Book excerpt: There is growing recognition that non-formal education (NFE) can play an important role in providing basic education for disadvantaged children and young people. However, development agencies and governments face difficult questions about how to manage the relationship between NFE and the formal education system. This paper offers strategies to support and expand the provision of quality non-formal basic education without compromising its innovation and responsiveness to the needs of different groups. The paper first provides an overview of the history of debates, ideological perspectives and practice in NFE, and outlines key areas of relationships between NFE and the education field as a whole. It draws on examples from Mali, Mexico, Tanzania, India, Namibia, Burkina Faso, Trinidad and Tobago, Somaliland, Brazil, South Africa and the Latin American Fey y Alegria (Faith and Joy) movement.

Chapter 1 describes the Spanish context by looking at qualification as the point of departure; recent changes in the industrial fabric of Spain and the birth of a new social and institutional view of qualification; the reform of vocational education and training; informal learning in Spain; and the status of work experience in the social debate. Chapter 2 describes and analyzes the schemes and initiatives set up to identify, recognize, and establish the role played by nonformal learning in the social process of constructing qualifications. Five areas in which nonformal learning is recognized and assessed are addressed: the role played by nonformal learning in public employment policies; the status given to nonformal learning by the education authorities, provisions for access to the formal education system, and the scope for recognition of nonformal qualifications; the new national system of qualifications and the creation of the national institute for qualifications; certificates of occupational proficiency; and recognition of nonformal learning within the field of collective bargaining. Chapter 3 considers the direction in which recognition of work-based learning will move, including certificates of occupational proficiency and vocational titles. Chapter 4 draws conclusions. Book excerpt: Lifelong Education for Adults: An International Handbook is the first work intended to offer international, encyclopedic coverage of research and studies in the whole field of adult education. With 127 articles written by international specialists, this work will be an invaluable reference source for all those who are engaged in educational activities for adults, either as full-time planners/administrators of educational programmes, or part-time adult educators. There are, for example, articles on education for work and for living, on population education, peace and environmental education, and on learning for personal development and role fulfilment. Conceptual frameworks, practical issues relating to instructional methods, counselling, curriculum and evaluation, and developments in distance learning, group learning, and adult learning are some of the topics discussed. Systems of adult education worldwide, as well as adult education processes and practices, are covered region by region. The problems and initiatives of the developing countries are given attention alongside those of advanced countries. The collection of articles assembled in this Handbook is unique in the range and depth of treatment given to the field of adult education. This volume will thus be of great interest to all engaged in educational activities for adults, in adult schools, community centres, institutions of higher education, as well as educationalists, planners, and decision-makers throughout the world who are involved in adult education at all levels.

Book excerpt: Disaster Management is an intended textbook for students pursuing a first and intermediate course on the subject in any undergraduate programme, especially engineering courses like civil, structural, geotechnical engineering and other specialized courses on the subject. The latest AICTE and the earlier UGC model curriculums have been extensively consulted to design the contents of the book. Knowledge of research methodology is essential for all who either play an active role in conducting research or desire to keep themselves updated in the field of knowledge. Keeping this in mind, this edition has been thoroughly revised. The book contains an up-to-date account of the methods and techniques suited to the field of education and other allied disciplines and thus provides an understanding of significant research problems that need to be tackled. The book elaborates the quantitative and qualitative data analysis techniques; use of descriptive and inferential statistics; reporting of the results of research along with the characteristics and uses of historical, descriptive, ethnographic and experimental methods. Case studies form an important part of the text. It also provides priority areas of educational research in India in the context of National Education Policy (1986) and its Programme of Action (1992), UGC, DEC-IGNOU (2006), NCERT (2005), and UNESCO initiatives and policies as well as the Surveys of Research in Education (1997 and 2006).Designed and written mainly for the students of M.A. (Education, Psychology and Sociology), M.Ed. and M.Phil. (Education, Psychology and Sociology), the book will be of immense value to the Ph.D. students and other researchers of Social Sciences, Biological Sciences, Management, Legal Studies, Humanities and Languages.
