Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Asia is now home to some 800 million multilingual speakers of English, more than the total number of native English speakers, and how they use English is continuously evolving and changing to reflect their cultural backgrounds and everyday experiences. Can English, therefore, be considered an Asian language? Drawing upon the Asian Corpus of English, this book will be the first comprehensive account of the roles, uses and features of English in Asia, encompassing several different varieties of Asian English. Chapters cover the distinctive linguistic features of English in different settings, such as in law, religion and popular culture, as well as the use of local rhetorical, pragmatic and cultural styles and its use as a lingua franca among Asian multilinguals. It will also examine the role of English in education - from primary through to higher education - and consider the implications of this for other languages of Asia.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Language Diversity in the Sinophone World offers interdisciplinary insights into social, cultural, and linguistic aspects of multilingualism in the Sinophone world, highlighting language diversity and opening up the burgeoning field of Sinophone studies to new perspectives from sociolinguistics. The book begins by charting historical trajectories in Sinophone multilingualism, beginning with late imperial China through to the emergence of English in the mid-19th century. The volume uses this foundation as a jumping off point from which to provide an in-depth comparison of modern language planning and policies throughout the Sinophone world, with the final section examining multilingual practices not readily captured by planning frameworks and the ideologies, identities, repertoires, and competences intertwined within these different multilingual configurations. Taken together, the collection makes a unique sociolinguistic-focused intervention into emerging research in Sinophone studies and will be of interest to students and scholars within the discipline.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Teaching in Long Underwear: My China, Ernie Danek shares his experiences of living as a foreigner outside of the major cities in China. As an American entering his early years as a senior citizen, he faced the challenges of teaching for a decade in the Middle Kingdom's public university system. During his time there, he developed an oral English teaching plan for freshman English majors. Ernie observed in his day-to-day experiences the numerous differences between Chinese and American cultures. Many stories were told to him by his students of the grotesque follies that resulted from Chairman Mao’s efforts to expel Western and traditional Chinese influences from China during the Cultural Revolution from 1966 to 1976. Ernie’s students insisted on hearing his American viewpoint of China’s successful launch of a manned, orbital spacecraft. His comment, “It's like watching your little brother learn to walk,” produced both titters and scowls. Teaching in Long Underwear: My China provides an honest account of what it is like to teach outside of the major Chinese cities and what it means to live as a foreigner inside an ancient culture.

Book excerpt: A Critique of Translation Theories in Chinese Tradition: From Dao’an to Fu Lei represents an attempt to review traditional Chinese translation theories, covering an intellectual history of about 2,000 years from Eastern Han Dynasty (25-220) in dynastic China up to contemporary China. Following an approach informed by the Western history of philosophy, this two-volume work makes detailed analysis and modern interpretation of ten major theories or theoretical argumentations, from the theory of Dao’an, an early Buddhist sutra translator and theorist, to that of Fu Lei, a contemporary Chinese translator of French literature. Throughout the critique in Volume One, a three-dimensional methodology is adopted in different theoretical contexts, that is, historical evaluation, theoretical explanation, and creative modern transformation of each theory, with regard to its basic propositions, concepts, and categories, from its classical form into a modern form. Presented in Volume Two is what the author has got in his exploration, by drawing on the traditional Chinese culture resources, into the modern Chinese translation theory now still in the making.
