Book excerpt: While most people today take hygiene and medicine for granted, they both have had their own history. We can gain deep insights into the pre-modern world by studying its health-care system, its approaches to medicine, and concept of hygiene. Already the early Middle Ages witnessed great interest in bathing (hot and cold), swimming, and good personal hygiene. Medical activities grew over time, but even early medieval monks were already great experts in treating the sick. The contributions examine literary, medical, historical texts and images and probe the information we can glean from them. The interdisciplinary approach of this volume makes it possible to view this large field in a complex and diversified manner, taking into account both early medieval and early modern treatises on medicine, water, bathing, and health. Such a cultural-historical perspective creates a most valuable bridge connecting literary and scientific documents under the umbrella of the history of mentality and history of everyday life. The volume does not aim at idealizing the past, but it definitely intends to deconstruct modern myths about the 'dirty' and 'unhealthy' Middle Ages and early modern age.

Book excerpt: Aging is inevitable. But no one said that you couldn't age well and keep your youthful good looks, energy and health. No one wants to get older but unfortunately, until they discover an elixir of youth, it's fairly unavoidable. Many of us make the assumption that getting old automatically has to mean getting covered in wrinkles, losing our ability to walk around and eventually developing incontinence and dementia. As it happens though, none of these things are inevitable and most of them are only partially related to age.And you can see this too just by looking around. While some people seem to be struggling to stand up straight and remember their name at age 65, others are still playing sports and writing books well into their 80s and 90s.Is the difference entirely genetic? Not at all! In fact, there are numerous lifestyle changes that can make all the difference to the way you feel as you age and many of the problems that are associated with old-age can actually be avoided entirely. So yeah, Aging is still inevitable. But the way you age is almost entirely up to you.The difference comes down to your knowledge and your ability to apply that knowledge to make the most of your own body and health. YOU have the choice and the sooner you take action, the more effectively you can stave off the most unappealing aspects of getting older. This isn't just a book for old people. It's for young people too. In fact, it's more aimed at young people because you are the ones who have the time to ensure you get the very most out of your body and mind as you get older. The point again is, you do have control over the way you age and if you take the right precautions then you can stay healthy, mobile and able well into older age. This book is going to act as your road map and your blueprint to help you do exactly that. What You'll LearnYou Can Control How Fast (Or Slowly) You AgeMobility, Energy & NutritionToxins, Cell Damage And Heart Problems, BrainFine Tuning Your Mental Clarity On A Daily BasisCognitive Decline With Old AgeIncreasing Brain Energy And Mood With Nutrition & NootropicsMood And LearningIncreasing Learning, Interest & Memory With The Right LifestyleStaving Off Depression To Prevent Wrinkles & DiseaseHow Stress Ages YouIntroducing: TelomeresHow To Manage StressKeeping Your Body Active And MobilePreventing Your Age From Showing Up On Your FaceProtecting Your Skin With The Right NutrientsThe Best Diet For Looking And Feeling YoungerEat A Lot Or Eat A Little?Skin Care For Anti-AgingCreams And Other ProductsHelping Your Hair Hang Onto Its Youthful AppearanceHow To Avoid Aging HairCombating Grey HairFighting Hair LossKeep Your Hands Looking Younger Over TimeTreating The Embarrassing Issue Of IncontinenceWhat Causes Incontinence In Old AgeSexual Dysfunction & Hormonal ChangesPreventing And Treating Common Ailments Of AgingAnd Much More!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This revision of the Schultz's popular text surveys the field, presenting theory-by-theory coverage of the major theorists who represent the psychoanalytic, neopsychoanalytic, life-span, trait, humanistic, cognitive, behavioral, and social-learning approaches, as well as clinical and experimental work. Where warranted, the authors show how the development of certain theories was influenced by events in a theorist's personal and professional life. This thoroughly revised Seventh Edition now incorporates more examples, tables, and figures to help bring the material to life for students. The new content in this edition reflects the dynamism in the field. The text explores how race, gender, and culture issues figure in the study of personality and in personality assessment. In addition, a final integrative chapter looks at the study of personality theories and suggests conclusions that can be drawn from the many theorists' work.

Book excerpt: Addressing a field that has been dominated by astronomers, physicists, engineers, and computer scientists, the contributors to this collection raise questions that may have been overlooked by physical scientists about the ease of establishing meaningful communication with an extraterrestrial intelligence. These scholars are grappling with some of the enormous challenges that will face humanity if an information-rich signal emanating from another world is detected. By drawing on issues at the core of contemporary archaeology and anthropology, we can be much better prepared for contact with an extraterrestrial civilization, should that day ever come.

Book excerpt: Bridging the fields of conservation, art history, and museum curating, this volume contains the principal papers from an international symposium titled "Historical Painting Techniques, Materials, and Studio Practice" at the University of Leiden in Amsterdam, Netherlands, from June 26 to 29, 1995. The symposium—designed for art historians, conservators, conservation scientists, and museum curators worldwide—was organized by the Department of Art History at the University of Leiden and the Art History Department of the Central Research Laboratory for Objects of Art and Science in Amsterdam. Twenty-five contributors representing museums and conservation institutions throughout the world provide recent research on historical painting techniques, including wall painting and polychrome sculpture. Topics cover the latest art historical research and scientific analyses of original techniques and materials, as well as historical sources, such as medieval treatises and descriptions of painting techniques in historical literature. Chapters include the painting methods of Rembrandt and Vermeer, Dutch 17th-century landscape painting, wall paintings in English churches, Chinese paintings on paper and canvas, and Tibetan thangkas. Color plates and black-and-white photographs illustrate works from the Middle Ages to the 20th century.
