Book Synopsis The Urban Caribbean by : Alejandro Portes
Download or read book The Urban Caribbean written by Alejandro Portes and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 1997-06-03 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A study of urbanization in five countries—Costa Rica, Haiti, Guatemala, the Dominican Republic, and Jamaica—during the 1980s and 1990s when the region's economy shifted from one heavily dependent on imports to one directed more to producing exports. The Urban Caribbean studies urbanization in five countries—Costa Rica, Haiti, Guatemala, the Dominican Republic, and Jamaica—during the 1980s and 1990s when the region's economy shifted from one heavily dependent on imports to one directed more to producing exports. This shift caused producers and entrepreneurs to rely more on microenterprises, thus challenging the informal economy networks of the central cities. Sociologist Alejandro Portes and the other contributors use rich, in-depth data to examine both qualitative and quantitative changes in these five countries. Their research method allows them to make generalizations applicable to all five economies while retaining the concreteness of the similarities and differences that make each country unique. "This volume is an incentive to other collaborative efforts to chart the paths taken by the countries of Latin America and the Caribbean as they seek to accommodate to the new global political and economic context . . . .The message of the volume is a convincing one. Because of similarities in the trends affecting countries of the region and policy debates, each country can benefit from the experiences of the others. However, the differences in political structure and in the nature of citizenship mean that social and economic policy debates must take into account the national context."—from the Foreword, by Bryan Roberts, University of Texas-Austin

Such is the case with The Real Jerk. This is new Caribbean cuisine, cooking borne out of tradition, steeped in history, and brought into a new world where styles and tastes fuse to become something entirely different. Alongside the recipes and menu suggestions are stories about the tales behind the traditions, the history of the hearth, and anecdotes about Caribbean living, whether in the islands, or on the mainland. Not to mention black and white photographs and illustrations, and sixteen full-colour images of the best Caribbean cooking to be had this side of the islands. Book excerpt: Retired florist Theo Bloomer would much rather stay at home than go on a disastrous Jamaican vacation in this charming cozy mystery. Every time Dorrie Caldicott gets into trouble, it falls to Theo Bloomer to bail her out. So when Dorrie and her college buddies rent a villa in Jamaica, Uncle Theo is called on to chaperone. An unassuming retired florist, Theo prefers pottering around his greenhouse to traveling the world, but he has a soft spot for his niece—and it may get him killed. At the resort, Theo struggles to make himself at home among Dorrie’s preppy gang. As the students whip themselves into a frenzy of debauchery, Theo just looks the other way. But when fun in the sun gives way to kidnapping, extortion, drug smuggling, and murder, Theo will do anything to get home to his flowers. Fans of Kate Collins’s bestselling Flower Shop Mysteries will find a kindred spirit in Joan Hess’s Theo Bloomer. When this wilting violet is uprooted, the results are nothing short of hilarious. The Deadly Ackee is the 2nd book in the Theo Bloomer Mysteries, but you may enjoy reading the series in any order.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Jamaican Cookbook is a collection of Jamaican recipes, handed down from generation - to - generation with the addition of the newest recipes called “Jerk” Jerk cooking has become a favorite of the Jamaican people and has now spread throughout the Caribbean, the United States, Canada and England. I have exchanged recipes with family members throughout the years. The ingredients and produce used in these recipes are grown in Jamaica and is available at many retail stores. Jamaican women have a flair for cooking hence they handed down the trait to their siblings. I am a product of Jamaica, born in the Parish of Manchester; my family consisted of 12 children. Our parents grew their own vegetables, fruits, spices, and livestock. I hope these recipes will be helpful especially to those Jamaicans living aboard, and will also help to keep the culture alive.
