Book Synopsis The Oxford History of Classical Reception in English Literature by : David Hopkins
Download or read book The Oxford History of Classical Reception in English Literature written by David Hopkins and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 761 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Oxford History of Classical Reception (OHCREL) is designed to offer a comprehensive investigation of the numerous and diverse ways in which literary texts of the classical world have stimulated responses and refashioning by English writers. Covering the full range of English literature from the early Middle Ages to the present day, OHCREL both synthesizes existing scholarship and presents cutting-edge new research, employing an international team of expert contributors for each of the five volumes. OHCREL endeavours to interrogate, rather than inertly reiterate, conventional assumptions about literary 'periods', the processes of canon-formation, and the relations between literary and non-literary discourse. It conceives of 'reception' as a complex process of dialogic exchange and, rather than offering large cultural generalizations, it engages in close critical analysis of literary texts. It explores in detail the ways in which English writers' engagement with classical literature casts as much light on the classical originals as it does on the English writers' own cultural context. This fourth volume, and second to appear in the series, covers the years 1790-1880 and explores romantic and Victorian receptions of the classics. Noting the changing fortunes of particular classical authors and the influence of developments in archaeology, aesthetics and education, it traces the interplay between classical and nineteenth-century perceptions of gender, class, religion, and the politics of republic and empire in chapters engaging with many of the major writers of this period.
Download or read book Knowing the Past written by Suzy Anger and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2018-08-06 with total page 293 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To what extent is it possible to know the past or to know other cultures? Can one describe the past without imposing one's own cultural, political, social, or personal preconceptions? Testing the current skepticism that insists that it is impossible not to read one's own moment onto other times and cultures, the essays in this collection use the Victorian era as a means of developing a theory and critique of historical reclamation. In Knowing the Past, a distinguished group of Victorian scholars reflect on the Victorian past and examine the Victorians' own sophisticated contributions to debates about historical and cultural knowledge. Confronting, confirming, and opposing the skeptics, the essays provide close readings of particular texts. They encompass the larger constellation of ideas and questions that went into the making of the texts while participating in larger theoretical debates about knowledge of the past and other cultures.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Matthew Arnold -- was he a powerful and poetic spokesman, sensitive to the first troubled stirrings of a new society, or was he a weak versifier and a self-contradictory critic with his face turned to the past? David DeLaura provides in this new volume a collection of modern critical commentary which establishes Arnold once and for all as an essential poet. Distinguished contributors to this volume offer the reader evaluations of Arnold's literary theory as well as analyses of his artistry in prose and poetry. The essays DeLaura presents stress the centrality of religious concerns in Arnold's work, and suggest the intellectual scope, complexity, and adequacy of his achievement. -- From publisher's description.
