Book excerpt: Fluid-structure interactions (FSI) that involve nonlinear aerodynamic forces are described which affect both aging aircraft, as well as new aircraft. Several cases are presented which contain aerodynamic non linearities that are important in the FSI process and that require different solution approaches from those taken for linear FSI problems. A time-dependent approach is presented which is based on a semi empirical nonlinear aerodynamic model that is fully coupled with the aircraft elastic equations of motion. An early version of this methodology is applied to a wide variety of Limit Cycle Oscillation (LCO) cases for a fighter configuration carrying large underwing stores. The new method is applied to three classes of problems: (1) LCO for bomber and transport type configurations; (2) LCO for a fighter wing; and (3) large amplitude buffet response of a fin subject to server wake turbulence.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the sixth edition. It is suitable for one or more courses at the advanced undergraduate level and graduate level to cover the field of aeroelasticity. It is also of value to the research scholar and engineering practitioner who wish to understand the state of the art in the field. This book covers the basics of aeroelasticity or the dynamics of fluid–structure interaction. While the field began in response to the rapid development of aviation, it has now expanded into many branches of engineering and scientific disciplines and treats physical phenomena from aerospace engineering, bioengineering, civil engineering, and mechanical engineering in addition to drawing the attention of mathematicians and physicists. The basic questions addressed are dynamic stability and response of fluid structural systems as revealed by both linear and nonlinear mathematical models and correlation with experiment. The use of scaled models and full-scale experiments and tests play a key role where theory is not considered sufficiently reliable.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 516 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This plenary paper and the accompanying presentation have highlighted field problems involving fluid-structure interaction over a wide span of Navy operations. Considering the vast size and versatility of the Navy's inventory, the cases presented represent examples of a much larger problem. But even this limited set provides sufficient evidence that fluid-structure interaction does hinder the Navy's ability to accomplish its missions. This survey has also established that there are no accurate and generally applicable design tools for addressing these problems. In the majority of cases the state-of-practice is to either make ad-hoc adjustments and estimates based on historical evidence, or conduct expensive focused tests directed at each specific problem and/or candidate solution. Unfortunately, these approaches do not provide insight into the fundamental problem, and neither can be considered reliable regarding their likelihood of success. So the opportunities for applying computational fluid-structure interaction modeling to Navy problems appear limitless. Scenarios range from the "simple" resonant strumming of underwater and in-air cables, to the "self-contained" flow field and vibration of aircraft/ordnance bodies at various Mach numbers, to violent underwater transient detonations and local hull structural collapse. Generally applicable and computationally tractable design-oriented models for these phenomena are of course still far in the future. But the Navy has taken the first steps in that direction by sponsoring specialized numerical models, validation experiments tailored for specific applications, and conferences such as this one.

Download or read book Dynamics of Very High Dimensional Systems written by E. H. Dowell and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2003 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many books on dynamics start with a discussion of systems with one or two degrees of freedom and then turn to the generalization to the case of many degrees of freedom. For linear systems, the concept of eigenfunctions provides a compact and elegant method for decomposing the dynamics of a high dimensional system into a series of independent single-degree-of-freedom dynamical systems. Yet, when the system has a very high dimension, the determination of the eigenfunctions may be a distinct challenge, and when the dynamical system is nonconservative and/or nonlinear, the whole notion of uncoupled eigenmodes requires nontrivial extensions of classical methods. These issues constitute the subject of this book.

Book Synopsis Rotorcraft Aeromechanics by : Wayne Johnson
Download or read book Rotorcraft Aeromechanics written by Wayne Johnson and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2013-04-29 with total page 949 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A rotorcraft is a class of aircraft that uses large-diameter rotating wings to accomplish efficient vertical take-off and landing. The class encompasses helicopters of numerous configurations (single main rotor and tail rotor, tandem rotors, coaxial rotors), tilting proprotor aircraft, compound helicopters, and many other innovative configuration concepts. Aeromechanics covers much of what the rotorcraft engineer needs: performance, loads, vibration, stability, flight dynamics, and noise. These topics include many of the key performance attributes and the often-encountered problems in rotorcraft designs. This comprehensive book presents, in depth, what engineers need to know about modelling rotorcraft aeromechanics. The focus is on analysis, and calculated results are presented to illustrate analysis characteristics and rotor behaviour. The first third of the book is an introduction to rotorcraft aerodynamics, blade motion, and performance. The remainder of the book covers advanced topics in rotary wing aerodynamics and dynamics.
