Book excerpt: "A Nickel Can of Pork and Beans, is the autobiographical story of the life and career of Bryan Davidson told in his own humble, homespun and at times quite humorous words. Bryan Davidson enjoyed a long, illustrious career in radio. His fascination with radio began in his early teen years, just as the golden era of broadcasting began. Newly discharged from the U.S. Navy following World War II, he began as an announcer at WSON Henderson, Kentucky. The next several years found him employed in positions of announcer or manager at WIKY Evansville, Indiana, WITZ Jasper, Indiana, WPEO Peoria, Illinois and WRAY Princeton, Indiana. Eventually he and partner, Thomas Land, built, owned and managed WFIW Fairfield, Illinois, and WJBD Salem, Illinois. While he had written reams of radio commercials, this book, a record of his life, was Mr. Davidsons first attempt at narrative writing; and it chronicles his successes and his failures. His intended purpose for this memoir was to attest to his strong faith in Jesus Christ. He also hoped that his story might inspire young people to hold onto their dreams, regardless of financial hardship, temporary setbacks or discouragement. From his own experiences, he knew that dreams can be fulfilled and goals can be achieved, Life in a small Alabama coal-mining town during the Great Depression was hard as dried jerky and twice as tough. Mr. Davidsons recollections of his fathers years of working in coal mines and his mothers fierce determination to feed themselves and their only child is a tribute to the American spirit. Interlaced with humor, pathos and drama, Mr. Davidsons written words echo his distinctive radio voice. Against all odds, Bryan Davidson built and maintained a successful radio station in Salem, Illinois, one that continues to thrive and serve the community well.

Book excerpt: REMEMBER, YOU CARRY THE LIGHT The created beings called angels, as outlined in the King James Version of the Holy Bible, have amazing abilities. Not being bound by time or space, they are well qualified for the missions assigned them. Emmaline Tucker was born premature and with a difficulty that could take her life, and, whats more, her family was westward bound in a covered-wagon and passing through the Badlands of the Oklahoma Prairie. The minus angels were gleefully certain they could claim another life before it even started, but they failed to reckon with the Angels who were given charge over humans. The prairies of the Midwest were going through a great period of transformation in the late 1800s, and how important could one little girl be? It turns out that sometimes well, its better told in the book. Historical fiction by Joann Ellen Sisco.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The late Van Slayden trained on the PT-3 kite-like biplane in 1937, but he learned fighter pilot operations flying "by the seat of his pants," walking away from five crashes. Shortly after the invasion of Normandy, he landed on Utah Beach to help establish a US Army Air Forces' (AAF's) presence in Europe. He flew the P-47 Thunderbolt, a fighter-bomber, in combat over Northern France and commanded the 36th Fighter Group-the "Fightin' 36th- at Batogne, St. Vith, the Bridgehead at Remagen, Operations Grenade, Clarion, Varsity and other missions. His 22nd Fighter Squadron was the first in the AAF to land voluntarily on German soil. He was deep into Germany when the Nazis surrendered on May 8, 1945, which was remarkably anticlimactic. Van Slayden, a country boy from rural Tennessee, like so many of his contemporaries, stepped up to the challenge as part of the Greatest Generation.

Book excerpt: In 1924, an orphan train passes through the Midwest, and two teenagers, seeking a new life, find nothing but hardship when taken in to live on a farm in Michigan. Mercy, a teenage girl of mixed race, and a boy nicknamed Rope, who lost fingers in a factory accident, become virtual prisoners of Harlan and Estelle Nau, whose children died during the Spanish flu epidemic. After facing abuse, Mercy and Rope flee, making an arduous journey into sparsely populated northern Michigan, where Mercy believes she will find her aunt. After Harlan is found murdered on his farm, police captain Jim Kincaid pursues Mercy and Rope to the cold, barren villages on the Mackinac Straits, but his efforts are complicated by the reemergent Ku Klux Klan, which has formed a coalition with the police deputy Milt Waters and the Dingley brothers, who run a local bootleg operation. Resolute and intrepid, Mercy and Rope develop a bond of mutual trust that helps them navigate a stark American landscape shaped by prejudice, hypocrisy, and fear.

Book excerpt: Collected primarily in metropolitan New York and Philadelphia during the classic era of black street poetry (i.e., during the late 1960s and early 1970s) these raps, signifyings, toasts, boasts, jokes and children's rhymes will delight general readers as well as scholars. Ranging from the simple rhymes that accompany children's games to verbally inventive insults and the epic exploits of traditional characters like Shine and Stagger Lee, these texts sound the deep rivers of culture, echoing two continents. Onwuchekwa Jemie's introductory essay situates them in a globally pan-African context and relates them to more recent forms of oral culture such as rap and spoken word.

Book excerpt: New York is the greatest restaurant city the world has ever seen. In Appetite City, the former New York Times restaurant critic William Grimes leads us on a grand historical tour of New York's dining culture. Beginning with the era when simple chophouses and oyster bars dominated the culinary scene, he charts the city's transformation into the world restaurant capital it is today. Appetite City takes us on a unique and delectable journey, from the days when oysters and turtle were the most popular ingredients in New York cuisine, through the era of the fifty-cent French and Italian table d'hôtes beloved of American "Bohemians," to the birth of Times Square—where food and entertainment formed a partnership that has survived to this day. Enhancing his tale with more than one hundred photographs, rare menus, menu cards, and other curios and illustrations (many never before seen), Grimes vividly describes the dining styles, dishes, and restaurants succeeding one another in an unfolding historical panorama: the deluxe ice cream parlors of the 1850s, the boisterous beef-and-beans joints along Newspaper Row in the 1890s, the assembly-line experiment of the Automat, the daring international restaurants of the 1939 World's Fair, and the surging multicultural city of today. By encompassing renowned establishments such as Delmonico's and Le Pavillon as well as the Bowery restaurants where a meal cost a penny, he reveals the ways in which the restaurant scene mirrored the larger forces shaping New York, giving us a deliciously original account of the history of America's greatest city. Rich with incident, anecdote, and unforgettable personalities, Appetite City offers the dedicated food lover or the casual diner an irresistible menu of the city's most savory moments.

Book excerpt: Introduction As a child, I realized the great importance of my grandfather’s work in the ministry and enjoyed hours of listening to the stories of his youth and young adulthood that shaped the preacher who had such a strong impact on those who would hear him speak. I also benefited from visits where we heard stories of his youth and education. His life and work provides us with an example that any preacher of the bible could admire. In the process of writing this book, it has been a great joy to revisit the inspiring stories he tells and learn more about his life. Brother Helton is viewed by many as a great friend, extraordinary minister, admired brother, example, and faithful servant of Jesus Christ. At the time of my writing this, Brother Helton’s preaching ministry has covered some sixty-three years, and continues. Brother Helton continues to be in demand for supply preaching, weddings, and revival meetings. The preparation of this biography offers an expression of my gratitude, love, and admiration for my grandfather. Throughout my life, I have had the pleasure of seeing the impact of his work on others as well as benefited from his example.

Environmental sources of metal exposure include jewelry, clothing, electronic devices, coins, leather, diet, and occupational exposure. Metal allergy may result in allergic contact dermatitis and systemic contact dermatitis, as well as several less common manifestations. Further, metal allergy has been associated with device failure and/or dermatitis following implantation of medical devices and dental implants. As metals are ubiquitous, this book will be indispensable for a wide range of clinicians and investigators. This handy reference will meet the needs of all health professionals and investigators who are interested in metal allergy and its diagnosis and management.
