Book excerpt: This qualitative transcendental phenomenology study explored the lived experiences of foster parents who care for traumatized children. Children in the foster care system are often exposed to trauma before and after entering the foster care system. Therefore, the trauma that foster children experience can impact them emotionally, psychologically, and cognitively. Unfortunately, foster parents are often unequipped to deal with these issues when these children enter their homes. The gap this study aimed to address was that foster parents did not have opportunities to share their experiences on what it was like to provide care for traumatized foster children. Husserl’s phenomenology theory guided this exploration and provided an in-depth, comprehensive description of foster parents’ experience in the foster care system. The study’s design and framework were used to address the research question, how does a foster parent describe their experience of providing care for children who have experienced trauma? In the rural region of Atlanta, Georgia, seven foster parents participated in semi-structured face-to-face interviews. The data were analyzed and coded. Four themes emerged: challenges in being a foster parent, the impact of fostering traumatized children, factors contributing to foster parents’ resilience, and recommendations for supporting foster parents. The themes provided insight into what it was like to provide care for foster children in the foster care system and shed light on foster parents’ challenges and needs in caring for traumatized children. The themes revealed that caring for traumatized children can be stressful. The foster parents did not receive sufficient communication about the children’s trauma background or training in managing the children’s trauma. Training and workshops were recommended because the foster parent can experience burnout without developing resiliency and support.

Book excerpt: This qualitative study examined the lived experiences of foster parents to understand how they make meaning of their child's behavior and their training needs. A survey posted to online foster parent support communities gathered information about foster parents' level of parental reflective functioning, perceptions of training experiences, and reflections on their parenting experience. Responses from 13 participants were collected and analyzed. Quantitative data gathered was used to characterize the sample of participants. Using thematic analysis, nine themes were rendered. Participants identified positive and negative aspects of their parenting experience, reported strong feelings of love, highlighted the impact of trauma on their child, described struggling with interpreting and responding to their child's difficult behavior, and struggled with navigating emotional responses. Participants reported being dissatisfied with their previous training experiences, found trauma focused training the most helpful, and disclosed a desire for more training on practical techniques. Implications for clinical treatment and foster parenting training are discussed.

Many of these children enter care after experiencing some sort of physical or emotional trauma. This trauma has a potentially damaging impact on the educational achievement of this scarred population. The data show that these children are at high risk for poor educational achievement. With the help of caring adults, these children can overcome barriers and achieve academic success. The purpose of this phenomenological qualitative study was to explore the educational experience of students in foster care through the perspective and expectations of multiple stakeholders and to investigate the role that stakeholders play in the educational achievement of foster children. This qualitative study gained insight into the perspective that stakeholders have of the educational experience of foster children. In addition, this study investigated the expectations that stakeholders have of the educational achievement of foster children. Adult stakeholders0́4including foster parents, caseworkers, and school officials0́4are important for children in foster care as they serve as advocates and as a source of consistent educational support. The participants in the study included three certified foster parents, three caseworkers and four school officials who have all had contact with school-age foster children. Through the use of open-ended interview questions, the researcher gained insight into the perspective that stakeholders have of the educational experiences of foster children in their care, as well as the expectations they have for the academic achievement of the foster child. The study identified seven themes0́4including trauma, relationships, impactful people, established habits, communication, realistic expectations, and motivation0́4that stakeholders believe contribute to the academic successes and failures of children in foster care. The theoretical framework selected to better understand the stakeholders' perceptions and expectations of the achievement of foster children, and their role in impacting foster children's educational experiences, was Bronfenbrenner's Ecological Model (1979). Limitations, recommendations for future studies, and implications for practice were also discussed.

Book excerpt: A group home is a home for children who have experienced various types of abuse and/or neglect by a parent/guardian and are for some reason unable to be maintained in typical foster care placements. Group home life is complex and vastly understudied. This qualitative study interviewed six female residents and four staff at a local group home to investigate the informal structures, social orders and overall perception of group home life. Multiple parallels were found between the experiences of the group home residents and those of prison inmates, reinforcing that group homes operate in many ways as "total institutions" and residents are often learning unhealthy behaviors from their peers. Recommendations for a more effective group home program arose from the research and are centered on making the group home environment feel more like "real life." Residents need a sense of family, support, caring, and trust which is difficult to create with staff members who by necessity must enforce professional boundaries. Some possible steps to address this seeming dilemma are proposed.

This study examined the views and experiences of foster parents who care for children in foster care with behavior problems, explored foster parents' relations with biological parents and child welfare services, and explored foster parents' view of mental health professionals who work with children with behavior problems. Using a qualitative research methodology, the researcher conducted face-to-face interviews with 14 foster parents from one foster family agency in the Los Angeles County. Findings revealed that many times it is difficult for foster parents to know how to care for children with challenging behavior problems. This study also revealed that the majority of foster parents have positive relations with child welfare workers and challenging relationships with children's biological parents. Lastly, this study revealed that foster parents have a difficult time understanding the therapeutic process of mental health professionals who provide services to the children. These results can help social workers and policy makers in providing support and implement better training to foster parents in order to reduce multiple placements of children in foster care.
