For some, it hits too close to home, creating a feeling of guilt and unworthiness. Others deal with the issue simply by comparing themselves to the worst of the worst--or even a beer-drinking neighbor next door who doesn't pull all of the weeds from his yard. They certainly aren't as bad as this--so they remain with their pride and self-righteousness intact and unthreatened.

That’s why John, a member of the “inner circle” of the disciples, wrote his own account of Jesus’ time on earth. A Forty-Day Study of John’s Gospel answers the question, “Who exactly is Jesus?” and shows how the works and words of Jesus validate his claim that he is God the Son. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Bible is not one book. It is a compilation of sixty-six books, or writings. And even though these were written by some forty different authors over a period of 1500 years, there is an integrated message that runs throughout the Bible. Unfortunately, we often get our exposure to the Bible piecemeal. For the church goer, each week a small sliver of the biblical text is reviewed, without a mechanism that puts all of these pieces into an integrated whole. What we read or hear can seem disjointed. How is the book of Leviticus connected to the book of Hebrews? How is John’s reason for writing his Gospel related to Psalm 2? How do we connect the covenant ceremony of Genesis 15 with the cross—much less understand that ceremony to begin with? Why is the book of Ruth included as part of the Bible? What does it have to do with anything? Or better yet, why do we have the book of Esther—where God is not mentioned at all? What makes each of these important? How are they related, or are they? In short, how is God’s story—God’s revelation—unified? That’s where A Forty-Day Study of the Biblical Story comes in. It looks at how each of the elements of the Bible contribute to an integrated whole. And the lens used to see Scripture in a unified way is Jesus. Everything we look at is done in the context to how it relates to Jesus and how it contributes to the Bible’s unified message. We learn why an obscure Galilean carpenter has become the center of all of history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the introduction to his commentary on Romans, Martin Luther wrote, “This Epistle is really the chief part of the New Testament and the very purest Gospel and is worthy not only that every Christian should know it word for word, by heart, but occupy himself with it every day, as the daily bread of the soul. It can never be read or pondered too much, and the more it is dealt with the more precious it becomes, and the better it tastes” (Martin Luther, Commentary on Romans, xiii). Luther was right. Paul’s letter to the Romans should be the Christian’s daily bread for the soul. This book goes through Romans verse by verse—helping us to understand what Christianity is. The focus is on the difference between religion—humanity reaching for God—and Christianity—God reaching for humanity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Christians generally recognize the need to live a holy, or sanctified, life. But they differ on what sanctification is and how it is achieved. How does one achieve sanctification in this life? How much success in sanctification is possible? Is a crisis experience following one's conversion normal--or necessary? If so, what kind of experience, and how is it verified? Five Views on Sanctification--part of the Counterpoints series--brings together in one easy-to-understand volume five major Protestant views on sanctification: Wesleyan View – represented by Melvin E. Dieter Reformed View – represented by Anthony A. Hoekema Pentecostal View – represented by Stanley M. Horton Keswick View – represented by J. Robertson McQuilkin Augustinian-Dispensationalism View – represented by John F. Walvoord Writing from a solid evangelical stance, each author describes and defends his own understanding of the doctrine sanctification and then responds to the views of the other authors. The Counterpoints series presents a comparison and critique of scholarly views on topics important to Christians that are both fair-minded and respectful of the biblical text. Each volume is a one-stop reference that allows readers to evaluate the different positions on a specific issue and form their own, educated opinion.

Book excerpt: A thorough study of sin, salvation by faith, and the Christian's journey of sanctification. He who wants a correct understanding of holiness must first begin by examining the vast and solemn subject of sin. He must dig down very deep if he wants to build high. Wrong views about holiness are generally traceable to wrong views about human corruption. Practical holiness and entire self-consecration to God are not given adequate attention by modern Christians. The unsaved sometimes rightly complain that Christians are not as kind and unselfish and good-natured as those who make no profession of faith. Far too many Christians make a verbal proclamation of faith, yet remain unchanged in heart and lifestyle. But Scripture makes it clear that holiness, in its place and proportion, is quite as important as justification. Holiness, without which no one shall see the Lord (Hebrews 12:14). It is imperative that Christians are biblically and truly holy. The aim of this book is to instruct you, equip you, and encourage you in the pursuit of holiness.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Can Christians lose their salvation? Are there such things as guardian angels? Can those in heaven see the happenings on earth? How were the Old Testament saints saved since Jesus hadn’t been born yet? Jesus said to the thief on the cross, “Today you shall be with me in paradise,” but he wasn’t raised from the dead until three days later and didn’t ascend into heaven until many days after that—did Jesus lie? Using an in-depth study of the book of Hebrews, Dr. Jory explores answers from the Bible for these and a host of other questions about God and the Christian faith. Biblical commentaries come in all shapes, sizes, and levels of detail and complexity. Dr. Jory’s approach is to ratchet down the complexity. It seeks to present material with these questions always in focus: What would I want to learn from the Bible? How would I want it to be taught to me? The material is presented in short lessons structured to be covered over a forty-day period and is geared for both individual and small-group Bible studies.

