Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to the History of Japan Europeans and Americans, however, have failed as yet to appreciate the essential worth of Japan's civilisation. Some foreigners, it is true, speak highly of Japanese fine art, praising Japan as a country devoted to art; but the works that they admire are not always essentially character istic of Japan, nor are they representative works of Japanese fine arts. The number of foreigners aware of the existence of an influential literature in Japan is extremely limited. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Short History of Japan The author does not lay claim to originality; he has made use of all materials at hand and has given credit where credit is due. He has, however, applied his own interpretations to the historical and other events recorded and has tried to portray their meaning and their bearing, especially upon the evolution of Japan. There is no attempt at absolute uniformity in the transliteration of Japanese words, nor is there so much variety as to confuse. There is not much practical difference between Tokio and Tokyo; Ieyasu and Iyeyasu. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of Japan Our nearest neighbor across the Pacific has been reckoned among the foremost nations of the earth ever since, in the late war with China, she humiliated that vast but inert empire. Japan will have a voice in the future destiny of Asiatic countries, and in that of the islands of the Pacific. Our schoolbooks on geography and general history touch but lightly upon the Japanese Empire, and it is for the purpose of enabling children to obtain a correct idea of the people, and of the impulses leading to the rapid progress of the past quarter of a century, that "The Story of Japan" has been written. It was deemed essential to explain repeatedly the key to the history of Japan and to the reforms of our time, by noticing the overpowering influence of the samurai of old, who were and still are the makers of the nation. With a very few exceptions, the nobles of Japan have been wholly dependent upon their leading samurai, who, in turn, have been influenced by the ablest of their peers. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of JapanIn the thirteenth century the houses in Kamakura were thrown down, and from fis sures in the neighbouring hills blue flames issued during the succeeding century; the head of the highest mountain in Japan, Fuji-san disappeared to a depth of 100 feet, so that the mountain lost 100 feet of its height. In the eighteenth century a terrible eruption of Fuji-san took place. The moun tain also changed somewhat its conformation, a new peak being produced, which was named Hoyei - san. Even in this century Japan has suffered severely from convulsions of the earth, landslips, and in consequence, disastrous floods.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of the Red Cross Society of Japan During the last fifty years, Japan has made a wonderful improvement in all phases of her civilization, which appears to be a miracle to foreigners, but when they come to examine it closely, they can readily understand that it had a firm and solid foundation. One instance of that kind of improvement is her Red Cross work, which has appealed to the spirit of the Japanese deeply, for they are benevolent and peace loving nation. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Japanese Literature Writers on European literatures are entitled to take for granted, on the part of their readers, a previous acquaintance with the leading facts of the political and religious history of the country with which they are dealing. In the case of Japan, however, it has been thought not superfluous to add a few data of this kind without a knowledge of which it is impossible to under stand the course of the literary development. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the Japanese People From the Earliest Times to the End of the Meiji Era It is trite to remark that if you wish to know really any people, it is neces sary to have a thorough knowledge of their history, including their mythology, legends and folk-lore: customs, habits and traits of character, which to a superficial observer of a different nationality or race may seem odd and strange, sometimes even utterly subversive of ordinary ideas of morality, but which can be explained and will appear quite reasonable when they are traced back to their origin. The sudden rise of the Japanese nation from an insignificant position to a foremost rank in thercomitynof nations has startled the world. Except in the case of very, few who had-studied us intimately, we were a people but little raised above barbarism trying to imitate Western civilisation without any capacity for reallyassimilating-pr adapting it. At first, it was supposed that we had somehow undergone a sudden transformation, but it was gradually perceived that such could not-be. And was not the case; and a crop of books on Japan and the Japanese, deep and superficial, serious and fantastic, interest ing and otherwise, has been put forth for the benefit of those who were curious to know the reason of this strange phenomenon. But among so many books, there has not yet been, so far as I know, a history of Japan, although a study of its history was most essential for the proper understanding of many of the problems relating to the Japanese people, such as the relation of the Imperial dynasty to the people, the family system, the position of Buddhism, the influence of the Chinese philosophy, etc. A history of Japan of moderate size has indeed long been a desideratum; that it was not forthcoming was no doubt due to the want of a proper person to undertake such a work. Now just the right man has been found in the author of the present work, who, an Englishman by birth, is almost Japanese in his understanding of, and sympathy with, the Japanese people. It would indeed be difficult to find any one better fitted for the task by no means an easy one of presenting the general features of Japanese history to Western readers, in a compact and intelligible form, and at the same time in general harmony with the Japanese feeling. The Western public and Japan are alike to be congratulated on the production of the present work. I may say this without any fear of reproach for self-praise, for although my name is men tioned in the title-page, my share is very slight, consisting merely in general advice and in a few suggestions on some special points. And the faint echo which came back from the rocky hill-side bounding the Mission House garden on its eastern side answered, Eileen! Eileen! Over the hill-crest, on the steep sides of which, here and there, beeches, larches, pines, camphor trees, and maples grew, the last rays of the setting sun had streamed in a golden and crimson glory but a very short time before; for dusky twilight follows sunset very rapidly, and the stars in the Japanese sky creep out less stealthily than with us. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Japanese Education Anyone who wishes to understand the source and foundation of the civilization of a nation, can not do better than examine the past history and the present condition of its educational system. Therefore in the international exhibitions held in various countries, a space has generally been alloted for educational exhibits alongside of the varied products of trade and industry. Special attention has been paid to this matter in the preparations for the forthcoming Japan-British Exhibition, where the exhibits relating to education will occupy a comparatively large space; and the pleasant duty of furnishing this section of exhibition was entrusted solely to our Department of Education. The Department accordingly directed several of the schools under its jurisdiction to send in exhibits that would illustrate the special character of the education peculiar to each. The Department furthermore decided to exhibit by itself such books, pictures, etc., as should give a general idea of the past history of education in Japan, as well as of the condition of education as a whole at the present time. This short work, the "History of Japanese Education," is also one of the exhibits of the Department. Masakuni Shiraishi, one of the professors of the Peers' School, was specially appointed to prepare this compilation, but the limited time allowed him did not permit of his going much into details. Notwithstanding this, it is hoped that the clear and systematic presentation of the educational history of Japan to be found in these pages will leave on the mind of the reader at least a fair outline of the subject.
