Book excerpt: "The four novels in this volume, together, span the entire period of Raj Literature, offering a vivid portrait of colonial India from the time of Kipling to Indian Independence. They trace the changing relationship between the rulers and the ruled from the heyday of the Empire to its demise in 1947, and add to our understanding of the British and their predicament in India." "All novels have been out of print for several years and almost impossible to procure. The decision to revive these is based largely on the continued fascination with Anglo-Indian writing and its growing importance in critical postcolonial discourses." "Prepared with the general reader in mind, this anthology should also fascinate students of English literature and all those interested in colonial history and constructions of race and gender."--BOOK JACKET.

Book excerpt: Goodbye to Elsa is a richly entertaining satirical novel. It is at the same time an acute study of the loneliness of the individual trying to relate himself to his fellow men. Tristan, who tells his own story, is an Assistant Professor of History. Having gone blind in one eye, he leaves his wife, Elsa, and his son, both of whom he detests, and hides in a deserted farm-house with the intention of killing himself. Here he recalls his life, particularly his love life in India, England and Canada — a series of disappointments and persecutions. While meticulously preparing to put an end to his sufferings he meets Marie, the daughter of a grocer, who offers him love and understanding and encourages him to face life. Tristan responds to the challenge, but his response, like much else of what he does, is distorted by his conviction that he has a Messianic role to play . . . and the outcome is very different from anything he had envisaged. REVIEWS "Funny, full of bite" — The Times (London) “Cowasjee knows how to tell a story and handles his language admirably.” — Khushwant Singh “Entirely original and elegantly written. Goodbye to Elsa is a deadly serious comedy... In many ways this brilliant novel is a hymn to women, in others a funny and sophisticated revelation of British Empire man.” — The Listener (London)

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first analysis of the dynamics of British press reporting of India and the attempts made by the British Government to manipulate press coverage as part of a strategy of imperial control. The press was an important forum for debate over the future of India and was used by significant groups within the political elite to advance their agendas. Focuses on a period which represented a critical transitional phase in the history of the Raj, witnessing the impact of the First World War, major constitutional reform initiatives, the tragedy of the Amritsar massacre, and the launching of Gandhi’s mass movement. Asserts that the War was a watershed in official media manipulation and in the aftermath of the conflict the Government’s previously informal and ad hoc attempts to shape press reporting were placed on a more formal basis.

Book excerpt: This book, first published in 1973, gives a vivid picture of British-Indian social life from the eighteenth century to Independence, as well as of the houses themselves. The Government Houses were not only buildings on a palatial scale, but were also a background to a way of life that was as full of contrasts as the Raj itself. The author peoples the houses with some of the men and women who lived in them during the course of their history, and in doing so provides a chapter of social history which has not been written before.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written in a storytelling style the novel Raja, Jungle and Black Moon is the translation of one of the well-known novels of Hindi Raja, Jungle aur Kala Chand. The tale of Bastar is an old story that starts from the 13th century. The Raja who reached Bastar the most secluded jungle which was the abode of primitive tribes of our time, had to become king of this area which even didn’t have the word ‘king’ in the local dialect. The endless desires and greed for power and wealth were destined to a dramatic end for the small princely kingdom of Bastar. It was the threshold for the beginning of a new era of uprising of the people of Bastar against British rule, against injustice and for the acceptance of their King or Raja as the ruler of Bastar. Rendered in English by well-known translator Naresh ‘Nadeem’ the novel is a long saga of many small intertwined interesting stories of Bastar. With affluent small sentences with a flair of pure storytelling style, the novel presents the sufferings, pain, simplicity and happenings in the world of tribes of Bastar to make their life, values and way of living understandable for a common reader.

Michael makes a decision that changes the course of his life and restores his faith in love. But fate takes another drastic turn threatening to destroy him once again. Will Michael find his happiness or will he face his worst tragedy yet?

Book excerpt: During the century of British rule of the Indian subcontinent known as the British Raj, the rulers felt the significant influence of their exotic subjects. Resonances of the Raj examines the ramifications of the intertwined and overlapping histories of Britain and India on English music in the last fifty years of the colonial encounter, and traces the effects of the Raj on the English musical imagination. Conventional narratives depict a one-way influence of Britain on India, with the 'discovery' of Indian classical music occurring only in the post-colonial era. Drawing on new archival sources and approaches in cultural studies, author Nalini Ghuman shows that on the contrary, England was both deeply aware of and heavily influenced by India musically during the Indian-British colonial encounter. Case studies of representative figures, including composers Edward Elgar and Gustav Holst, and Maud MacCarthy, an ethnomusicologist and performer of the era, integrate music directly into the cultural history of the British Raj. Ghuman thus reveals unexpected minglings of peoples, musics and ideas that raise questions about 'Englishness', the nature of Empire, and the fixedness of identity. Richly illustrated with analytical music examples and archival photographs and documents, many of which appear here in print for the first time, Resonances of the Raj brings fresh hearings to both familiar and little-known musics of the time, and reveals a rich and complex history of cross-cultural musical imaginings which leads to a reappraisal of the accepted historiographies of both British musical culture and of Indo-Western fusion.
