Book excerpt: "For decades, molecular beam scattering experiments have been used to understand the forces and dynamics that are involved in chemical reactions at the quantum mechanical level. Using millimeter/submillimeter-waves the dynamics for the scattering of a bimolecular collision can be probed via pure rotational spectroscopy. Focus of this research is the reaction between ozone and chlorine, which has been widely studied due its key role in the catalytic destruction cycle of ozone in the atmosphere. For this research, a new crossed molecular beam apparatus was successfully designed and constructed. The apparatus consists of independently rotating arms to allow for reactants to be collided at a wide range of angles, and therefore relative velocities, and can easily be adapted for use in numerous types of scattering experiments. Ozone was successfully created and trapped to produce a molecular beam, which has been characterized from a pinhole and slit nozzle. Though no products have been seen from the experiments to date, the critical work has been completed so the system can be optimized in the future."--Abstract from author supplied metadata.

Book excerpt: A variety of gas phase reactions of barium and tin atoms were studied using a crossed molecular beams machine with a universal quadrupole mass filter based detection system incorporating a time-of-flight (TOF) spectrometer for velocity analysis. Center-of-mass (CM) reactive product recoil angle and relative recoil energy distributions were measured for the following reactions: (1) Ba + N2O--BaO + N2, (2) Ba + CO2--BaO + CO, (3) Ba + O2--BaO + O, (4) Sn + Cl2--SnCl + Cl, (5) Sn + CH3I--SnI + CH3, (6) Sn + n-C3H--I--SnI + C3H--I, and (7) Sn + CCl4--SnCl + CCl3. At relative collision energies below 15kJmole−1, the BaO product of reaction (1) is seen to be sharply backwards scattered with only 10 to 20 percent of the total available energy in product recoil energy. These results are consistent with near 100 percent efficiency for production of electronically excited BaO. Evidence of a significant effect of N2O vibrational energy on the total reactive cross section is presented. Reaction (2), at collision energies as high as 31kJmole−1, and reaction (3), at a collision energy of 13kJmole−1, both seem to proceed via a long-lived complex, and their product recoil energy distributions are reasonably well fit by the transition state theory of Herschbach et al. No evidence of a CO2 internal energy effect on the total reactive cross section for reaction (2) was found. The SnCl product of reaction (4) was predominately forward scattered with low product recoil energy; the SnI product of reactions (5) and (6) were sharply backwards scattered with relatively high recoil energies; the SnCl product of reaction (7) was sideways scattered. Thus the reactions of tin atoms studied here are very similar to the corresponding alkali and alkaline earth metal atom reactions. A minicomputer interface for collection and display of TOF spectrums and product angular distributions was built using a DEC PDP8/e computer described in detail.

Book excerpt: This dissertation describes the use of a new molecular beam apparatus designed to use tunable VUV synchrotron radiation for photoionization of the products from scattering experiments. The apparatus was built at the recently constructed Advanced Light Source at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, a third generation 1-2 GeV synchrotron radiation source. The new apparatus is applied to investigations of the dynamics of unimolecular reactions, photodissociation experiments, and bimolecular reactions, crossed molecular beam experiments. The first chapter describes the new apparatus and the VUV radiation used for photoionization. This is followed by a number of examples of the many advantages provided by using VUV photoionization in comparison with the traditional technique of electron bombardment ionization. At the end of the chapter there is a discussion of the data analysis employed in these scattering experiments. The remaining four chapters are complete investigations of the dynamics of four chemical systems using the new apparatus and provide numerous additional examples of the advantages provided by VUV photoionizaiton of the products. Chapters 2-4 are photofragment translational spectroscopy studies of the photodissociation dynamics of dimethyl sulfoxide, acrylonitrile, and vinyl chloride following absorption at 193 mn. All of these systems have multiple dissociation channels and provide good examples of the ability of the new apparatus to unravel the complex UV photodissociation dynamics that can arise in small polyatomic molecules.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report describes the construction of an advanced, high-resolution, photofragmentation-translation spectrometer. The major features of the machine are as follows. It is capable of measuring the differential, cross-section and translational-energy distributions of collisionless, photochemical events. It has a rotating, molecular-beam source and a fixed detector. This allows extreme temperatures in the bakeout process which will give very low background in the detector. The detector is an advanced design, electron-impact ionization, quadrupole mass-spectrometer. The pumping system uses cryopumping and turbomolecular pumps. This will increase the pumping speed for hydrocarbons and allow the low background detection of hydrocarbon masses. The purpose of this machine is to measure the product translational-energy distributions of photochemical processes, especially the photodecomposition of rocket fuel prototypes, so called 'energetic materials'. The low vapor pressure of these substances requires an efficient detector with a low background at hydrocarbon masses. (Author).

