Book excerpt: This is the hardback version. Linda J. Alexander's exhaustive research has produced an unforgettable biography of Jack Kelly, the 1950s movie and television star. In real life, Jack was a child performer, the son of New York model Nan Kelly, brother of actress Nancy Kelly, and the brother-in-law of actor Edmond O'Brien and cinematographer Fred Jackman Jr. He was also a child star in the late 1930s. He appeared in A Crooked Road with Mickey Rooney (1954), To Hell and Back (1955) with Audie Murphy, and the Science Fiction classic The Forbidden Planet (1956) with Leslie Nielsen. Jack is perhaps best known today in his role as James Garner's brother on the classic American television Western series, Maverick (1957-1962). In the late 1960s and 1970s, he continued to appear on American television as the game show host of Sale of the Century, and he also starred in movies, such as Get Christie Love (1975), and again on television in the Hardy Boys and Nancy Drew series, among many others. Jack was more than a Hollywood cinema star. He also served as a city councilman and two-term Mayor of Huntington Beach, California, in addition to his work as a newspaper publisher. He loved some of the most beautiful women in Hollywood, became a husband, and would probably tell everyone that his greatest joy was in being a father. This biography draws from exhaustive research and numerous interviews with Jack's family, friends, and co-stars. The book includes a treasure trove of professional and personal family photographs.

Book excerpt: A first-rate charmer with a devilish twinkle in his eye, Billy MacKenzie was a maverick figure within the music industry whose wild and mischievous spirit possibly did him more harm than good. As frontman of the Associates, gifted with an otherwordly, octave-scaling operatic voice, MacKenzie, together with partner Alan Rankine, enjoyed Top Twenty chart success in 1982. At the height of their success, however, they split. Over the ensuing years, MacKenzie gained a reputation for his unhinged career tactics, generous spirit and knack for squandering large amounts of record-company money. Born in Dundee in 1957 he was the eldest son in a large Catholic family. He was bullied at school and sought refuge in music. He was a schemer and dreamer, a breeder of whippets and a bisexual who kept quiet about his private life. During his lifetime, his unique vocal gift attracted the attention of Shirley Bassey, Annie Lennox and Bjork. However, in the tradition of Scott Walker, Syd Barrett and Nick Drake, MacKenzie's tale is one of thwarted talent and, ultimately, tragedy. He was found dead, aged 39, at his father's home in Scotland, on 22 January 1997, having taken an overdose.

Book excerpt: A biography of Thomas Sowell, one of America's most influential conservative thinkers Thomas Sowell is one of the great social theorists of our age. In a career spanning more than a half century, he has written over thirty books, covering topics from economic history and social inequality to political theory, race, and culture. His bold and unsentimental assaults on liberal orthodoxy have endeared him to many readers but have also enraged fellow intellectuals, the civil-rights establishment, and much of the mainstream media. The result has been a lack of acknowledgment of his scholarship among critics who prioritize political correctness. In the first-ever biography of Sowell, Jason Riley gives this iconic thinker his due and responds to the detractors. Maverick showcases Sowell's most significant writings and traces the life events that shaped his ideas and resulted in a Black orphan from the Jim Crow South becoming one of our foremost public intellectuals.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memoirs of Mary A. Maverick Samuel Augustus Maverick, my husband, was born July 23rd, 1803, at Pendleton, South Carolina. His parents were Samuel Maverick and his wife Elizabeth Anderson. She was the daughter of General Robert Anderson, of South Carolina, and of Revolutionary note, and his wife Ann Thompson of Virginia. Samuel Maverick was once a prominent merchant of Charleston, S.C., where he had raised himself from the almost abject poverty, to which the war of the Revolution had reduced his family, to a position of great affluence. It is said of him that he sent ventures to the Celestial Empire, and that he shipped the first bale of cotton from America to Europe. Some mer cantile miscarriage caused him subsequently to withdraw from, and close out, his business, and he retired to Pendle ton District* in the north west corner of South Carolina, at the foot of the mountains. Here he spent the balance of his days, and invested and speculated largely in lands in South Carolina, Georgia and Alabama.

