Book excerpt: Irish-British statesman, economist, and philosopher, Edmund Burke wrote this letter when he got stripped of his pension in 1796. He responded by supporting his ideas on government economy and showing how his and other allowances were not conflicting with these ideas. Burke attacked the French Revolution and mentioned how its views endangered the very people after his pension, probably because he was hostile to precisely these ideas. This letter was praised a century and a half after being written as the most significant piece of invective in the English language.

This book was released on 2015-11-03 with total page 1162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The most important works of Edmund Burke, the greatest political thinker of the past three centuries, are gathered here in one comprehensive volume. Accompanying his influential masterpiece, Reflections on the Revolution in France, is a selection of pamphlets, speeches, public letters, private correspondence and, for the first time, two important and previously uncollected early essays. Philosopher, statesman, and founder of conservatism, Burke was a dazzling orator and a visionary theorist who spent his long political career fighting abuses of power. He wrote at a time of great change, against the backdrop of the revolt of the American colonies, the expansion of the British Empire, the collapse of Ireland, and the French Revolution. Burke argued passionately in support of the American revolutionaries and in equally impassioned opposition to the horrors of the unfolding French Revolution. Making a case for upholding established rights and customs, and advocating incremental reform rather than radical revolutionary change, Burke’s writings have profoundly influenced modern democracies up to the present day. Edited and Introduced by Jesse Norman.

Book Synopsis Panopticon versus New South Wales and other writings on Australia by : Tim Causer
Download or read book Panopticon versus New South Wales and other writings on Australia written by Tim Causer and published by UCL Press. This book was released on 2022-02-24 with total page 616 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present edition of Panopticon versus New South Wales and other writings on Australia consists of fragmentary comments headed ‘New Wales’, dating from 1791; a compilation of material sent to William Wilberforce in August 1802; three ‘Letters to Lord Pelham’ and ‘A Plea for the Constitution’, written in 1802–3; and ‘Colonization Company Proposal’, written in August 1831, the majority of which is published here for the first time. These writings, with the exception of ‘Colonization Company Proposal’, are intimately linked with Bentham’s panopticon penitentiary scheme, which he regarded as an immeasurably superior alternative to criminal transportation, the prison hulks, and English gaols in terms of its effectiveness in achieving the ends of punishment. He argued, moreover, that there was no adequate legal basis for the authority exercised by the Governor of New South Wales. In contrast to his opposition to New South Wales, Bentham later composed ‘Colonization Company Proposal’ in support of a scheme proposed by the National Colonization Society to establish a colony of free settlers in southern Australia. He advocated the ‘vicinity-maximizing principle’, whereby plots of land would be sold in an orderly fashion radiating from the main settlement, and suggested that, within a few years, the government of the colony should be transformed into a representative democracy.
