Book excerpt: This pathbreaking interpretation of the slaveholding South begins with the insight that slavery and freedom were not mutually exclusive but were intertwined in every dimension of life in the South. James Oakes traces the implications of this insight for relations between masters and slaves, slaveholders and non-slaveholders, and for the rise of a racist ideology.

Book excerpt: Wild Democracy calls for a more anarchic, more courageous democracy. This is an ethic for people who know the rights they hold, and who struggle to rule themselves. This is an ethic for unfinished revolutions; an ethic for those who will not be mastered. This is an ethic for those who hold fast to the rights they have by nature. This is an ethic that requires courage. Democracy is always a risky business; full of promise and danger. The promise is the freedom to rule ourselves. The danger is fear: fear of the unknown, fear of the unruly, fear of one another, fear of anarchy. Fear leads to authoritarianism. The fearful look for a strong hand, a powerful leader, a protector, a gun. Anarchy leads to courage, to self-reliance, self-discipline, self-rule, and solidarity. Anarchy is the nursery of democracy. It is not anarchy we have to fear, it is authoritarianism. We have been taught to see the people as a problem to be managed. Anne Norton sees them as a source of strength. Anarchic democracy grows wild: springing from the everyday actions of ordinary human beings. Liberalism and conservatism alike have turned away from the democratic, to institutions, rules, and regulations. Anne Norton turns to anarchic people who practice democratic ethics.

I was rejected, betrayed, abused, and left for dead. Three days from nowhere, I thought my life was over, but the Lord rescued me. I ran twenty-five hundred miles away from one nightmare and wound up in another far worse. The man followed me for years. Despite my attempts to rid myself of this fearful specter, he was always there. Deep in my fear, God saved me once again. Up on that high, rigid Verdes Cliff with the raging water beneath me, death was all around. On the verge of insanity, the Lord stepped in and rescued me. He gave me back my life. This is my story of how, despite fearful circumstances, God is always there. No matter where you are, no matter what midnight hour you face, remember you are more than a conqueror in Christ Jesus.

Book excerpt: Step back in time and meet everyday people from another era: This edition brings to you the complete collection of hundreds of life stories, incredible vivid testimonies of former slaves from 17 U.S. southern states, including photos of the people being interviewed and their extraordinary narratives. After the end of Civil War in 1865, more than four million slaves were set free. There were several efforts to record the remembrances of the former slaves. The Federal Writers' Project was one such project by the United States federal government to support writers during the Great Depression by asking them to interview and record the myriad stories and experiences of slavery of former slaves. The resulting collection preserved hundreds of life stories from 17 U.S. states that would otherwise have been lost in din of modernity and America's eagerness to deliberately forget the blot on its recent past. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is estimated that 9.7 percent of all Americans suffer from some type of mood disorder. And this estimate does not include people who have yet been diagnosed. This book is about my life experience growing up in a family where my grandmother was bipolar, my brother became schizophrenic due to a drug overdose, my mother became bipolar due to a mental breakdown, and how I became bipolar due to a mental breakdown at age twenty-three while working in corporate America and being faced with a lot of responsibility. The book tells how my ungrateful experience working for corporate America drove me to move to Hawaii in pursuit of becoming an astronaut, and how after attending college in Hawaii and becoming grounded, my goal of becoming an astronaut changed. It talks how I was interviewed by Department of Defense contractors and a headhunter for Jet Propulsion Lab and made the CIA on-call list and FBI special agent recruiting list after graduating college, all while being bipolar. It also talks about my journey as a martial artist and how I tried to open up a school while receiving social security disability for my mental illness. And it also talks of the many times I almost became homeless and the time I was arrested and tortured for being mistaken as homeless as a result of being bipolar. Like most people who suffer from bipolar mental illness, my book has the ups and downs of my life and includes the good and the bad. But most importantly, my book shed light on how I was able to take control of my mental illness through medicine and management techniques that can benefit people who have a mental illness, treat people with mental illness, or know someone with a mental illness. This book is a guide for people who want to take control of their mood disorder and is based on my true story of me having a mental illness and finding ways to manage my condition, which I now share with you.
