Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The geography of the Canadian economy is undergoing significant change. North-south links encouraged by the North American Free Trade Agreement are loosening east-west ties forged since Confederation. Metropolitian economies have replaced resource-based hinterlands as the centres of dynamic growth, and as the regional economies of traditional geographical units, such as the Praries, have become less homogeneous, policy choices have become more complex. In A Geography of the Canadian Economy, Wallace offers a detailed account of how geography has simultaneously shaped the evolution of Canada's economy and has been shaped by economic forces. It explores these themes along three dimensions. Part I, Context, reviews Canada's external economic relations, globally and particularly within North America. Probing the implications of culture, politics, and regionalism for Canada's economic geography, it assesses the roles played by the natural environment, structural change in industrial systems, and the character of cities in shaping domestic economic opportunities and challenges. Part II, Sectors, presents an overview of Canada's major economic sectors, from the traditional, resource-based ones such as agriculture, forest products, and energy to those built on contemporary expertise in high-technology manufacturing and services. Part III, Regions, explores the distinctive core/periphery economic structure of four major regions: Atlantic Canada, Central Canada, WesternCanada, and Northern and Aboriginal Canada. A final chapter takes stock of the forces of continuity and change that make the geography of the Canadian economy a fascinating 'work in progress'.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The contributors explore four central themes: the locational impacts of the openness of the Canadian economy, Canada's relatively simple economic geography in terms of regional variations in resources and urban development, the problems of keeping pace with rapid advances in technology, and the role of government in maintaining a national market and assisting economic development. They outline the essential elements of Canada's contemporary economic geography, highlight the origins and spatial imprint of change in the Canadian economy, and provide an assessment of Canada's participation in significant international patterns of economic change. Canada and the Global Economy is concerned not only with the economic size and location of consumption and production but also with institutional changes and shifts in employment, the sectoral composition of economic activity, and the organizational structure and locational behaviour of particular industries and firms. Special attention is given to the technological development of both established industries and new service and manufacturing activities. A timely addition to the field, it provides a geographic perspective on significant changes in jobs and types of work that result from the transformation of economic activities. Book excerpt: "Since the early 1980's most peripheral regions of Eastern Canada have seen their population and employment levels stagnate, then decline. However, these trends - ilustrated by the first results of the 2001 census - are characterised by strong discontinuities (mine closures, collapse of fish stock), but also by counter-trends (dynamic entrepreneurship, success in some regions). In this book the authors examine the economy and geographic processes which underlie these trends, and address the following questions: are these processes specific to Eastern Canada, or are they more general? Are all peripheral regions on an equal footing with respect to the trends towards metropolisation and increasing international trade? Are there any policy approaches which may counter-act some of the effects of these structural trends?"--P. 4 of cover.

Book excerpt: This popular textbook offers a thorough and accessible approach to Canadian Studies through comparative analyses of Canada and the United States, their histories, geographies, political systems, economies, and cultures. Students and professors alike acknowledge it as an ideal tool for understanding the close relationship between the two countries, their shared experiences, and their differing views on a range of issues. Fully revised and updated, the second edition of Canadian Studies in the New Millennium includes new chapters on Demography and Immigration Policy, the Environment, and Civil Society and Social Policy, all written by leading scholars and educators in the field. At a time in which there is a growing mutual dependence between the US and Canada for security, trade, and investment, Canadian Studies in the New Millennium will continue to be a valuable resource for students, educators, and practitioners on both sides of the border.

Book excerpt: This text looks at the dual relationship of the Canadian north as both resource frontier and homeland of many Aboriginal groups. Since the last edition of this text, many changes have occurred, raising the possibility that both the frontier and homeland concepts can become a northern reality. These concepts are coherently presented throughout the book and brought to the fore in the concluding chapter.

The aim of this book is to provide an introduction to and interpretation of the development of the Canadian economy since European settlement. The main contrast between the book’s view and previous interpretations of Canada’s economic past is that, instead of emphasizing the continuity of Canadian economic development (with staple exports playing the leading role), the focus is on the transition from the sparsely populated colonial economy of the early nineteenth century to the modern economy ranking among the seven largest market economies whose leaders now meet for economic summits.
