Book excerpt: A Faithful Narrative of the Surprising Work of God is Jonathan Edwards' account of the revival that broke out in Northampton, Massachusetts and other nearby communities which was the start of what later became known as The Great Awakening (1734-43), also called the First Great Awakening. There is much we can learn from Edwards concerning the nature of genuine conversion and how God's Spirit works in awakening and converting sinners. A Faithful Narrative is reproduced here in the hopes that many people will benefit from the wisdom learned by Edwards, called the greatest evangelist ever to grace the American continent.Different editions of this book had different chapter divisions, but the same information. A few old words we no longer use have been replaced with their modern equivalent, the spelling of a few words have been updated such as to-day to today. And a few very long paragraphs have been made shorter by adding an indentation, otherwise the words and punctuation are the same as original. The final chapter is an account of his early religious experiences and conversion that was found among his papers at his death, and is supposed to have been written at Northampton, when he was about forty years of age. It is not found in all editions of this book, so it is great to have it in this 2019 edition.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Edwards on Revivals, Containing a Faithful Narrative of the Surprising Work of God in the Conversion of Many Hundred Souls in Northampton, Massachusetts, A. D. 1735: Also, Thoughts on the Revival of Religion in New England, 1742, and the Way in Which It Ought to Be Acknowledged and Promoted There has been a great and just complaint for many years among the ministers and churches in Old England, and in New, (except about the time of the late earthquake there, ) that the work of conversion goes on very slowly, that the Spirit of God in his saving influences is much withdrawn from the ministrations of his word, and there are few that receive the report of the gospel, with any eminent success upon their hearts. But as the gospel is the same divine instrument of grace still, as ever it was in the days of the apostles, so our ascended Savior now and then takes a special occasion to manifest the divinity of this gospel by a plentiful efl'usion of his Spirit where it is preached then sinners are turned into saints in numbers, and there is a new face of things spread over a town or country The wilderness and the solitary places are glad, the desert rejoices and blossoms as' the rose and surely concerningthis instance we may add, that they have seen the glory of the Lord there, and the excellency of our God they have seen the outgoings of God 'our King in his sanctuary. Certainly it becomes us, who profess the religion of Christ, to take notice of such astonishing exercises of his power and mercy, and give him the glory which is due, when he begins to accomplish any of his promises concerning the latter days; and it gives us further encon ragement to pray, and wait, and hape for the like display of his power in the midst of us The hand of God 19 not shortened, thfi it can not save, but we have reason to fear that our iniquities, our coldness in religion, and the general carnality bf our spirits, have raised a wall of separation between God and us: and we may add, the pride and perverse humor of infidelity, degeneracy, and apostasy from the Chris tian faith, which have of late years broken out amongst us, seem to have provoked the Spirit of Christ to absent himself much from our nation. Return, 0 Lord, and visit thy churches, and revive thine own work in the midst of us. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: God Glorified in the Work of Redemption, by the Greatness of Man's Dependence upon Him in the Whole of It, was preached on the Publick Lecture in Boston, July 8, 1731. (First preached in the fall of 1730 in Northampton.) This Thursday lecture was traditionally held at the First Church of Boston. Jonathan Edwards was 28, and it was to become his first printed sermon. People are dependent on God because of their insufficiency, helplessness, and sinfulness and this sermon explains how God is glorified by this condition. This edition includes the introductory advertisement by Rev. Thomas Prince (Old South Church) and Rev. William Cooper (Brattle Street Church).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jonathan Edwards, widely considered America’s most important Christian thinker, was first and foremost a preacher and pastor who guided souls and interpreted religious experiences. His primary tool in achieving these goals was the sermon, out of which grew many of his famous treatises. This selection of Edwards’ sermons recognizes their crucial role in his life and art. The fifteen sermons, four of which have never been published before, reflect a life dedicated to experiencing and understanding spiritual truth. Chosen to represent a typical cycle of Edwards’ preaching, the sermons address a wide range of occasions, situations, and states, corporate as well as personal. The book also contains an introduction that discusses Edwards’ contribution to the sermon as a literary form, places his sermons within their social and cultural contexts, and considers his theological aims as a way of familiarizing the reader with the "order of salvation" as Edwards conceived of it. Together, the sermons and the editors’ introduction offer a rounded picture of Edwards the preacher, the sermon writer, and the pastoral theologian.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Edwards on Revivals Containing a Faithful Narrative: Surprising Work of God in the Conversion of Many Hundred Souls in Northampton, Massachusetts, A. D. 1735 We find, then, in our nature, and its inevitable' circumstances, principles of contradiction; an intel lectual mutiny, a war of reason, feeling, and fact; a state of things, within every man's competency to' detect, which loudly cries of disorder and ruin. NO wonder is it, that mankind ransack heaven and earth' to find religion, while they reject that which alone is religion; no wonder that, wanting all the time a god to sooth and comfort them, they have not liked to retain the true God in their knowledge no wonder that they hold the truth In unright eousness or that they cling to a form Of godli ness, while they deny its power. Book excerpt: A collection of writings from and about New England’s Great Awakening—a spiritual movement that gave rise to American evangelicalism—from the theologian and philosopher who first reported it to the masses Jonathan Edwards (1703–1758) is recognized today as a great theologian and philosopher. In his own day Edwards was best known as a leader of what is now known as the Great Awakening: a series of small-town revivals that mushroomed into a movement credited with giving birth to American evangelicalism and laying the groundwork for the American Revolution. In authoritative texts drawn from first editions and manuscript sources, this volume brings together all of Edwards’s essential writings from and about the revivals, including the famous sermon “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God” and his vivid Faithful Narrative of the Surprising Work of God in the Conversion of Many Hundreds of Souls, the work that first publicized the awakenings. Characterized by precise logic and powerful imagery, his writing continues to inspire students and spiritual seekers alike. LIBRARY OF AMERICA is an independent nonprofit cultural organization founded in 1979 to preserve our nation’s literary heritage by publishing, and keeping permanently in print, America’s best and most significant writing. The Library of America series includes more than 300 volumes to date, authoritative editions that average 1,000 pages in length, feature cloth covers, sewn bindings, and ribbon markers, and are printed on premium acid-free paper that will last for centuries.

Book excerpt: The 18th century was a wealth of knowledge, exploration and rapidly growing technology and expanding record-keeping made possible by advances in the printing press. In its determination to preserve the century of revolution, Gale initiated a revolution of its own: digitization of epic proportions to preserve these invaluable works in the largest archive of its kind. Now for the first time these high-quality digital copies of original 18th century manuscripts are available in print, making them highly accessible to libraries, undergraduate students, and independent scholars. The Age of Enlightenment profoundly enriched religious and philosophical understanding and continues to influence present-day thinking. Works collected here include masterpieces by David Hume, Immanuel Kant, and Jean-Jacques Rousseau, as well as religious sermons and moral debates on the issues of the day, such as the slave trade. The Age of Reason saw conflict between Protestantism and Catholicism transformed into one between faith and logic -- a debate that continues in the twenty-first century. ++++ The below data was compiled from various identification fields in the bibliographic record of this title.
