Book excerpt: An evaluation of a needs assessment for children's medical devices was conducted in the spring of 2011. An innovative new research process involving UW-Stout's Industrial Design Students and DesignWise Medical aimed towards developing new pediatric medical devices. The research process was a new process and needed an evaluation on the process and the outcome. The data was used to better the research process for future student projects. An evaluation was conducted simultaneously with the new process. Quantitative and qualitative data was collected for a mixed method approach. The evaluation involved different populations consisting of students and professionals from the medical and industrial design field. Data collection came from numerous surveys and interviews. Overall, there were many suggestions for improvement as well as some validation of the current processes taken in this new research approach. The Process Evaluation showed there were many areas to improve upon such as group size, parent involvement, compliance obstacles and involving professional staff earlier in the process while the Outcomes Evaluation indicated there was not a lot of thought behind their product to make it a successful for mass production.

Book excerpt: The original edition of this text, Clinical Evaluation of Medical Devices: Principles and Case Studies, provided the first overview of key pr- ciples and approaches to medical device clinical trials, illustrated with a series of detailed, real-world case studies. The book is designed as a resource for clinical professionals and regulatory specialists working in the field of new medical device development and marketing. Since the first edition of this text was published in 1997, the rapid pace of inno- tion in health care technologies continues to yield exciting and important new products. The regulatory landscape has also evolved, reflecting some of the changes and needs within the medical device industry. The purpose of Clinical Evaluation of Medical Devices: Principles and Case Studies, Second Edition is to provide an updated and expanded presentation of the scientific methods and regulatory requirements applied to the study of new significant risk medical devices. The text now includes (1) new information on the requirements and process for gaining reimbursement of new products from Medicare and private insurers, with case studies of research specifically designed for this p- pose as well as health care technology assessment methods; (2) infor- tion on new statistical methodologies applied to medical device trials; and (3) all new case studies, including examples of combination pr- ucts, three-phase development models (i. e. , feasibility, FDA approval, Medicare reimbursement), and novel study designs.

Book excerpt: WHO and partners have been working towards devising an agenda, an action plan, tools and guidelines to increase access to appropriate medical devices. This document is part of a series of reference documents being developed for use at the country level. The series will include the following subject areas: * policy framework for health technology * medical device regulations * health technology assessment * health technology management * needs assessment of medical devices * medical device procurement * medical equipment donations * medical equipment inventory management * medical equipment maintenance * computerized maintenance management systems * medical device data * medical device nomenclature * medical devices by health-care setting * medical devices by clinical procedures * medical device innovation, research and development. These documents are intended for use by biomedical engineers, health managers, donors, nongovernmental organizations and academic institutions involved in health technology at the district, national, regional or global levels. Needs assessment is a complex process, incorporating a number of variables, that provides decision-makers with the information necessary to prioritize and select appropriate medical devices at a national, regional or hospital level. This document describes and illustrates the objective, the general approach and the process of such a needs assessment. The main section, Specific Approach (Section 4), demonstrates in seven steps how to identify related needs, consider the requirements of baseline information, analyze the gathered information, appraise the options, and prioritize the specific requirements. Tools are being continuously developed to support this decision-making process, and this document also includes information on useful tools that will help in the execution of these steps.

I particularly liked the tone that it is not an "either or" discussion, but rather an "and" – the two approaches compliment one another." —Evan Abbott, Regis University This book covers the five most common instruments and strategies employed to explore needs. It describes the steps involved in implementing them and presents interesting case illustrations. Although this book can be used in a stand-alone fashion, it is part of the Needs Assessment KIT—five interrelated and sequenced books that take the reader through the needs assessment process (ISBN: 978-0-7619-2595-8).

Book excerpt: Most courses in counseling, social work, therapy, and clinical psychology programs lump clinical work with "children and adolescents" together into a single unit while the social, emotional, physical, and neurobiological development of youth is often only a portion of a development course that covers the entire human lifespan. The consequence is twofold: department chairs, accrediting agencies, administrators, and faculty are tasked with covering too much content in too few course hours; and graduate students and beginning practitioners are woefully unprepared for working with difficult populations, including teenagers and young adults. Evidence-Based Psychotherapy with Adolescents helps new clinicians working in any treatment setting learn how to conduct psychotherapy with adolescents from a place of understanding and empathy. In addition to addressing adolescent development, psychological theories in practice, neurobiology of adolescents, clinical assessment, and evidence-based treatment approaches for a range of common mental health concerns, the text explains how to build therapeutic alliances with adolescent clients and work with vulnerable populations commonly seen in treatment. A complete guide that empowers readers with the insight and tools necessary to support adolescents as they progress towards adulthood, this book effectively builds the core skill sets of students and new clinicians in social work, psychology, psychiatry, and marriage and family therapy.

Book excerpt: "The concept of clinical evaluation and the framework for clinical investigations have been significantly enforced within the new EU-Medical Device Regulation (MDR). This book provides in-depth and practice-oriented guidance on the systematic identification and generation of clinical data through clinical investigations and other relevant sources. It addresses the needs of all stakeholders, be it manufacturers, notified bodies or competent authorities, when they have to plan, perform or assess clinical evaluations and investigations for medical devices on the way to conformity assessment and CE marking. It is a valuable tool of qualification for clinicians and related experts when preparing for a role of a clinical evaluator in the field, either when serving any of the stakeholders or when trying to make their own involvement stand out in start-ups, spin-offs or other development projects or in counselling services." Dr. Tom Melvin, Co-Chair, Clinical Investigation and Evaluation Working Group

Book excerpt: The Social Security Administration (SSA) administers two programs that provide benefits based on disability: the Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) program and the Supplemental Security Income (SSI) program. This report analyzes health care utilizations as they relate to impairment severity and SSA's definition of disability. Health Care Utilization as a Proxy in Disability Determination identifies types of utilizations that might be good proxies for "listing-level" severity; that is, what represents an impairment, or combination of impairments, that are severe enough to prevent a person from doing any gainful activity, regardless of age, education, or work experience.
