Book excerpt: This book is the most comprehensive empirical study to date of the social and technical aspects of milling during the ancient and medieval periods.Drawing on the latest archaeological evidence and historical studies, the book examines the chronological development and technical details of handmills, beast mills, watermills and windmills from the first millennium BCE to c. 1500. It discusses the many and varied uses to which mills were turned in the civilisations of Rome, China, Islam and Europe, and the many types of mill that existed. The book also includes comparative regional studies of the social and economic significance of milling, and tackles several important historiographical issues, such as whether technological stagnation was a characteristic of late Antiquity, whether there was an industrial revolution" in the European Middle Ages based on waterpower, and how contemporary studies in the social shaping of technology can shed light on the study of pre-modern technology."

Book excerpt: Malta is an archipelago consisting of three islands (Gozo, Comino and Malta itself) located in the central Mediterranean. The strategic location of the islands has meant that they have long enjoyed an importance out of all proportion to their small size. Malta has a history of control by colonial powers and this is reflected in the ethnic background of its population, which comprises Arabs, Normans, Sicilians, English, Spanish and Italians. Occupied at various periods by the Thoenicians, the Greeks, the Carthaginians, the Romans, the Knights of St. John and the French, Malta became a crown colony of Britain in 1814. During the Second World War, the islands played a crucial role for the Allies, and the bravery shown by the people prompted King George VI to award the entire colony the George Cross, Britain's highest honour for valour. The nation achieved full independence in 1964 and became a republic in 1974. This revised bibliography fully updates the first edition, published in 1985, and pays particular attention to Malta's chequered history and strategic position.

Book excerpt: Exploring the conceptual insights provided by the archipelagic 'twist' in the context of tourism principles, policies and practices, this volume draws on an international series of case studies to analyse best practice in branding, marketing and logistics in archipelago tourist destinations. The book asks and seeks to answer such questions as: How to 'sell' a multi-island destination, without risking a message that may be too complex and diffuse for audiences to grab on to? Does one encourage visitors to do 'island hopping'; and, if so, how and with what logistic facilities? How does one ascribe specific island destinations within an overall archipelago brand? Would smaller islands rebel against a composite branding strategy that actually benefits other islands? How does one read or craft transport policies as a function of the 'reterritorialisation' of a multi-island space? This book pioneers the exploration of the archipelago as tourism study focus (and not just locus); a heuristic device for rendering islands as sites of different tourism practices, industries and policies, but also of challenges and possibilities.

Book excerpt: This new, thoroughly updated fourth edition of Bradt's Malta - written by an expert who has been visiting for more than a decade - remains the most comprehensive guide available and has built a reputation for being the essential guide for getting beneath the surface of this island nation and discovering what lies beyond the beaches. Sun, sand and sea there may be, but Malta boasts so much more, and this new edition is packed with historical and archaeological insights, from the Stone Age to the Romans, the Knights Hospitaller to World War II. It also showcases the islands' wildlife and bird-watching opportunities, summer festas, and the less commercialised islands of Gozo and Comino. Malta has been changing at the rate of knots, with Valletta's year as European Capital of Culture accelerating restoration and renovation. Copious openings - of historic sights, key fortresses, a new national gallery and boutique accommodation, particularly in Valletta - are covered, while the culinary scene continues to thrive, with notably greater choice for vegetarians and vegans. Malta has recently become much more socially accepting and is now considered one of the top places for LGBT travellers, while the offering for younger travellers has expanded, too. The Isle of MTV festival is going strong, Annie Mac now has a spring festival in Malta and a host of bars and clubs has sprung up. There is also lots on offer culturally, with festivals, concerts, exhibitions, theatre and opera all contributing to a full programme. Bradt's Malta contains all the information needed for a successful trip. Whatever your budget, it is the ideal guide for everyone from culture aficionados to history and archaeology buffs, foodies, war veterans, families and couples escaping for a romantic break.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a world that is subject to rapid change and cascading crises this book considers the vital importance of local communities to grounded, just and sustainable tourism futures. Embracing local tourism as relational, the contributors examine how tourism can be reoriented to better connect people, place and planet. This local turn starts by centring local communities at the heart of tourism and identifies ways to ensure local community rights and benefits in tourism. Presenting concepts, case studies and practitioner insights, the chapters explore what putting locals first might mean; the constraints of markets and the promise of alternatives; ‘tours’ and ‘turns’ offering possibilities for circles, cycles and connections; approaches for democratising tourism; and building an ethos of relatedness through a relational imperative to face the future together. Book excerpt: This seminal work is the first comprehensive analysis of the media landscape in the Mediterranean island of Malta. It examines the media owned by political parties, trade unions, and the church and how they successfully compete for audiences with the public and private sectors. Carmen Sammut explores institutional efforts to influence the information flow by means of field observations and in-depth interviews in newsrooms. These influences are further examined in an analysis of news content and discourse during the referendum campaign for European Union membership. In a field where literature often overlooks small states, Media and Maltese Society takes advantage of the small context to examine the communication circuit holistically, observing traits that British and American journalism lost with the growth of media capitalism.
