Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The emergence of special education in Brazil in the 19th century was marked by discrete initiatives to educate individuals with disabilities who lived in residential institutions and hospitals (Mendes, 2008). Since then, educators and psychologists in Brazil and around the world have responded to new laws and policies that promote educational equity and inclusion of all children in schools leading to adaptations in their approach to supporting individuals with disabilities. Despite efforts to implement inclusive educational practices in schools, Brazilian research on special education and school psychology continues to report the challenges faced by educators in promoting these practices in daily activities. To date, little attention has been given to strategies and procedures used to achieve inclusion and overcome the barriers faced by educators within the Brazilian context from a school systems perspective. The purpose of this study was to understand what systems and strategies are used in Brazilian schools to promote inclusion and meet the needs of students in general and special education in an equitable way. Additionally, the researcher sought to examine ways to overcome barriers identified to inform future practice.
