Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual of History of the United States, for the Use of Schools The work now given to the public, originated in the writer's desire to obtain a book that should lessen the labor of teacher and scholar in the study of History. Owing to the multiplicity of dates, and minute events, as well as the length of the narrative in the histories in general use, the Writer, in common with several of his fellow teachers, had been compelled to go over chapter by chapter, eliminating the most important events, and by means of written synoptical questions, endeavoring to remedy the fault of the larger works. This labor had to be repeated with each succeeding class. It therefore became apparent that it would be easier to write a work which should do away with this really great labor. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the United States for Schools The aim of the authors in writing this book has been to present what seemed to them the main historical developments in American history, the knowledge of which will enable the pupil to understand 'he social, political, and economic institutions which he finds about him in this land wherein he lives. In doing this we have tried to use simple language, to show clearly the relation of one fact to another, and to keep the story constantly moving forward. We have sought to interest not by the selection of the merely entertaining facts which are often the things of least value, but by choice of the facts that have meant something in our growth as a nation. This is first of all a text-book and not a story-book. We make no apology for the omission of many of the yarns of American his tory. If history is worth teaching at all, it is worth teaching as causal, vital, meaning history. We heartily approve of reading his tory for mere pleasure. History is, we believe, in many of its high est literary forms, most delightful and valuable mere reading, but for serious study there are certain essentials which should not be disguised or palliated by facts which are only entertaining, and not essentially significant. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the United States: For the Use of Schools and Academies The utility of history as a branch of school instruction is now so generally admitted, that it is hardly necessary to offer any arguments in its favour; and the necessity of giving the history of our own country the first place, is equally obvious to the reflecting reader. The manner in which this interesting subject should be presented to the mind of the young student, is the only point of inquiry with writers and teachers. In preparing the following history, the author has pursued that course which appeared to him best adapted to unite sound and thorough instruction with entertainment. Beginning with the discovery of the New World, and endeavouring to present the series of events in a clear and connected narrative, rejecting whatever he deemed irrelevant or unimportant, and dwelling chiefly on those striking features of the subject which give it vividness and character, he has brought it down to the present day. Although the considerable period embraced, the multitude of characters and events delineated, and the extent of the field in which they figure, have rendered the preservation of historical unity no easy task, he has laboured to give the work such a degree of compactness as would enable the student to perceive the relation of all it Darts, and to grasp the whole without any very difficult exercise of comprehension. Instead of dividing the history into periods, according to an arbitrary arrangement of events, he has chosen to adopt the ordinary system of chapters, founded on the natural divisions of the subject. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the United States and Its People: For the Use of Schools The proper study of mankind is man, and the real importance of history lies in the light that it throws upon humanity. For this reason liberal attention has been here given to the domestic and social life of the people, their dress, their food, their modes of thought and feeling, and their ways of making a livelihood. The succession of events in minor wars would only weary the attention, but the modes of attack and defense and the character of the arms of the various belligerents are essential facts in the history of man in this New World. And the story of the progress of civilization, as marked by the introduction of new inventions and by changes in modes of living, is of primary importance in any history written in the modern spirit. This is from first to last a schoolbook. No other aim has been in view in its preparation than that of making the best possible teaching book of American history. The length and arrangement of the chapters, the questions, topical and geo graphical studies, and skeleton outlines, as well as the reviews, are all arranged with reference to the needs of teacher and pupil. An effort has here been made to apply to history in a thorough and practical way the great Pestalozzian principle of teaching through the eye. The suggestions for blackboard illustrations. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the United States This textbook is based on the plan of study recommended for the seventh and eighth grades by the Committee Of Eight Of the American Historical Association. The work for the sixth grade has been given in a shorter book, entitled Introductory American History. About two-thirds Of that book concern the beginnings in Great Britain and Europe of the civilization which the people of the United States share with other peoples Of European race. The remainder contains descriptions Of the discoveries and early settlements of America, principally in the sixteenth century. This volume for the upper grades Opens with a chapter which repeats briefly the story of early discovery and settlement. The chapter may be used as a review in those schools which use the Introductory American History. Teachers who do not use that book will find in the chapter the essential facts of the period. American history is so rich and varied that the most serious ques tion which confronts the authors Of a textbook is that of selection and emphasis. If space is to be found for adequate treat ment Of the most characteristic features of our national develop ment, especially Of those within the comprehension Of the pupil Of the seventh or eighth grade, certain phases Of the political and military history Of the country must be reserved for later study. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Library Manual of the Constitutional and Political History of the United States, With Outlines, References and Tables: An Adaptation of the Laboratory Method of Investigation, for the Use of Students of United States History In the universities and colleges, history was one of the first branches to benefit from the reform. Young professors, returning from Germany, imbued with the enthusiasm for careful and scientific research that prevails in the great continental universities introduced the seminar and the laboratory into the new history courses recently offered by all our higher institutions of education. Men have learned that there is as much fascination in conducting a research in, history as in chemistry - frequently the results are more valuable. But the reform has made itself felt but slowly and feebly in schools of elementary and secondary rank. The dry-as-dust text books and monotonous daily recitation of the same committed to memory have remained in the high schools, normal schools and smaller colleges. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Topical Analysis of United States History: With Library References for Teachers and Pupils The library method of teaching history is no longer an experiment in the best colleges and normal schools. While the exclusive library method of studying history can not be adopted in the elementary schools, a combination of the text book and library method can, by assigning lessons by topics, and re quiring them to be worked out by the use of the school text and reference books. Teachers generally agree with Woodrow Wilson, that no subject can be learned from a single book. The exclusive text book method confines the pupil to the views of one author, prevents discussion, and does little to stimulate thought, or to arouse interest. By the use of a single book the pupil is apt to fall into the habit of accepting without question what one author says; the habit of investigating for oneself is not cultivated. The tendency is to commit the words of the text without comprehending the thought. One of the most important results that comes from any study is the power to think and investigate for oneself; and this is best secured in the study of his tory by the library method. It has been the aim in the analysis given in this manual to break up theold, but common, practice of assigning the lesson by so much of the text, and instead (in the words of Arnold Tompkins), to give points to be worked out, which compel the pupil to use the text, the reference book and every other means at his command. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual of the Ohio School System: Consisting of an Historical View of Its Progress, and a Republication of the School Laws in Force School Districts in cities, towns, etc. The people have been furnished with the General Act of 1853, but not with those enactments for the better regulation of schools in cities and incorporated villages, which powerfully influence the School Sys tem of the State - constituting, as they do, the models for the imitation and emulation of the townships. It is hoped that this history of the origin, progress and present condition of the School System: of Ohio, may serve the two-fold purpose of preventing hasty and inconsiderate legislation, effecting radical changes in the system, and of indicating the educational spirit and tendency of the' age. By exhibiting, in a condensed form, those enactments in relation to schools which have been fully and fairly tried and then repealed because they failed to accomplish what was designed, this compilation, it is believed, will tend to prevent the re-enactment of those provisions in former school laws, which, for the want of efficiency, have been thus rejected.
