Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The realization that available funding for large-scale space programs is rapidly moving beyond the financial reach of any single nation has fostered arguments that innovative international collaboration is becoming a necessity. It may even be that cooperative arrangements have become the only way to initiate & sustain the more ambitious space projects of the future. In addition, enhanced international cooperation may well be the preferred & most effective approach to carrying out some projects already on the space agenda. Starting from an analysis of the difficulties & benefits of space cooperation, this report recommends the changes in international space relations needed to enable the major spacefaring nations, which carry out the bulk of humanity's activities in space, to band together so as to afford the future large scale space programs that are needed to expand their knowledge, to explore new frontiers, & to guarantee their common security. Book Synopsis Space Technology Export Controls and International Cooperation in Outer Space by : Michael Mineiro
Download or read book Space Technology Export Controls and International Cooperation in Outer Space written by Michael Mineiro and published by Springer. This book was released on 2011-11-09 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Export controls definitively impact international cooperation in outer space. Civil and commercial space actors that engage in international endeavors must comply with space technology export controls. In the general discourse, members of the civil and commercial space community have an understanding of their domestic export control regime. However, a careful reading of the literature on space technology export controls reveals that certain questions relevant to international engagements have not been identified or answered. What is the legal-political origin of space technology export controls? How do they relate to the current international legal structure? What steps can be taken to evolve our current unilateral paradigm of space technology within the context of peaceful exploration and use of outer space? In this book, these and other relevant questions on space technology export controls are identified and assessed through an insightful case-study of the U.S. commercial communication export control regime. The findings of this case-study are used in an international legal-political analysis of international space law, public international law, and international cooperation. Breaking new ground in international legal theory, a self-justified security dilemma that is manifest in international law is identified and explained as the origin for the current paradigm of space technology export controls.

Book Synopsis Approaches to Future Space Cooperation and Competition in a Globalizing World by : National Research Council
Download or read book Approaches to Future Space Cooperation and Competition in a Globalizing World written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2009-06-23 with total page 69 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Numerous countries and regions now have very active space programs, and the number is increasing. These maturing capabilities around the world create a plethora of potential partners for cooperative space endeavors, while at the same time heightening competitiveness in the international space arena. This book summarizes a public workshop held in November 2008 for the purpose of reviewing past and present cooperation, coordination, and competition mechanisms for space and Earth science research and space exploration; identifying significant lessons learned; and discussing how those lessons could best be applied in the future, particularly in the areas of cooperation and collaboration. Presentations and initial discussion focused on past and present experiences in international cooperation and competition to identify "lessons learned." Those lessons learned were then used as the starting point for subsequent discussions on the most effective ways for structuring future cooperation or coordination in space and Earth science research and space exploration. The goal of the workshop was not to develop a specific model for future cooperation or coordination, but rather to explore the advantages and disadvantages of various approaches and stimulate further deliberation on this important topic.

Download or read book NASA in the World written by John Krige and published by Palgrave Macmillan. This book was released on 2013-08-21 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The National Aeronautics and Space Administration is typically thought of in national terms - as an American initiative developed specifically to compete with the Soviet Union. Yet, from its inception, NASA was mandated not only to sustain US leadership in space, but also to pursue international collaboration. Since that time, it has participated in over four thousand international projects. Drawing on unprecedented access to agency archives and personnel, this definitive study explores US-Soviet cooperation during the darkest days of the Cold War, relations with Western Europe, India, and Japan, the development of the International Space Station, and many other aspects of scientific and technological collaboration, making it a signal contribution to space studies and international diplomatic history.
