Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Providing a comprehensive introduction to the philosophy of higher education this book steps nimbly through the field, leading it into new areas and advancing an imaginative ecological realism. Each chapter takes the form of a short essay, tackling a particular topic such as values, knowledge, teaching, critical thinking and social justice. It also examines key issues including academic freedom, the digital university and the Anthropocene, and draws on classic as well as contemporary texts in the field. Composed of five parts, the book travels on a compelling journey: Part one identifies foundations of the field, distinguishing between the ideas of university and higher education, Part two examines key concepts, including research, culture, academic freedom and reason, Part three focuses on higher education as a set of educational practices and being a student, Part four is concerned with the university as an institution and includes the matters of leadership and the spirit of the university, Part five turns to the university in the world, and argues for an ecological perspective. Written in a lively and accessible style, and ideal for anyone coming to the field for the first time but also of interest to experienced scholars, this book offers sightings of new possibilities for higher education and the university.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All Thoughts Are Equal is both an introduction to the work of French philosopher François Laruelle and an exercise in nonhuman thinking. For Laruelle, standard forms of philosophy continue to dominate our models of what counts as exemplary thought and knowledge. By contrast, what Laruelle calls his “non-standard” approach attempts to bring democracy into thought, because all forms of thinking—including the nonhuman—are equal. John Ó Maoilearca examines how philosophy might appear when viewed with non-philosophical and nonhuman eyes. He does so by refusing to explain Laruelle through orthodox philosophy, opting instead to follow the structure of a film (Lars von Trier’s documentary The Five Obstructions) as an example of the non-standard method. Von Trier’s film is a meditation on the creative limits set by film, both technologically and aesthetically, and how these limits can push our experience of film—and of ourselves—beyond what is normally deemed “the perfect human.” All Thoughts Are Equal adopts film’s constraints in its own experiment by showing how Laruelle’s radically new style of philosophy is best presented through our most nonhuman form of thought—that found in cinema.

Book excerpt: This work explores the philosophical positions of five postmodern thinkers—Lyotard, Rorty, Schrag, Foucault, and Derrida—to show how their critiques imply that scholars are unduly limited by the belief that inquiry is fundamentally about gaining knowledge of phenomena that are assumed to exist prior to and independent of inquiry, and to persist essentially unchanged by inquiry. The author argues that there are good reasons why this constraint is both unnecessary and undesirable, and he resituates the disciplines within a more flexible foundation that would expand what counts as legitimate inquiry. This foundation would emphasize the inquirer as a cause of reality, not just an observer who aims to accurately describe and explain phenomena. Mourad proposes an intellectual and organizational form which he calls post-disciplinary research programs. These dynamic programs would be composed of scholars from diverse disciplines who collaborate to juxtapose disparate disciplinary concepts in order to create contexts for post-disciplinary inquries.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Higher Education in Minnesota was first published in 1950.As a guidepost of comprehensive information on the status of post high-school education in Minnesota and its likely role in the future, this report provides a basis for constructive thinking by administrators, teachers, legislators, and others concerned with higher education, not only in Minnesota but in other sections of the country.Presented here is a summary of the findings and recommendations of the Minnesota Commission on Higher Education, created by action of the Minnesota State Legislature in 1947 to survey and report on the state's resources in this area of education. The Minnesota Commission has probed and evaluated all of higher education, synthesizing its own and other research into a detailed yet comprehensive picture that suggests necessary next steps.A practical, down-to-earth viewpoint is held throughout, and the recommendations are based on factual research. The colleges are studied in relation to the kinds of work Minnesota people do, their cultural backgrounds, the amount of money they have to spend, their social activities, their grade and high school educations, their responsibilities as citizens. In this way, higher education is considered, not as an abstraction, but as a social force affecting the kinds of people who live in Minnesota. The major divisions of the volume indicate its scope and realistic viewpoint: The Setting of Higher Education in Minnesota, The Student Potential for Higher Education, Junior College Education, Liberal Arts Education, Teacher Education, Education at the University of Minnesota, The Future of Higher Education in Minnesota.Chapters are by 23 different authors representing various types of colleges and agencies involved in the study.

Book excerpt: This volume presents transcripts of seven hearings held in May, 1991, on the reauthorization of the Higher Education Act of 1965. Of the hearings held in the District of Columbia the first focused on the Pell Grant and Stafford Loan programs and featured witnesses from around the country addressing educational finance. The second hearing focused on the process of accreditation, certification and licensing that determines institutional participation in the Federal student aid programs and featured witnesses from educational institutions, and professional associations. The final hearing presented the testimony of college executives, representatives of educational associations and others on Title VI (which supports international education) and Title III (concerned with institutional aid and funding for institutional facilities). The hearings in other cities provided an opportunity for legislators to hear additional suggestions and recommendations from students, teachers, administrators, institutional executives and state agencies on the reauthorization of higher education programs. Included are the prepared statements of the witnesses as well as additional statements, correspondence and supplemental material. (JB)

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Third University is Possible unravels the intimate relationship between the more than 200 US land grant institutions, American settler colonialism, and contemporary university expansion. Author la paperson cracks open uncanny connections between Indian boarding schools, Black education, and missionary schools in Kenya; and between the Department of Homeland Security and the University of California. Central to la paperson’s discussion is the “scyborg,” a decolonizing agent of technological subversion. Drawing parallels to Third Cinema and Black filmmaking assemblages, A Third University is Possible ultimately presents new ways of using language to develop a framework for hotwiring university “machines” to the practical work of decolonization. Forerunners: Ideas First is a thought-in-process series of breakthrough digital publications.
