Book excerpt: We consider interference suppression in several wireless communication systems. The first topic treated is self-interference encountered among cooperating systems, for example, the self-interference that is encountered in cognitive radio systems and ultra-wideband (UWB) communication systems. Both single-carrier, direct sequence signals and multicarrier signals are considered, and the effects of the interference on the performance of a direct sequence UWB system that employs channel state estimation in the presence of the interference is evaluated. The second topic that is treated is the mitigation of narrowband interference in block-modulated multicarrier systems. Two schemes, multicarrier code-division multiple access (MC-CDMA) and orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM), are investigated. The inherent frequency diversity of MC-CDMA through the use of spreading codes allows for robustness against interference. Conversely, OFDM must employ a signal processing technique to suppress the interference due to its lack of frequency diversity. The performance of OFDM is improved with the addition of forward error correction (FEC) coding in the frequency domain, thereby providing the system with frequency diversity. The third topic is the suppression of interference in multiple input, multiple output (MIMO) wireless communication systems that employ multiple-transmit and multiple-receive antennas to increase the data rate and achieve signal diversity in fading multipath channels. Interference in MIMO wireless communication systems usually consists of intersymbol interference (ISI) due to channel multipath dispersion and cross-talk, or interchannel interference, due to the simultaneous transmissions from the multiple-transmit antennas. The focus of the section is on point-to-multipoint (broadcast) MIMO systems in which the channel characteristics are assumed to be known at the transmitter, so that interference mitigation can be performed at the transmitter.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This textbook, now in its 5th edition, provides updated state-of-the-art coverage of spread-spectrum communication systems with new applications throughout the book. In this edition, the author extends sections with more comprehensive details about many topics. Some of the more complex sections have been rewritten to make them easier to understand. New subsections, sections, figures, and problems have been added throughout the book. New or expanded topics include frequency-hopping systems with multisymbol CPFSK detection, derivations of spread-spectrum systems with differential data modulations, chaotic systems, channel-state information, and MIMO. As with previous edition, the author presents mathematical analyses of spread-spectrum systems that provide insights into their operations and limitations and are of theoretical and practical interest to both researchers and system designers. He includes updated problems at the end of each chapter, which are intended to assist readers in consolidating their knowledge and to give practice in analytical techniques. Eight appendices provide the mathematical tools that are useful in understanding the main text.

Book excerpt: This report presents research results focused on the mitigation of both narrowband and multiple access interference in direct sequence spread spectrum communication systems. Both linear and nonlinear adaptive algorithmic approaches are developed and reported. Specific attention has been paid to making the algorithmic practicable. In addition to the algorithmic development, a software simulation for a code division multiple access system is developed using a commercially available programming environment.

This book was released on 2007 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We first present a statistical parallel interference cancellation (STPIC) technique. Here we propose two different methods: instantaneous STPIC (ISTPIC), in which IC is performed only on the bits whose absolute log likelihood ratio (LLR) is below a pre-selected threshold, and block STPIC (BSTPIC), in which IC is performed only on the blocks whose average signal-to-interference-plus-noise-ratio (SINR) is below a pre-selected threshold. Both LLR and SINR statistics reduce to quantities simple to obtain. It has been shown that both ISTPIC and BSTPIC can achieve performance similar to or better than conventional full PIC (FPIC), but with significantly reduced computational complexity. It is also shown that the proposed ISTPIC has larger performance gain than conventional FPIC in higher loading case where efficient interference cancellation techniques are mostly needed. We also propose a new generalized soft limiter (GSL) that combines the advantage of hard decision and partial soft decision. In GSL, hard decisions are made on "reliable" signals with absolute amplitudes larger than a threshold, whereas partial soft decisions are made on "unreliable" signals with absolute amplitudes less than the threshold. We have shown that PIC using the proposed GSL has performance similar to that using hyperbolic tangent decision, which has been shown to be the optimal decision in the single user case with Gaussian interference and noise, but with easier implementation. Furthermore, we propose new techniques that combine the STPIC with partial PIC or other improved decision techniques, which have shown to be capable of achieving performance similar to or better than original techniques with reduced computational complexity. We also evaluate and compare the performance of different PIC techniques in the presence of imperfect channel estimation and near-far effects. Performance analysis and comparison of different PIC techniques have also been done in multi-rate DS-CDMA systems with different schemes: variable spreading gain, multi-code, and variable chip rate. Finally, we review narrowband interference (NBI) suppression techniques and investigate the performance of a decision feedback scheme aided by the proposed GSL-PIC in the presence of NBI.

Currently, a technical in-depth book on this subject, which has a similar detailed exposure of the recent advances in CDMA, M-ary CDMA and MC-CDMA, is unavailable. A further attraction of the joint treatment of these topics is that it allows the reader to view their design trade-offs in a comparative context. Divided into five main parts: Part I: provides a detailed introduction to the subject of CDMA systems designed for employment in various application Part II: deals with the currently hot topic of genetic algorithm assisted multiuser detection Part III: gives a detailed account of new, reduced-complexity M-ary CDMA schemes Part IV: considers a range of novel MC-CDMA schemes which have the potential of supporting numerous design objectives Part V: provides an overview of the 3G wireless system proposals and characterises the expected network capacity gains attained with the aid of adaptive CDMA systems By providing an all-encompassing self-contained treatment this groundbreaking volume will have appeal to researchers, postgraduate students, academics practising research and development engineers working for wireless communications and computer networking companies, as well as senior undergraduate students and technical managers in the field.

Book excerpt: [Enter Abstract Body]This paper outlines a multiple access technique which exploits the interleaving as only means of user separation instead of by different signatures as in a conventional code division multiple-access (CDMA) scheme. It examines a very simple iterative chip-by-chip multi-user detection strategy for spread spectrum communication systems. The given scheme can achieve near single user performance in situations with very large numbers of users while maintaining very low receiver complexity. This technique shows that high performance can be maintained in multi-path environments. IDMA inherits many advantages from CDMA, such as diversity against fading and mitigation of the worst-case user interference problem. A low-cost iterative chip-by-chip multi-user detection algorithm is also described with complexity independent of the user number and increasing linearly with the path number.

Book excerpt: "In this dissertation, the system performance of multiple access schemes in UltraWideband (UWB) communications is evaluated in a multipath and multiuser fading environment. Three multiple access schemes, namely Time Hopping (TH), Direct Sequence (DS)and hybrid Direct Sequence-Time Hopping (DS-TH) are investigated. The TH multiple access has been well studied in Radar communication systems. This research extends the previous studies by applying three pulse modulations techniques, including pulse position modulation, pulse shift keying and pulse amplitude modulation. The idea of the DS multiple access schemes is also generalized from the well-known Direct Sequence-Code Division Multiple Access (DS-CDMA) cellular systems to UWB radios. It is shown that the DS multiple access has the potential to reach higher data transmission rates and that TH techniques are more resistant to fading. The DS-TH multiple access schemes are proposed by combining the advantages of both TH and DS multiple access schemes. Results show that the DS-TH ultra wideband achieves better system performance while maintaining the required data transmission rate and multiple access capacity. The system performance is illustrated and examined in terms of the signal to noise plus interference ratio, bit error rate and outage probability."--Abstract.
