Book excerpt: Virginia Woolf's playful exploration of a satirical »Oxbridge« became one of the world's most groundbreaking writings on women, writing, fiction, and gender. A Room of One's Own [1929] can be read as one or as six different essays, narrated from an intimate first-person perspective. Actual history blends with narrative and memoir. But perhaps most revolutionary was its address: the book is written by a woman for women. Male readers are compelled to read through women's eyes in a total inversion of the traditional male gaze. VIRGINIA WOOLF [1882–1941] was an English author. With novels like Jacob’s Room [1922], Mrs Dalloway [1925], To the Lighthouse [1927], and Orlando [1928], she became a leading figure of modernism and is considered one of the most important English-language authors of the 20th century. As a thinker, with essays like A Room of One’s Own [1929], Woolf has influenced the women’s movement in many countries.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract This text examines how worldviews are conceptualised, investigated and understood, and what relevance these insights have for education. The research focus is structured in three parts. First, an overview of the origin, application and evolution of the meaning of the concept of worldview is given. This part shows the philosophical origin of the concept and serves as a fundamental understanding. Building on this, a clear definition of the concept of worldview is formulated. Second, a classification of worldview models is presented, and current philosophical worldview models are presented and compared. The aim is to come to an understanding of the application of the concept of worldview and to gain an insight into the analysis of worldviews through the use of current philosophical worldview models. In the last part, three different teaching approaches in dealing with students' worldviews are presented, and dangers, possibilities and practical examples are shown. Introduction Worldview is a concept that has been portrayed in various ways. It has been studied in different research areas, using a plethora of definitions and applying the concept to various approaches in a seemingly arbitrary way. This has led to a muddled understanding of what a worldview is and how it functions. Naming the Elephant: Worldview as a Concept, the title of the book written by James W. Sire (2014), suggests that worldview can be conceptualised in a coherent way. What is more, Sire uses the analogy of the English metaphorical idiom, "the elephant in the room", to hint at the importance of addressing worldview as a concept. This understanding will be echoed in this text with the aim of providing a conceptual clarification of worldview and applying it to the specific context of ethics education. The importance of the study of worldview can be further emphasised with the statement made by Rousseau and Billingham (2018, 3): "The general significance of worldviews lies in this: everyone has one, and it constitutes a set of beliefs that guides their judgment making and action taking in all spheres of activity." Consequently, the elephant is not only in the room, but active in everyone and worth investigating.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The main theme of this book is that, within contemporary capitalist societies a materialist outlook informed by science has triumphed creating the lack of a spiritual dimension to give meaning and purpose to the activities that are necessary for a capitalist society to function effectively. Capitalist societies are in trouble and need to be restructured to provide for the material needs of all the people who work within the system, not just the one percent, but because of the lack of a spiritual connection with each other and with nature this is not likely to happen. It has been said that society and the organizations within treat one another as objects to be manipulated in the interests of promoting economic growth and treat nature as an object to be exploited for the same purpose. This way of treating each other, and nature, is consistent with the way a capitalist system has worked in the past and was supposed to enable it to function efficiently to provide a fulfilling and enriched life for all its adherents through growth of the economy. However, as capitalist societies have become dysfunctional they will need a different kind of orientation to continue in existence. Restructuring Capitalism: Materialism and Spiritualism in Business argues that what is needed is a new sense of a spiritualization of the self and its relation to others and to the establishment of a spiritual connection with nature in order for capitalism to be restructured to work for everyone and for the society as a whole.