Book excerpt: “An absorbing story about how the Lincoln veteran George Watt managed to escape from Nazi-occupied Belgium.”—San Francisco Review of Books November 1943: American flyer George Watt parachutes out of his burning warplane and lands in rural Nazi-occupied Belgium. Escape from Hitler’s Europe is the incredible story of his getaway—how brave villagers spirited him to Brussels to connect with the Comet Line, a rescue arm of the Belgian resistance. This was a gravely dangerous mission, especially for a Jewish soldier who had fought against Franco in the Spanish Civil War. Watt recounts dodging the Gestapo, entering Paris via the underground, and finally, crossing the treacherous Pyrenees into Spain. In 1985, he returned to Belgium and discovered an astonishing postscript to his wartime experiences. “A story of what is best in human beings triumphing over what is worst.”—John Sayles, author of Yellow Earth “One of those rare little narratives that engage the reader from the first page to the last . . . It is about the human spirit and those willing to risk their lives for a stranger.”—Library Journal "A hell of an adventure story."―Ring Lardner, Jr., author of The Ecstasy of Owen Muir “This is one of my favorite books about World War II, and the first I have read that is about the Comet Line and the people who helped with running it.”—Armchair Interviews “This is an interesting and exciting account that provides a first-person examination of the plight of an individual airman, and insights into the scope, risks, and techniques of the Belgian and French underground movements.”—Col. Stetson M. Siler, USAF (Ret.)

[Lanigan] adeptly analyzes Austin's life...and also offers insightful analyses of Austin's writing. Like other females of her period, she received too little recognition for her original prose style and social critiques. Thanks to Song of a Maverick, we hear Mary Austin's voice more clearly and appreciatively."ÑCarol J. Singley in American Literature "[Lanigan] provides illuminating sociological background and lucidly marshals the existing biolgraphical data."ÑChoice "Mary Hunter Austin was a well-known and respected author and activitst in her lifetime but is little known in ours. In this excellent biography...[Lanigan] chose to focus on a few central relationships in Austin's life, to explore in some depth a few central texts, and to understand the interior life of her subject. She has done a splendid job."ÑAnn J. Lane in the Journal of American History

Book excerpt: In 1968, future "gonzo journalist" Hunter S. Thompson predicted Bob Bone would write a book someday "on How to Beat the NY Big Salary-Death-in-Life Syndrome." This, at last, is that book. Robert W. Bone has visited every continent and covered at least 75 countries. For four decades, thousands of travelers to Hawaii, Australia and New Zealand carried the latest editions of his prize-winning Maverick Guides or read his groundbreaking work on the "last frontier," Fielding's Alaska and the Yukon. He wrote travel articles for magazines, and using his personal syndication system, hundreds more for the travel sections of newspapers throughout the U.S. and Canada. Thompson joined him on some of his early adventures in the U.S. and abroad, admiring Bone's ability to live the kind of life that office drones dream of. Put the formula down on paper, Thompson wrote him: "Shit, you'd sell 50,000 copies in NY alone." Fire Bone! is an unvarnished memoir of thrilling experiences with newspapers, magazines and book publishers, and the childhood and youthful love affairs that led up to them. Bone has been shot at and robbed. He's battled American and foreign bureaucrats. But as his grandmother predicted, everything he did "would always come out for the best." He's climbed to the top of a mast at sea and planted a revolutionary flag at a world's fair. And he's never been fired from a job. Fire Bone! explains all that, too.

Book excerpt: International phenomenon Angie Thomas revisits Garden Heights seventeen years before the events of The Hate U Give in this searing and poignant exploration of Black boyhood and manhood. A Printz Honor Book! If there’s one thing seventeen-year-old Maverick Carter knows, it’s that a real man takes care of his family. As the son of a former gang legend, Mav does that the only way he knows how: dealing for the King Lords. With this money he can help his mom, who works two jobs while his dad’s in prison. Life’s not perfect, but with a fly girlfriend and a cousin who always has his back, Mav’s got everything under control. Until, that is, Maverick finds out he’s a father. Suddenly he has a baby, Seven, who depends on him for everything. But it’s not so easy to sling dope, finish school, and raise a child. So when he’s offered the chance to go straight, he takes it. In a world where he’s expected to amount to nothing, maybe Mav can prove he’s different. When King Lord blood runs through your veins, though, you can't just walk away. Loyalty, revenge, and responsibility threaten to tear Mav apart, especially after the brutal murder of a loved one. He’ll have to figure out for himself what it really means to be a man.
