Humez provides excellent and clear introductions, emphasizing the ambiguous role of women."Â -- Library Journal "This very fine book is a valuable contribution to Shaker studies, religious studies, and women's studies." -- Journal of American History "The editor provides insightful commentary, but the power is in the straightforward and powerful words of the women who founded and participated in this most religious American group."Â -- The Bloomsbury Review "Humez's work is a model of revisionist scholarship, critically objective and editorially balanced, and provides a solid introduction to the early history of the Shakers." -- Utopian Studies "Israel, you have begun to bear for other souls, and you must never give out, till the last soul is gathered in. When you get home, tell your father and stepmother that your mother is risen from the dead." -- from the book A fascinating introduction to the world of the early Shakers, this anthology documents the contributions to Shaker religion made by women during its first seventy years. It gives a more accurate vision of Shakerism and highlights the ways in which gender can play an important role in the creation of a new religious institution.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Experiments in communism sprang up all over the United States in the latter half of the 19th century, idealistic attempts at utopian living amidst the clanging capitalism of the expanding nation. They were already on their way out when American journalist CHARLES NORDHOFF (1830-1901) took his grand tour of these communities, and his unsentimental, unbiased examination of their origins, religious beliefs, daily life, social habits, and other details-based on his own firsthand observation and first published in 1875-remains the best accounts we have of: [ the Amana Society [ the Harmonists at Economy [ the Separatists of Zoar [ the Shakers [ the Oneida and Wallingford Perfectionists [ the Aurora and Bethel Communes [ the Icarians [ the Bishop Hill Colony [ the Cedar Vale Commune [ the Social Freedom Community Complete with a look at three colonies not communistic in nature-Anaheim, California; Vineland, New Jersey; and Silkville Prairie Home, Kansas-and statistics on commune life as it existed in the day, this is an invaluable resource for students of socialism and communism, of American social experiments, and of the little-explored corners of American history in general.

Book Synopsis O Sisters Ain't You Happy? by : Suzanne R. Thurman
Download or read book O Sisters Ain't You Happy? written by Suzanne R. Thurman and published by Syracuse University Press. This book was released on 2001-12-01 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Compelling, in-depth analysis of Shaker villages that sheds light on how communal attitudes helped to liberate Shaker women. Drawing on archival material from Shaker members, observers, and apostates, noted historian Suzanne R. Thurman offers a scholarly yet eminently readable study of life in two of the oldest, most prominent American Shaker villages: the Harvard and Shirley communities of Massachusetts. Even as she delves into the complex fabric of Shaker social life, Thurman challenges traditional perceptions of gender roles within the community. Shaker spiritual and social ethics, she points out, strongly favored women. Celibacy and an androgynous theology, for instance, allowed androgynous social roles to evolve. Another key factor was the lively arena of nineteenth-century reformers and intellectuals in nearby Boston. With admirable detail, Thurman documents the relationship that grew between these forward thinkers and the Believers. Their influence, she argues, enlightened Shaker consciousness and empowered their women of Harvard and Shirley with opportunities denied them in the world at large. The author also explores links, particularly economic, between Shakers and the greater American society. Treating Harvard and Shirley Believers as an idiosyncratic part of the nation rather than a fringe group, Thurman sheds new light on their constant struggle to be in the world but not of it.