Book excerpt: Killing Sin is John Owen's Puritan classic Mortification of Sin updated for today. Owen tackles the age-old challenge for the Christian: how to put to death the power of sin over our lives. This is something that is impossible through man-centered self-help or self-denial. But with God all things are possible. Though we will never be completely free of sin while alive in this world, by putting our faith on Christ with an expectation of His help, the Holy Spirit will bring the His cross into our hearts with all its sin-killing power. Owen tells us why it is imperative for the Christian to be killing sin in his life, what it actually means to kill sin, why only a Christian can do it, why it is only possible through the power of the Holy Spirit, and how we can avail ourselves of the power of the Spirit to kill sin through gospel faith in the death and resurrection of Christ. Owen's original Mortification of Sin was written in 17th century English that is extremely difficult to understand. This Killing Sin translates Owen into contemporary English that is easy to read without dumbing it down so people today can read this very important book on a most critical topic.

It is about bringing the believer into the spiritual experience of the sanctified life. It is an in-depth study of chapters 6 and 7 of the epistle to the Romans. The believer is saved from the consequence of sin and delivered from the power of sin. Therefore, he can experience deliverance from sin and the power of sin on a daily basis. This book answers two fundamental questions and, by extension, all those related to them: How did we become sinners? How can we get out of Adam's nature? How can we become a slave to righteousness? How can we experience walking by the Spirit? It is also in this book that you can discover the spiritual meaning of the deliverance of the law. It is a true and practical guide in sanctification. May the Lord bless you in its reading.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The apostles understood the Gospel as they learned from and personally lived alongside Jesus, and these lessons became the heart of their message to an unsaved world. But what does their perspective mean for modern Christians, and how can we read the Bible through their unique lens today? Following the release of his bestselling book The Gospel According to Jesus, Dr. MacArthur noticed that Christians were looking for practical advice, spiritual counsel, and accessible explanations of the Bible. And, most of all, they wanted help understanding their experiences within Christianity. Dr. MacArthur realized that by examining scripture from the perspective of the apostles themselves, even more Christians could come to know the Gospel as Jesus' earliest followers did. In his characteristic compelling style, Dr. MacArthur examines some of the key passages from the Epistles and Acts that reveal how the apostles first shared the gospel and how they unfolded the truths of salvation to the early church. Dr. MacArthur doesn't shy away from answering some of the difficult questions that he's been asked over the years, including: What is cheap grace? Have some Christians adopted a "no-lordship" theology? What must a person do to be considered righteous by God? How should we call people to faith? Do our works have any effect on our salvation? The Gospel According to the Apostles is a book for every Christian who wants to experience, understand, and fall in love with the same gospel that Jesus preached.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We are to take to heart our personal holiness simply because we have been saved to do so. The process of sanctification is essentially a three fold work: First, sanctification is the cleansing of the soul from sin. Second, sanctification brings us to full stature in Christ. Third, sanctification separates us to the Lord for His purposes. There will be, in practicality, varying degrees of thoroughness relative to the riddance of sin versus growth in Christ-like stature because of the varying degrees of human cooperation with the Holy Spirit or lack thereof. Still, sanctification is the active work of the Spirit though such a calling may appear passive, even absent, due to the lack of knowledge, the slothfulness and the rebellion of the saint. It is these three that best represent much of our present religious atmosphere. Where there is lack of knowledge [about sanctification] there has to be indolence, laziness and rebellion in the form of indifference about personal holiness. And rebellion is a very strong word that should not be used without qualification by the one making the charge or taken lightly by the one addressed. To use the word with its' passive counterpart in this case, indifference, is to bring an indictment against a sizeable portion of the body of Christ. Life is about sin, death then hell. Or life is about God, Christ and responding to the Holy Spirit. To grasp the continual need of sanctification one has to know who the real enemy is in order to receive real relief by sanctification. The real enemy is within. We are self deceived, whose roots of deception are affixed to Satan, Adam and the fall; in that order, eventuating in our fallen nature, in desperate need of God's provisions. And thankfully God has supplied us with every provision through the process of sanctification. Marc presently lives in Orlando Florida where he pastors Blessed Fellowship Orlando, an outreach ministry of Orlando Prayer and Worship Center, Senior Pastor Roy Futch.

Book excerpt: Salvation is of eternal importance yet it is very often misunderstood. In A Fourfold Salvation Author W. Pink addresses the subject of salvation by addressing; Salvation from the Pleasure of Sin, Salvation from the Penalty of Sin, Salvation from the Power of Sin, and Salvation from the Presence of Sin. "Ask the average Christian, Are you saved? and he answers, Yes, I was saved in such and such a year; and that is as far as his thoughts on the subject go. Ask him, To what do you owe your salvation? and "the finished work of Christ" is the sum of his reply. Tell him that each of those answers is seriously defective, and he strongly resents your aspersion." Arthur Walkington Pink was an English Christian evangelist and Biblical scholar known for his staunchly Calvinist and Puritan-like teachings. Though born to Christian parents, prior to conversion he migrated into a Theosophical society (an occult gnostic group popular in England during that time), and quickly rose in prominence within their ranks. His conversion came from his father's patient admonitions from Scripture. It was the verse, Proverbs 14:12, 'there is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death, ' which particularly struck his heart and compelled him to renounce Theosophy and follow Jesus.
