Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Titanic scholars contend that the demise of "the unsinkable ship" left more behind than a memory of April 15, 1912, as an important point in history. Through books, films, stories, and songs, the archetypal shipwreck has endured as a metaphor for the perils of mankind's hubris and the fallibility of technology. In 1985, the discovery of the long-missing wreckage two miles below the surface of the Atlantic revitalized interest in the Titanic and spawned a new generation of books, films, and, for the first time, websites, and computer games. James Cameron's blockbuster Titanic became the biggest movie of all time and engendered still greater popular interest in the tragic event. This bibliography is a survey of the immense volume of literary, dramatic, and commercial endeavors that came out of history's most compelling shipwreck. Organized by genre in accessible categories and short entries, the book includes Titanic-inspired documentaries, narrative films, children's books, histories, short stories, novels, plays, articles, essays, software, websites, poems, and songs. Each entry includes a brief review, bibliographic information, and the technical details of the specific source. The reviews include subjective analysis designed to reflect the usefulness of the source and to be of benefit to researchers and scholars. Five appendices include lists of the actors appearing in more than one Titanic film, brief film and television appearances of the Titanic, films never or not yet released, books that survived the wreck, and books written by passengers.

A Mersey Mariner: When a passenger is found dead on the Alexandra Rose, Merseyside Police's Specialist Murder Investigation team is called in to solve the case. As they investigate, they discover that the roots of the crime stretch all the way to the depths of the Amazonian Rainforest. With a cast of characters including a billionaire entrepreneur, mysterious passengers, medical researchers, and ruthless mercenaries, Andy Ross and his team must use all their skills to solve the case of the Mersey Mariner before it's too late. Will they be able to unravel the mystery and bring the culprits to justice? A Very Mersey Murder: The year is 1966 and England has just won the soccer World Cup, but the celebrations are cut short when the body of a young barmaid is found near an abandoned lighthouse outside Liverpool. Two more murders follow, and the cases remain unsolved. Almost forty years later, a new series of murders begins in the same location, with chilling similarities to the unsolved crimes from decades ago. DI Andy Ross and his team are tasked with solving the case before the next murder takes place. With the clock ticking and the pressure mounting, can Ross crack the case and bring the killer to justice? Last Train to Lime Street: As the late night train from Manchester to Liverpool races towards the city, it collides with the body of a man lying under a bridge. When the police arrive, they discover that the victim is a well-known American adult movie director. As DI Andy Ross and his team investigate the suspicious death, they soon realize that the victim had a long list of enemies who may have wanted him dead. Was his murder personal or professional? With the clock ticking and the list of suspects growing, can Ross and his team solve the case before the killer strikes again?

Book excerpt: Chronicles of the filth, foulness, and public health disasters found by “inspectors of nuisances” in a newly industrialized world. In the nineteenth century, as towns grew, Britain became increasingly grimy. The causes of dirt and pollution were defined legally as “nuisances” and, in 1835, the new local authorities very rapidly appointed an army of “inspectors of nuisances.” This book reveals the Victorian era from a very different point of view: it offers the inspectors’ eyewitness accounts and details the workings of the Parliamentary Committees that were set up in an attempt to ease the struggle against filth. Inspectors battled untreated human excreta in rivers black as ink, as well as unsanitary drinking water, home to tadpoles and portions of frogs so large that they blocked taps. They dealt with putrid animal carcasses in cattle markets and slaughterhouses, not to mention the unabated smoke from mill chimneys that covered towns with a thick layer of black grime. Boggle Hole Pond was a source of drinking water full of dead dogs; ice cream was coated in bugs; stinking rotting crabs, poultry, and pigeon smells polluted the air. Even the corpses floating out of badly drained burial grounds were “nuisances,” leading to the practice of burning the remains of the dead. This is the history of a grimy century in the throes of the Industrial Revolution, illustrating the many ways in which the country responded to the ever growing demands of a new world.
