decision rule for group classification and establish its consistency. Then, a BIC-type information criterion is developed to determine the group pattern of each nonparametric component. We further investigate the finite sample performance of the estimation method and the information criterion through Monte Carlo simulations. Results show that both work well. Finally, we apply the model and the estimation method to study the demand for cigarettes in the United States using panel data of 46 states from 1963 to 1992. In Chapter 3, I study a network sample selection model in which 1) bilateral fixed effects enter the pairwise outcome equation additively; 2) link formation depends on latent variables from both sides nonparametrically. I first propose a four-cycle structure to difference out the fixed effects; next, utilizing the idea proposed in Auerbach (2019), I manage to use the kernel function to control for the selection bias. I then introduce estimators for the parameters of interest and characterize their asymptotic properties.

Agents' preferences over the form of the network consist of an arbitrary network benefit function (e.g., agents may have preferences over their network centrality) and a private component which is additively separable in own links. This latter component allows for unobserved heterogeneity in the costs of sending and receiving links across agents (respectively out- and in- degree heterogeneity) as well as homophily/heterophily across the K types of agents. In contrast, the network benefit function allows agents' preferences over links to vary with the presence or absence of links elsewhere in the network (and hence with the link formation behavior of their peers). In the null model which excludes the network benefit function, links form in-dependently across dyads in the manner described by Charbonneau (2017). Under the alternative there is interdependence across linking decisions (i.e., strategic interaction). We show how to test the null with power optimized in specific directions. These alternative directions include many common models of strategic network formation (e.g., "connections" models, "structural hole" models etc.). Our random utility specification induces an exponential family structure under the null which we exploit to construct a similar test which exactly controls size (despite the the null being a composite one with many nuisance parameters). We further show how to construct locally best tests for specific alternatives without making any assumptions about equilibrium selection. To make our tests feasible we introduce a new MCMC algorithm for simulating the null distributions of our test statistics.

Pairwise stability of a network gives strong identification power when I consider the probability that the observed network is pairwise stable. I propose a semiparametric maximum score estimator which is simple and computationally feasible. I apply the empirical model to social and economic networks in rural India, and find homophily patterns in village networks. Second, I propose a structural model of multigraph formation, where 1) individuals determine multiple types of links simultaneously; 2) all networks interact with each other; and 3) one or more networks are endogenous but not simultaneous. I extend the notion of pairwise stability to a multigraph, and show that the structural model is equivalent to a multinomial choice model. The presence of endogenous but not simultaneous networks is a source of an incomplete econometric model. Relying on partially identified econometric models, I characterize the sharp identification region of parameters by a finite set of moment inequalities. I apply the model to village networks and find that friendship affects risk sharing and favor exchange networks in the same direction. The last chapter studies an empirical model of network formation in the U.S. airline industry and investigates the size of network externalities. I assume that each airline builds a network that satisfies a weak notion of stability. That is, no airlines want to deviate from their current networks by a single route change. In this framework, I can use an entry game to investigate the airline industry and include network measures in the profit function to estimate network externalities. I find that when I control for the number of one-stop flights the effect of hub-size is larger than the case without considering one-stop flights.

Book excerpt: In the benchmark model of Bala and Goyal (2000) on network formation, the equilibrium network is asymmetric and unfair as agents have different payoffs. While they are prominent in reality, asymmetric networks do not emerge in the lab mainly because of fairness concerns. We extend this model with a sequential linking decision process to ease coordination and with heterogeneous agents. Heterogeneity is introduced with the presence of a special agent who has either a higher monetary value or a different status. The equilibrium is asymmetric and unfair. Our experimental results show that thanks to sequentiality and fairness concerns, individuals coordinate on fair and efficient networks in homogeneous settings. Heterogeneity impacts the network formation process by increasing the asymmetry of networks but does not decrease the level of fairness nor efficiency.