Book excerpt: A proposed atomic and moleuclar beam apparatus is described for photon interaction studies using the National Sychrotron Light Source at the Brookhaven National Laboratory. This apparatus will employ ultrahigh vacuum techniques compatible with storage ring operation. Supersonic nozzle sources will be used to produce the beams and signal detection will be accomplished using a quadrupole mass analysis system. The equipment is intended for use both by in-house and outside users and primary consideration has been given to flexibility of design. The application of photoionization techniques to the study of crossed beam reactive scattering with particular emphasis on internal energy distribution analysis is discussed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Includes a foreword by Major General David A. Rubenstein. From the editor: "71F, or "71 Foxtrot," is the AOC (area of concentration) code assigned by the U.S. Army to the specialty of Research Psychology. Qualifying as an Army research psychologist requires, first of all, a Ph.D. from a research (not clinical) intensive graduate psychology program. Due to their advanced education, research psychologists receive a direct commission as Army officers in the Medical Service Corps at the rank of captain. In terms of numbers, the 71F AOC is a small one, with only 25 to 30 officers serving in any given year. However, the 71F impact is much bigger than this small cadre suggests. Army research psychologists apply their extensive training and expertise in the science of psychology and social behavior toward understanding, preserving, and enhancing the health, well being, morale, and performance of Soldiers and military families. As is clear throughout the pages of this book, they do this in many ways and in many areas, but always with a scientific approach. This is the 71F advantage: applying the science of psychology to understand the human dimension, and developing programs, policies, and products to benefit the person in military operations. This book grew out of the April 2008 biennial conference of U.S. Army Research Psychologists, held in Bethesda, Maryland. This meeting was to be my last as Consultant to the Surgeon General for Research Psychology, and I thought it would be a good idea to publish proceedings, which had not been done before. As Consultant, I'd often wished for such a document to help explain to people what it is that Army Research Psychologists "do for a living." In addition to our core group of 71Fs, at the Bethesda 2008 meeting we had several brand-new members, and a number of distinguished retirees, the "grey-beards" of the 71F clan. Together with longtime 71F colleagues Ross Pastel and Mark Vaitkus, I also saw an unusual opportunity to capture some of the history of the Army Research Psychology specialty while providing a representative sample of current 71F research and activities. It seemed to us especially important to do this at a time when the operational demands on the Army and the total force were reaching unprecedented levels, with no sign of easing, and with the Army in turn relying more heavily on research psychology to inform its programs for protecting the health, well being, and performance of Soldiers and their families."

Book excerpt: Electronic and photoelectron spectroscopy can provide extraordinarily detailed information on the properties of molecules and are in widespread use in the physical and chemical sciences. Applications extend beyond spectroscopy into important areas such as chemical dynamics, kinetics and atmospheric chemistry. This book aims to provide the reader with a firm grounding of the basic principles and experimental techniques employed. The extensive use of case studies effectively illustrates how spectra are assigned and how information can be extracted, communicating the matter in a compelling and instructive manner. Topics covered include laser-induced fluorescence, resonance-enhanced multiphoton ionization, cavity ringdown and ZEKE spectroscopy. The volume is for advanced undergraduate and graduate students taking courses in spectroscopy and will also be useful to anyone encountering electronic and/or photoelectron spectroscopy during their research.
